Dolmen discovered NORTH KOREA SPEAK: SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE KOREAN CENTRAL NEWS AGENCY IN PYONG YANG
Personally I found this story profoundly disappointing. It so nearly managed to become a straightforward news story - a rare gem in the North Korean media. But at the last hurdle, a line of political propaganda slipped in insidiously, when the writer was probably already relaxing from a job well done! (Editor) Pyongyang, September 3 (KCNA) Historical relics have been unearthed in Korea. Recently, a research team of the Korean Central History Museum discovered 25 dolmens in Osan-ri, Sunan district, Pyongyang. The dolmen tombs are on ridges of Chongryong mountain range. A survey of tombs' structure and relics discovered there says that they are 3,500 years old.
Each of those tombs of Mukpang-ri type was built by piling up small stone plates to make a burial chamber and its roof was covered with one big flat stone. The burial chamber remains in its original state. This shows that people at that time had advanced stone-processing and stone-building knowhow. The floor of the chamber is rectangular. The size of the chamber of a tomb is 180 centimetres in length, 140 cm in width and 80 cm in depth. The flat stone is 360 cm long, 280 cm wide and 67 cm thick.

Koreans, like many other Asian peoples, are descendants of the Mongolian Tungus stock. They differ from the neighboring Japanese and Chinese, however, in that Koreans are a homogeneous ethnic group with their own language, culture, and customs.
Over the last several decades, Korea has transformed herself from an agrarian society to an industrial leader on the world economic scene. Progress is being made in education, science and technology and social welfare.

North Korea Biological Profile
Introduction An examination of open-source data finds varying assessments concerning North Korea and its purported capabilities in biological weaponry. These estimates can range from North Korea having a rudimentary biological warfare (BW) program, to actual possession of biological weapons already deployed. One recent South Korean Ministry of Defense analysis released to the public have concluded that, without positing which ones, North Korea has weaponized 1-2 BW agents. General Thomas A. Schwartz, Commander of US Forces in Korea (USFK), stated in testimony before the US Senate in March 2002 that "...North Korea has the capability to develop, produce and weaponize biological warfare agents." A day later (6 May 2002) John R. Bolton, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security at the US State Department, described North Korea’s biological weapons capabilities the following way:

    Key Aspects of Sunshine Policy
    • Promotion of confidence, peace, and cooperation between the two Koreas through direct social and economic interaction.
    • Resolution of political and military tensions through multilateral frameworks including the four-party talks and the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO).
    • Belief that containment of North Korea has had negative consequences. Economic failure and political isolation have led North Korea to use its nuclear and ballistic missile programs as bargaining chips to guarantee regime survival. Containment also produced aggressive and uncooperative behavior. Emphasizes engagement and the normalization of political and economic ties between North Korea and the United States and Japan.(4)
    Policy Guidelines
To achieve the goals listed above, the Kim Dae-jung administration has sought to formulate the sunshine policy by adopting seven policy guidelines. These include:
    • Revival of the stalled inter-Korean dialogue through the exchange of high-level envoys and implementation of the 1991 Basic Agreement.

"I do my work in tears," stated Stephen Linton, director of the Eugene Bell Centennial Foundation (EBCF), and also a Research Fellow at Columbia University’s Center for Korean Resarch. As the head of EBCF, Linton is driven by a sense of urgency to help provide humanitarian aid to relieve the current food shortage crisis in North Korea. According to officials of the United Nations (UN) World Food Programme (WFP), about 2.1 million children and about 500,000 pregnant and nursing mothers are at greatest risk. They face possible starvation in North Korea's bitterly cold winter.
. . .2.1 million children and 500,000 pregnant and nursing mothers are at greatest risk. They face possible starvation in North Korea's bitterly cold winter.
A combination of factors have contributed to North Korea's 1.7 million ton shortfall in last year's rice production. Torrential rain late last summer caused floods which devastated the fall rice harvest by about a third. As a result, Communist North Korea issued an unprecedented plea for humanitarian aid from the West. The natural disaster was "the straw that broke the camel's back" according to Trevor Page, director of the WFP's office in North Korea's capital, Pyongyang. Problems resulting from North Korea's state-dominated agriculture, a stagnating economy, a demoralized work force, lack of foreign exchange and investment, chronic fuel shortages, crumbling infrastructure, and the upkeep of the world’s fifth largest army have all contributed to its current humanitarian and economic crisis.

    • Read or summarize the Current Events article to students.
    • Ask students to work in groups to brainstorm expenses for their school (e.g., books, computers, teacher salaries, musical instruments, heat, light bulbs). Tell students that one sample school district divided their expenses into the following main categories: Instruction, Transportation, Athletics and Student Activities, Custodians and Building Operations, and Administration. Put these headings on the board, and have students suggest which topics some of their expenses should go under. List their expenses and help them add others. Explain that finding places to cut in school budgets is usually very difficult. Have each group choose one expense that they definitely wouldn't want to cut in their school's budget. Ask them to write down the expense as well as why they think it would be important not to cut it. As an example, you could mention that they may not want to cut new computers out of the budget because training on the latest equipment will help students learn the computer skills they need to find good jobs. Have each group take turns to orally describe and defend their choices for expenses not cut.
