Nov 8, 1999 More Nuclear Disasters By Saul Landau The Lesson Unlearned "We have contained the spread of radiation from last week's nuclear accident," Japanese authorities assured their citizens. They blame the chain reaction on improper handling of materials by low level workers. As if that explanation will sedate the Japanese public! The Japanese know all too well the long term effects of radiation on human health - thanks to their experience with atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. More recently, we have the Chernobyl nuclear plant explosion in the Ukraine. Ukranian children still suffer from radiation sickness and people in the path of the fallout for thousands of miles learned the horrible lessons of a nuclear "accident." Then came the Three Mile Island miscue in the United States. Remember how authorities there swore they had contained the damage when they had not? Last month a Hanford Washington reactor developed a scary radioactive bubble. Authorities assured the public no danger existed. Mention Marion, Ohio, Paducah, Kentucky two of many memory triggers that recall nuclear mishaps. In the 1970s Cincinnati General Hospital doctors used a Pentagon grant to "treat" cancer patients with whole body radiation. The Pentagon wanted to find out how people would respond in nuclear battlefield conditions. From 1945-1971, the nuclear gang dumped radioactive waste in barrels into the ocean. The barrels have leaked. Recall the above ground tests at the Marshall Islands and other Pacific Atolls, causing terrible human sufferingin the name of National Security, under the façade of fighting the Cold War. The nuclear gang classified information that would have alerted the public to health dangers.

South Korean president to visit Washington to discuss North Korean nuclear standoff Wednesday April 09, 2003
By SOO-JEONG LEE
Associated Press Writer SEOUL, South Korea (AP) South Korea's president will make his first trip to the United States next month to seek a peaceful solution to the standoff with North Korea over Pyongyang's nuclear programs, his office said Wednesday. Roh Moo-hyun will meet President Bush on May 14 and spend five days in Washington, New York and San Francisco, Roh's office said in a statement. Washington wants to settle the nuclear crisis through multilateral channels, saying North Korea's suspected nuclear weapons programs threaten not just American interests but also those of Russia, China, Japan and South Korea. But North Korea wants one-on-one talks to negotiate a nonaggression treaty. It has accused the United States of planning to invade once it is done fighting in Iraq.

The North Korean statement, the latest in a series of warnings, came a day after the White House said it had "robust plans for any contingencies," including military action. The United States has 37,000 troops in South Korea, and has maintained a force there since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, leaving the North and South technically still at war. "If the U.S. moves to bolster aggression troops are unchecked, the whole land of Korea will be reduced to ashes and the Koreans will not escape horrible nuclear disasters," North Korea's official news agency, KCNA, said. In Washington, President Bush on Friday said "all options are on the table" to solve the nuclear standoff with North Korea.

The Sobering Facts About Nuclear Disasters Nuclear disasters are due to peacetime accidents. They may involve an explosion or the release of radioactive matter in the air or water. The explosion will devastate the vicinity surrounding the center of explosion. The amount of damage will gradually decrease farther away from the center. Additional damage will be caused by fire storms, windstorms that make conditions ideal for spreading fire started from the damaged structure. Deaths will result from three causes: those sustaining direct injuries from the blast and subsequent fires those perishing from high levels of radiation those suffering injuries from cleaning the damaged area, extinguishing fires, or from contracting radiation sickness from exposure. Responses towards a nuclear disaster should include rescues, the construction of emergency housing, and the formation of triage. Long term responses should consist of cleanup efforts and other necessary procedures for a nuclear disaster. A nuclear disaster will likely require the aid of all major emergency service, including defense departments, and several federal agencies.

The primary mission of the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) is to save lives and protect property in the event of a man-made or natural disaster. The secondary mission of the EMA is to restore public services and to expedite the recovery and rehabilitation of individuals in the event of large-scale disasters. These objectives are met by conducting coordinated operations throughout the four phases of Emergency Management: mitigation preparedness response and recovery Mitigation: the process of eliminating or reducing the probability of occurrence of an emergency or disaster. Mitigation activities should be considered long before an emergency occurs. Preparedness: the planning stage which insures the most effective, efficient response, efforts to minimize damages and laying the groundwork for response operations. Preparedness is an "insurance policy " against emergencies. Response: provides emergency assistance for casualties, reduces the probability or extent of secondary damage and other measures that will enhance future recovery operations. Response is the first phase that occurs

Probability of Nuclear Power Plant Disasters Back in 1975, nuclear plants were being built around the U.S., and proponents were touting their immense safety. I wrote an essay then about the potential probability of nuclear power plant disasters. Through a very simple probability analysis, I estimated that although the odds of failure of any one plant may be utterly miniscule, the cumulative odds of at least some failures among many plants, over time, is anything but negligible. I sent the essay to the local newspaper (at the time, in Eureka, California) as an extended letter to the editor, responding to a recent pro-nuclear article on the subject. My essay was soundly rejected on the ostensible grounds that they publish articles only written by their own staff. Yet, soon thereafter, they published some extended letters to the editor that extolled the virtues of nuclear plants. That was in 1975. On March 28, 1979, Reactor 2 at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant suffered a partial meltdown. And on April 26, 1986, the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl suffered a catastrophic failure, releasing immense clouds of nuclear waste that would contaminate parts of western Russia and northern Europe.

EFFECTS OF A nuclear EXPLOSION. by Ira Helfand, MD, PSR PastPresident. TheEffects of a nuclear Explosion on a Major American City.

WHAT TO DO IF A NUCLEAR DISASTER OCCURS Order your RS-500 now! Because radioactivity levels can vary greatly with time and location, it is very important that you keep monitoring radiation levels whether you stay at home or need to escape. Information regarding contamination of your area may be unavailable or outdated. Keep your RS-500 with you wherever you go and check often. There will be two major causes of exposure to radiation:
  • direct exposure to radiations (mainly gamma rays) from the primary source exposure to radioactive materials, including substances that have become radioactive after being exposed to neutrons

After the initial burst of radiations, winds will play a major role in the contamination process. See on the picture how western Europe was contaminated following the Chernobyl accident. Chernbyl is located on the right side of the picture.
THREE WAYS TO MINIMIZE RADIATION EXPOSURE: Time, Distance, and Shielding Time —Most radioactivity loses its strength fairly quickly. Limiting the time spent near the source of radiation reduces the amount of radiation exposure you will receive. Following an accident, local authorities will monitor any release of radiation and determine the level of protective actions and when the threat has passed. Distance —The more distance between you and the source of the radiation, the less radiation you will receive. In the case of a nuclear explosion, the radiation dose decreases by about one-half for every 200-yard increase in distance from the hypocenter. Keep also in mind that radioactive material can be transported by the wind, ocean streams or rivers on very large distances, even from one continent to the next. In the most serious nuclear power plant accident, local officials will likely call for an evacuation, thereby increasing the distance between you and the radiation source.

Chernobyl Disaster
In 1986, a nuclear reactor explosion at Chernobyl,Ukraine, created the worst nuclear disaster in history. The nuclear disaster killed 32 people, injured more than 200, and poisoned countless others. To contain the disaster, engineers built a huge concrete sarcophagus around the disaster area, which basically hid the radioactive reactor rather than alleviating the problem. Now, years later, what is said to be the world's worst nuclear meltdown, is coming back to haunt us. The concrete and steel "container" around the site is now in jeopardy of collapse. Tiny cracks are beginning to appear on the surface of the sarcophagus. The Robot Pioneer has been built to go into the Chernobyl reactor to repair the damage. Three Mile Island Nuclear Disaster Robot
On March 28, 1979 at 4:00 AM, a minor malfunction occurred in the system which feeds water to the steam generators at the Three Mile Island (TMI) Unit 2 Nuclear Generating Station. This event led eventually to the most serious commercial nuclear accident in US history and spurned fundamental changes in the operation and regulation of nuclear power plants. Click Here For More Information on TMI
The resulting contamination of the reactor core required a ten year cleanup plan. The robot Houdini was built to assist in the cleanup effort. The robot was built by Rezone Company,NREC and CMU personnel.
