62. ARCTIC NORWAY: ASPECTS OF HISTORY, CULTURE AND GOVERNMENT - The Information Camp
The picture on top of the page illustrates a traditional activity of great importancein the life and culture both of Arctic norway and other northern regions.
http://www.sv.uit.no/arctic/camp.htm
The Campaign It is likely that some of you are here because of – or maybe even in spite of – a poster which for a while has been seen on bulletin boards at universities and colleges in Europe and North America. We realise that many people will have a negative reaction to this poster, and that some will find the picture strongly provocative. However, our hope is that by reading this page you will get a better understanding of our reasons for choosing this image for the poster.
Throughout our history seal hunting has been an economically important activity here in the north. The picture on top of the page illustrates a traditional activity of great importance in the life and culture both of Arctic Norway and other northern regions. This course – specially designed for visiting and exchange students at our university – is not solely or indeed primarily about Arctic hunting traditions. On the contrary, as the title indicates, that is only one aspect of the history, culture and governing structures of northern Norway which the course deals with.
Needless to say, our purpose is not to promote sealing or whaling - neither of which, by the way, has much economic importance for Arctic Norway any more. And it is certainly not our intention to lead or point anyone in any specific direction with regard to the very emotional debate on activities which involve killing animals. All we want is to create a platform of learning and debate on which students from all over the world can come and learn about us and find knowledge, and discuss anything relevant to this course. The role of a good academic institution is to provoke questions and stimulate debates, and to analyse and criticise all matters from different angles. That is the role we try to fill, and our university has the necessary competence and professionalism to do that.

That being the case, it should have been another title and not so saturated a subject in this book. The text really did not have alot of meat to it. Pleasant, but not substantive.

Country Flag ... Travel Warning History Norway's first settlers arrived over 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. These early hunters and gatherers followed the glaciers as they retreated north, pursuing migratory reindeer herds. The country's greatest impact on history was during the Viking Age, a period thought to have begun with the plundering of England's Lindisfarne monastery by Nordic pirates in 793 AD. Over the next century, the Vikings made raids throughout Europe, establishing settlements along the way. Viking leader Harald Fairhair unified Norway around 900 and King Olaf, adopting the religion of the lands he had conquered, converted the people to Christianity a century later.

Advent is the preparation for Christ’s Nativity and marks the beginning of the church year. It comprises the four Sundays before Christmas Day on December 25th. Advent is a time for preparations. In no other month are so many arts and crafts, presents, Christmas decorations, biscuits and sweets churned as then. Nothing is better than homemade. Christmas literally begins to creep under one’s skin, lifting spirits and creating a cheerful, joyful atmosphere . Every Sunday during Advent we light a candle, and every day we open a door in the Christmas calendar. Norwegians all become kinder, more thoughtful and caring during the Advent. St. Lucia's Day December 13
December 13th is celebrated in honour of Saint Lucia, the young girl who according to the legend died a martyr in Sicily. St. Lucia’s day is celebrated in schools, day-care centers and hospitals, with processions led by a young Lucia in a white robe with a crown of lights on her head and a candle in her hand. In Norway, this night used to be called "Lussinatten". It was the longest night of the year and no work was to be done. From that night until Christmas, spirits, gnomes and trolls roamed the earth. Lussi, a feared enchantress, punished anyone who dared to work. Legend also has it that farm animals talked to each other on Lussinatten, and that they were given additional feed on this longest night of the year.

Arctic Norway: Aspects of History, Culture and Government n Course Description
Three departments at the Faculty of Social Sciences contribute to this course: The Department of History, the Department of Social Anthropology and the Department of Political Science. The course is specially designed for foreign students, and lectures and discussions will all be in English. The course has University status as a "Socrates-course", but welcomes all student categories. Through this course students will obtain a basic knowledge of the history, culture and the governance of North Norway as a part of the nation-state of Norway and of the Arctic region. The region’s special features are presented and explained through the perspectives of history, social anthropology and political science. This gives a multidisciplinary introduction to central aspects of North Norway’s regional characteristics; settlement patterns, resource adaptation, governmental structure and cultural diversity. The course lasts one semester and is offered every autumn. Upon successful completion of the exams, the course qualifies for 30 ECTS-credits. This corresponds to 10 Norwegian vekttall and represents a full course load for one semester.
