Korea is situated on a peninsula between the East Sea and the Yellow Sea spanning 1,100 kilometers north to south. The Korean Peninsula lies on the northeastern section of the Asian continent, in the northwestern corner of the Pacific Ocean. The peninsula shares its northern border with China and Russia. To the east lies the East Sea, and beyond neighboring Japan. To the west is the Yellow Sea. In addition to the mainland peninsula, Korea also includes some 3,000 islands.
Korea encompasses a total of 222,154 square kilometers - approximately the same size as Britain or Romania. Excluding reclaimed land areas, almost 45 percent of the country - some 99,000 square kilometers - is considered arable. Mountainous terrain accounts for some two-thirds of the nation's territory, giving the landscape an appearance similar to Portugal or Hungary.
The Taebaeksan Range runs the full length of the east coast, where the lashing waves of the East Sea have carved out sheer cliffs and rocky islets. The western and southern slopes are rather gentle, with wide plains and offshore islands honeycombed with inlets.

  • Read or summarize the Current Events article to students.
  • Ask students to work in groups to brainstorm expenses for their school (e.g., books, computers, teacher salaries, musical instruments, heat, light bulbs). Tell students that one sample school district divided their expenses into the following main categories: Instruction, Transportation, Athletics and Student Activities, Custodians and Building Operations, and Administration. Put these headings on the board, and have students suggest which topics some of their expenses should go under. List their expenses and help them add others. Explain that finding places to cut in school budgets is usually very difficult. Have each group choose one expense that they definitely wouldn't want to cut in their school's budget. Ask them to write down the expense as well as why they think it would be important not to cut it. As an example, you could mention that they may not want to cut new computers out of the budget because training on the latest equipment will help students learn the computer skills they need to find good jobs. Have each group take turns to orally describe and defend their choices for expenses not cut.

The Korean peninsula was an inhospitable site for a war. A 525-mile peninsula extending southward from Manchuria and Siberia to within about 120 miles of southern Japan, it varies in width from 125 to 200 miles, so that its shape resembles that of Florida while its area (85,000 square miles) approximates that of Minnesota. The east coast of Korea faces the Sea of Japan; the west coast fronts on the Yellow Sea; to the south is the Korea Strait. Most of the northern boundary is traced by the winding Yalu and Tumen rivers. Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea, lies 340 miles from Kyushu, 730 miles from Tokyo and 800 miles from Okinawa. In general, Korea's main agricultural areas are south of the 38th parallel; the north had been heavily industrialized by the Japanese, so that the North Korean regime fell heir to a light metal and chemical complex of value to its war effort. Hydroelectric resources were an important part of the industrial establishment, with power lines radiating from dams and power plants along the Yalu and its tributaries.** Korea's ports had been developed to complement the industrial growth, and the best of them was the well-protected Pusan harbor which had berths for about 25 ocean-going vessels and 15 smaller type coastal ships. Inchon, the port for Seoul, has a 27-foot

The Koreas
PYONGYANG WATCH
Go north, go west: growth poles in a reunified Korea

By Aidan Foster-Carter
Economic geography sounds dry and abstract. In fact, few social sciences are as rich and concrete. In plain English, we're talking what grows and what goes where.
Nature is only half the story, affecting two aspects above all. Climate sets limits to agriculture: thus South Korea grows rice, while the colder, hillier North harvests mainly maize. Mines, obviously, go where the minerals are; and hydroelectric power too depends on the terrain. In Korea, as it happens, both of those are found mainly in the North.
The rest is at least partly politics, or the congealed politics which is history. In an ideal world, plants of the industrial variety would be rationally and evenly sited. In practice, the power of empire or nation is just as important. Not long ago the city where I live, Bradford, was the center of the global wool trade. Half a world away, New Zealand sheep farmers tuned crackly radios to the daily price on the Bradford wool exchange: their livelihood hinged on it. That has long gone, and Bradford's fortunes with it. But globalization famously creates ever more such interdependencies - usually with winners and losers.
And Korea? In olden days it was largely self-reliant, as were most places; although already a thousand years ago Korean traders were venturing over the Yellow Sea to China. But modern Korea's economic geography was set from its east, not west. As Japan's influence grew even before formal annexation in 1910, the part of Korea nearest to Japan became a Japanese beachhead. So Pusan in the southeast rose from nothing to become today South Korea's second city and one of the world's largest container ports.

The peninsula was partitioned between the occupying forces of the United States in the south and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in the north after World War II. The state of South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea, was established in 1948.
South Korea is bounded on the north by North Korea, on the southeast and south by the Korea Strait (which separates it from Japan), and on the west by the Yellow Sea. The Land of the Morning Calm has a total area of about 98,480 square kilometers (38,023 square miles), including the islands in the south and west. The largest of these is Cheju, with an area of 1,829 square kilometers (706 square miles).

Baekdu is an extinct volcano where a large volcanic lake, named Cheonji, has been formed. North Korea: will US agression be repulsed?
On March 19, the RF Federation Council received a North Korean parliamentary delegation with chairman of the Supreme People’s Assembly of North Korea Choe Tae-bok at its head. Today’s international situation regarding North Korea, mentioned as a part of “the axis of evil” by George W.Bush, became the key topic of the discussion between the Russian and Korean parliamentarians.
North Korea is in need of reliable allies now, despite Pyongyang’s statements about its readiness “to repulse the aggression of the USA” (Choe Tae-bok said in an interview with Izvestia that “the Korean people will persistently defend their dignity and the USA will be repulsed”). China and Russia fir the role of Korea’s allies quite well. Both countries are more concerned about the human rights situation in Korea than the USA and Western Europe. On the other hand, it is of no use to demand the observation of human rights from Pyongyang, especially under the present-day condition, when Korea is under a state of siege.
Concerning the unity of the Korean people, the other day, a group of Koreans entered the Spanish Embassy in China and asked for political asylum. As a result, the defectors were sent to South Korea, and China warned South Korea that the relationship between the two countries will be spoiled if more people penetrate the country from the North. Nevertheless, as long as the life of ordinary people is ignored in North Korea, the people will try to escape, and life promises to be even worse after the statements of the US president. The scarce resources of the country will be spent on the the strengthening of North Korea's defenses first of all.
