DEAR EDUCATOR,
Do your standards of learning (SOLs) suggest that students compare other nations with the USA? Have you considered Norway? Here's what Tom Christensen and B. Guy Peters report in Structure, Culture, and Governance: A Comparison of Norway and the United States (Rowman and Littlefield, 1999). Both nations, they observe, are deeply committed to democracy. But Norwegians have an "historically rooted willingness to accept a strong ... redistributive role for the public sector," while Americans show "less willingness" to allow government "a significant role in steering society." Students using this unit can explore that comparison and other aspects of life in Norway — literally, one of the world's most "giving" nations. CURRICULUM STANDARDS
This unit will serve courses in history, world regions, government, and contemporary issues (9-12). Among prototypical SOLs supported by the unit are these three, cited from: Expectations of Excellence: Curriculum Standards for Social Studies (EE);

"The Land of the Midnight Sun"
The story, is from Norway , a country in Europe.
Map courtesy of http://www.theodora.com/maps used with permission
Norway is one of the far northern places in the world where, in the summertime, the sun will not set at all! That means even at midnight , the sun will still shine in the sky!
That is why Norway is called, "The Land of the Midnight Sun."
The people of Norway have a special holiday in June, at "midsummer," to celebrate this special time.

    Whether in the country or in the city, norway's landscape and geographycan truly take one's breath away. It is a sight that everyone
    http://www.franklincoll.edu/Jouweb/pub/Fleck/Winter_Root_folder/landscape_geogra
    In Norway there are many different modes of transportation. Whether on boat, train, or foot breathtaking sites dazzle the eye. Deep fjords of calm waters sit at the base of gigantic mountains. The fjords are inlets into the country from the ocean. Seals may be seen playing on the banks despite the freezing temperatures. Along the shores there are many small scattered villages. The smallest village on the Auerland Fjord has eight people. One house that sits alone atop a mountain has no contact with the outside world. Near this house is a Viking burial site sitting at the base of a mountain. The site is a mound covered with stones. There are many Viking burial sites throughout the land of Norway. Trains are one of the most popular forms of transportation. The trains not only take the traveler through cities, but also through the countryside, where untouched, snow-covered land seems to go on forever. Mountains are draped with blue icicles and ice falls cascade down into their valleys. As the train travels up and down the sides of the mountains the sunrises and sunsets radiate off of the snow. It seems the word "lazy" is not in the Norwegian vocabulary. Most people walk everywhere they need to go. In Oslo and Bergen, the two largest cities, cobble-stone and brick streets are lined with many shops. Bergen is known for its famous harbor side houses. The houses have been converted into shops, and are relatively old and generally three or four stories high and very narrow.

  • The History of the Norwegian Flag
    The flag as we know it today, was born in 1821. The colours are an inheritage from the free countries of Europe in the 19th century, like Great Britain, France as well as the United States. It's the same colours as in the tricolour, the symbol of the revolution in France. The cross is an inheritage from our Nordic neighbours, Denmark and Sweden. Later, other Nordic countries have followed in this tradition: Finnland, Iceland, the Faeroe Islands and Åland.
  • The Flag of Norway
    Flag Description: red with a blue cross outlined in white that extends to the edges of the flag; the vertical part of the cross is shifted to the hoist side in the style of the Dannebrog (Danish flag)
  • National Animal, Flower and Bird What is Norway's national animal, flower and bird? Find out by visiting this site.
  • Symbols of Norway: Milk Milk symbolises health, the honest work on the land, the beauty of the Norwegian scenery and not least pure whiteness. In this latter respect, milk holds a position comparable to snow, and it goes without saying that an urban-minded no-nonsense capitalist like Per Hatling must fight in vain against a national totem of this magnitude.
