    The Regional Geography of Canada
    by Robert M. Bone
While physical and historical geography have traditionally played a central role in the study of Canadian geography, The Regional Geography of Canada gives more weight to the coverage of contemporary economic and social factors which have transformed the spatial fabric of Canada's landscape. One province and two territories incurred population declines of 5% or more between 1996 and 2001. They were Newfoundland and Labrador, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
Newfoundland and Labrador's population experienced its second consecutive census-to-census decline. The census counted 512,930 people in the province, down 7% from the previous census. This was more than twice the 2.9% rate of decline between 1991 and 1996. Newfoundland and Labrador had the strongest net outflow of interprovincial migrants of any province. It also had the nation's lowest fertility rate.
The census counted 28,674 people in the Yukon, down 6.8%, and 37,360 in the Northwest Territories, down 5.8%. Demographic change in the territories is quite volatile because of the small size of their population. Between 1991 and 1996, growth rates in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories were much higher than the Canadian average. However, leading up to the 2001 Census, high net outflows of migration to the rest of Canada contributed to the declines in population.

I am interested in the relationship between climatic variations and vegetation response at different spatial and temporal scales. I use fossil pollen, fossil stomates, plant macrofossils, tree-rings, geochemistry and historical records to reconstruct past climate variation and then examine vegetation changes caused by these variations. My lab facilities are relatively extensive and consist of four rooms with full facilities for pollen and plant macrofossil processing and analysis, tree-ring analysis and elementary sedimentological analysis. Field equipment includes livingstone and hiller sediment corers, tree-ring corers and chainsaws, GPS, radios, and misc. field camp supplies. Areas of active field research include the northern Great Plains and adjacent Rocky Mountains, the North American subarctic, Russia and Siberia.

    Canada's Geography ...
Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada's land mass is 9 093 507 km2, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. From east to west, Canada encompasses six time zones. In addition to its coastlines on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Canada has a third sea coast on the Arctic Ocean, giving it the longest coastline of any country. To the south, Canada shares an 8 891 kilometre boundary with the United States. To the north, the Arctic islands come within 800 kilometres of the North Pole. Canada's neighbour across the Arctic Ocean is Russia. Because of the harsh northern climate, only 12 percent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Thus, most of the population of 30 million live within a few hundred kilometres of the southern border, where the climate is milder, in a long thin band stretching between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.
