BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... NORWAY Norway traces its proud history to the Vikings, whose legendary seafaring skills took them to almost every place reachable by water. Before the year 1000, the norse had traveled on sea voyages as far as Greenland, which was colonized then. Christianity came relatively late (the beginning of the 11th century) and soon, Norway had achieved the apex of its power. In 1397, all the Scandinavian kingdoms were united under Danish control. At that point, Norway per se ceased to exist as an independent entity Danish rule would continue for another 400 years. During the early 19th century, Norway tried to reestablish its own sovereignty and in 1815, Sweden conceded an independent Norway in union with Sweden. This union scheme was never popular and in 1905 the Norwegian Storting pronounced the union over; the Swedish king was replaced with a prince of Denmark, who ruled Norway for over half a century as Haakon VII. Though Norway had been neutral during World War I, and tried to remain so during the Second World War, Germany invaded in 1940. A government-in-exile was established in London. Resistance to the collaborationist government of Vidkun Quisling was strong and with the Nazi exit in 1945, the King and his government-in-exile were returned victorious. Post war, Norway became an original member of the United Nations. A Norwegian, Trygve Lie, was the first Secretary General of the organization. It became a member of NATO and the European Free Trade Association. Though Norway provided its citizens with a model society in many ways, it also faced the burdensome economic consequences of such a society but has continued to enjoy, for the most part, enviable stability and prosperity.

The Early Years. In the early 1880's there was an exodus of immigrants from Europe to the New World, lured by the prospects of more space, cheaper more productive land and the chance to a better way of life. Many of these early comers located first in the United States or Eastern Canada. Meanwhile, the great North-West of Canada was being surveyed and opened up for homesteads and word of the wonderful opportunities to be found there were widely advertised and reached the ears of many in Minnesota, as well as elsewhere. The Mr. and Mrs. Ole M. Olstad family and four grown sons were one of these families that decided to pull up roots in Minnesota and head for the Northwest Territories. They made their way to the Duhamel settlement near the Battle River. Duhamel had been settled for some time but the Olstad family chose to settle several miles south of the Battle River and filed homesteads for themselves and for friends and relatives from the United States. The Naming of New Norway Most of the eligible adults availed themselves of homesteads as well as buying C.P.R. land which was available for $3.00 per acre and so the large family soon owned a considerable acreage in the surrounding country, and for a time the district was known as the "Olstad District". As other Norweigen families moved in as well families from other nationalities the name "New Norway was given to the little settlement which started about 1895 one mile east of the present townsite.

Medieval Norway
The history of Norway before the age of the Vikings is indistinct from that of the rest of Scandinavia. In the 9th cent. the country was still divided among the numerous petty kings of the fylker. Harold I , of the Yngling or Scilfing dynasty (which claimed descent from one of the old Norse gods), defeated the petty kings (c.900) and conquered the Shetlands and the Orkneys, but failed to establish permanent unity. Harold's campaigns drove many nobles and their followers to settle in Iceland and France. In the next two centuries Norsemen raided widely in W Europe and established the Norse duchy of Normandy. Harold himself concentrated on developing a dynasty; before he died (c.935) the country was divided among his sons, but one of them, Haakon I , defeated (c.935) his brothers and temporarily reunited the kingdom.

Norwegian history is often associated with the Viking Age, which lasted from AD 800-1000. During this period, Norwegian viking ships sailed to the Caspian Sea in the east and to Ireland in the west. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Greenland and North America, sailed through the Mediterranean to Constantinople (Istanbul) and founded colonies on Iceland, the Faeroes and the Shetlands, and in Normandy in France. During the following centuries, Christianity gained strength in Norway. The cities of Nidaros (now Trondheim), Oslo and Bergen were established as bishoprics and the power of the monarchy was consolidated up to 1380, when Norway was united with Denmark. Trade ties with Europe increased, particularly with northern Germany, and the Hanseatic merchants had a strong influence in Bergen. With the Reformation, the Roman Catholic Church lost its power and the Lutheran faith was introduced. In the period up to 1814, Norway lost its possessions in the West. Industries such as sawmills, herring fisheries and iron works developed, and the Nordic region was devastated by several wars. Under the Kiel Treaty of 1814, Denmark had to cede Norway to Sweden. Norway wrote its own Constitution on 17 May the same year but, after a brief war, was forced into union with Sweden. This union lasted until 1905, when Norway once again became an independent kingdom under King Haakon VII. The end of the 19th century saw the golden age of the Norwegian merchant fleet, the first railway between Oslo and Eidsvoll, which was built in 1854, and the beginning of the first great wave of immigration to North America. There was a transition from subsistence farming to commercial farming and Norway underwent comprehensive industrialisation and urbanisation, which led to important social reforms.

A Brief History of Troms
by Nils Johan Fosli, Oslo, Norway
Edited by Rosalie Sundin
The coast of Troms (the northwestern region of Norway) had a small Norwegian population a hundred years before the beginning of the era known as the Viking Age (ca. 1000 AD.) Just before 900 A.D., the Viking chief Ottar (Othere) visited the court of King Alfred the Great in England, where his words were recorded in writing. According to Ottar, he was the Norwegian that lived the farthest north of all others. Historians know Ottar was a wealthy man by the standards of his day, and an important source of his income was from the taxes paid to him by the Sami population in the far north. While the exact location of Ottar’s home is unidentified, it is known that he owned a farm in Troms.
The early Norwegian population in Troms were fishermen, whose livelihoods required them to live as close to the fishing grounds as possible. The land along the fjords were populated by the people known as "Sea Sami," who had seasonal camps throughout the area, and moved from one location to another. Hunting and fishing were the primary livelihoods of the Sea-Sami people.
In the 1700's the Norwegians living along the coast started to resettle along the fjords of Troms (Balsfjord, Lyngen, Nordreisa and Kvænangen.) These new Norsk settlers brought cows, sheep, goats and horses with them to their new settlements along the fjords, where most combined farming and fishing as their sources of income. For over 200 years, this combination of fishing and farming was the primary occupation of the Norwegian population in Troms. The existence of these new Norwegian settlements gradually forced the Sea-Sami to adjust their way of living; consequently they gave up their nomadic lifestyles and became farmers like their Norwegian counterparts.

NORWAY HISTORY
Norway was incorporated in 1797 when Maine was part of Massachusetts. The town grew throughout the first half of the 19 th Century, due to its position as a trading center for the surrounding area. In the middle of that century, Norway commenced a steady 100-year expansion of farming, milling and manufacturing. Prosperous sawmills, textile mills, tanneries, saddle manufacturers and shoe factories operated in Norway during this period. Downtown grew to accommodate major retail and wealthy residential neighborhoods. A fire destroyed most of the eastern end of Maine Street in 1894. The great reconstruction that followed is a defining period in Norway’s history. Most of the rebuilt structures stand today as some of the best examples of period architecture in Maine. These buildings comprise Norway’s historic district. From the 1950’s to the present day, Norway’s traditional economy declined severely. All but one of the commercial dairy farms went out of business, and many of the historic factories and downtown stores moved away or closed altogether. The jobless rate remained near 10% for most of that period until only recently.

SCOUTING IN NORWAY NORWEGIAN GUIDE AND SCOUT ASSOCIATION In Norway there are two associations: KFUK (Y.W.C.A.), and NSF, which is the biggest. NSF (Norwgian Scout Association) include both sexes. NSF is member of both WOSM and WAGGGS. The country is divided in geographical districts, which are containing scout groups. Scouting was founded in 1911 and recognition by the World Bureau in 1922. Norway was a founding member of the World Bureau. There are about 30,000 registered members in all sections. The association is open to all boys and girls of all races, religions and nationalities. The program is based on four areas of activities arranged according to various degrees of difficulty and giving the Scouts and Guides to choose freely. The areas are friendship, outdoor life, practical knowledge and quality of life. Sea Scouting is very popular. Many groups own their own boats and follow programs based on life on the sea. Scouts inland, participate in canoeing and were among the pioneers in bringing kayaking to Norway. The program during the winter is based on snow activities. Skiing and camping in snow caves are among the popular activities.

Our Norwegian Heritage Norway: History The forefathers of modern Norwegians were prehistoric hunters and farmers that arrived after the last Ice Age and other groups that continued to arrive through the Roman period and on through the 6th Century AD. The settlements in Southern and Western Norway reached saturation point prior to the Viking Era and it is from these areas that the Vikings sailed. Viking Era (793 - 1066): Although many Norwegians glorify these seaworthy marauders, their victims had other opinions. It should be noted that the Vikings did not just destroy lives and property while stealing valuables and people for slaves, they also created colonies in Ireland, Scotland, and Iceland and extensively explored the northern Atlantic Ocean. This era is said to have begun in 793 and ended in 1066 with the defeat of King Harald Hardruler in 1066. In the southeast and north Norway, on the other hand, settlement based on agriculture and other activities spread to previously uninhabited areas, particularly in the mountains and valleys. Unification Era (1020 - 1350): At the beginning of this era, Norway was not unified, but by 1060 the country was unified by force with Christianity forcibly introduced and finally in1030, becoming the "state religion" with the death of martyred King Olaf. The 12th and the 13th centuries were a time of growth and prosperity during which Oslo became Norway's capital. During this time

The first men to appear in what is now Norway, emerged from dim pre-history when the great inland ice sheets were retreating over Scandinavia. 10,000 years ago the forefathers of today's Norwegians hunted reindeer and other prey on their long trek north. The land they came to had for centuries borne the weight of the icecap, so the coastline was about 200 meters higher than it is today. The oldest proofs of human activity were discovered on a hill in the southeast region of Østfold, not far from the southern frontier with Sweden. At that time the hill was probably an offshore island, just south of the glacier tip.
Ancient Norway (pre-800 A.D.) Top of page
There is no general agreement on where the ancestors of today's Norwegians came from, or on the routes they took on their journey north, but one of these routes certainly passed through Østfold. Artifacts found at settlements there are of the same type that have been discovered in southern Sweden and in Denmark. A further possible route may have led from the so-called North Sea continent to southwest Norway. These first Norwegians were hunters who, wherever nature permitted it, settled in small groups. They left proof of their existence in flint tools, clay vessels, and not least, rock carvings. In every part of Norway remain specimens of their art, hewn or ground into the rock. The carvings depict their prey: reindeer, moose, deer, bears and fish. People, or boats appear only seldom.
