Background Following World War II, Korea was split with the northern half coming under Communist domination and the southern portion becoming Western oriented. KIM Chong-il has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feed its population, while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and massive conventional armed forces are of major concern to the international community.

Korea is situated on a peninsula, which spans 1,100 kilometers north to south and lies between the East Sea and the Yellow Sea. The Korean Peninsula lies on the northeastern section of the Asian continent, in the northwestern corner of the Pacific Ocean. The peninsula shares its northern border with China and Russia. To the east lies the East Sea, and beyond neighboring Japan. In addition to the mainland peninsula, Korea also includes some 3,000 islands. Korea encompasses a total of 222,154 square kilometers - approximately the same size as Britain or Romania. Excluding reclaimed land areas, almost 45 percent of the countrysome 99,000 square kilometersis considered arable. Mountainous terrain accounts for some two-thirds of the nation's territory, giving the landscape an appearance similar to Portugal or Hungary. The Taebaeksan range runs the full length of the east coast, where the lashing waves of the East Sea have carved out sheer cliffs and rocky islets. The western and southern slopes are rather gentle, with wide plains and offshore islands honeycombed with inlets. The peninsula features many scenic mountains and rivers so that Koreans have often likened their country to beautifully embroidered brocade. The highest peak is Mt. Baekdusan in North Korea, which rises 2,744 meters above sea level along the northern border facing China. Mt. Baekdusan is an extinct volcano where a large volcanic lake, named Cheonji, has been formed. The mountain is regarded as an especially important symbol of the Korean spirit and is mentioned in Korea's national anthem.

    Korean Geography
The Korean peninsula lies directly between China and Japan, extending in a southeasterly direction from the continent. A relatively small land, Korea is roughly 1,000 kilometers in length and only 216 kilometers wide at its narrowest point ( map links The peninsula is separated from China in the northwest by the Yalu River, from the Soviet Union in the northeast by the Tuman River, and from Japan by the East Sea. China's Shantung peninsula lies just 190 kilometers to the west across the Yellow Sea. The Korean peninsula is in fact a "chain of hills" stretching from the mainland. Mountains cover 70% of Korea's land area, making it one of the most mountainous regions in the world and a great place for hikers and nature lovers. On the peninsula, coexisting uneasily side by side, separated only by the De-militarized Zone roughly approximating the 38th parallel, lie the Republic of Korea in the South and North Korea. The Republic of Korea is somewhat smaller in land area, 99,091 square kilometers compared to 122,370 in the North, but its population of just over 45 million is about twice as large as the North's. Top of Page Administratively, South Korea consists of nine provinces, one special city, Seoul (

    http://www.indiana.edu/~easc/pages/easc/curriculum/eastasia/1995/general/korea/k
    LESSON 1. LOCATIONAL GEOGRAPHY
    OBJECTIVE:
Given a map of the world and a map of Korea, the student will: a) locate Korea on a world map; and b) locate and label the major geographic features of Korea. MATERIALS:
A printed map of the world; a printed map of Korea, with the following geographic features marked, but not labeled: Korean Strait; Cheju Strait; Sea of Japan; Yalu River; Sobaek Mountains; Cheju Island; 38th Parallel; Demilitarized Zone (DMZ); Hallasan; Seoul; P'yongyang; Inchon; Panmunjon; Kyongju; Pusan. Also, atlases, encyclopedias, and any other reference books. METHOD:
There are a variety of ways to do this assignment: students can work individually, or together in small groups. Individual students can locate one or two features each, then record them on a transparency from which everyone can copy. This can be a homework assignment, or done in class.
Note: Please make certain that whatever references you have actually show all the above features. I recommend the materials put out by the Korea National Tourist Corp., Chicago, Illinois; the Culturgrams on North and South Korea published by the David Kennedy Center at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah; and Korea , a Teacher's Guide

    http://www.ktnet.co.kr/enghome/culture/korea.html
Location Area Population Flag ... Language The Korean Peninsula extends southward from the northeastern part of the Asian continent between latitudes from 33 to 43 degrees North, and longitudes from 124 to 131 degrees East. The standard meridian of the peninsula is 135 degrees, 9 hours ahead of GMT. The Amnok and Tuman Rivers border both China and Russia to the north, and Japan lies just across the East Sea. Since 1945, as a result of the Cold War, the peninsula has been divided into two parts: the democratic Republic of Korea, or South Korea, and communist Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea. The total area of the peninsula is 222,154 square kilometers, similar in size to that of Britain, New Zealand, or Romania. South Korea occupies 99,392 square kilometers or 45 percent of the total land mass, and North Korea the remaining 122,762 square kilometers. Seventy percent of the land is covered with mountains, particularly to the north and east. Along the southern and western coasts, the mountains descend gradually into broad coastal plains. Most of the rivers have their tributaries in the northern and eastern sides, and flow into the West and South Seas. Concentrated for the most part on the southern coast are more than 3,000 islands of various sizes that provide a scenery that is unparalleled by any other place in the world.
