Objective Students will count and compare amounts of money less than or equal to one dollar. Overview of the Lesson Through a collection of hands-on activities, students gain experience in counting, exchanging, and comparing money. Students begin the lesson by finding all of the possible combinations of coins that can be used to equal a specified amount of money. They then compare two amounts of money and use number sense skills and problem solving strategies to move coins from one group to another so that both groups are equal in value. Students play the Money Exchange Game as they roll a die with money amounts and try to be the first person to obtain exactly $1.00. Students must make monetary exchanges in the game such as trading ten pennies for a dime. The students are then immersed in an economics activity as they shop in the teacher made puppet supply store where they are given one dollar to buy items to make a paper bag puppet. Materials Teacher:
  • Money Chart — Divide a 9” x 16” piece of tag board into 4 columns. Label the columns: Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters. You may use a picture of the coins rather than words. If you wish to use the chart for other activities, you may make cards with labels that students could place at the top of the columns.

Extensions and Connections
  • Choose a mystery "alien" fraction. Give clues one at a time until students have guessed the identity of the mystery alien. For example, one clue could be, "I am greater than 1/8." The next clue could be that the alien fraction is smaller than 1/2. The third clue could be that the total number of pieces is eight. Students should conclude that the alien fraction is 3/8.
  • Have students locate books about quilts and read them. Give the students a template for a quilt with rows of squares. Students color the quilt in a pattern of their choosing and give the fractional part of the quilt that each color represents.
  • Have students design a garden for the school. Divide the garden into equal parts using string and sticks. Students can make a map of the garden on paper. Have students research the type of plants that would grow best in their garden and draw these plants on the map. Students should then tell the fractional part of the garden that each type of plant will cover.

Estimating Products of Whole Numbers
This lesson plan corresponds to Specific Curriculum Outcome:
Grade 5: B11 Objectives:
The students will estimate products of two whole numbers. Procedure:
  • Demonstrate the rounding method of estimating products.
Point out that when estimating a product of 2 whole numbers, it's better to round off the largest factor.
Do a few examples. Ex. 9 x 48 = 432 The most accurate estimate was the one in which the larger factor was rounded off.
    (9 x 50 was the best estimate.) estimate 10 x 48 = 480 estimate 9 x 50 = 450 Demonstrate the front-end method for estimating products.
Do a few examples. Ex. 4 x 634 4 x 600 = 2400. Adjusting for 4 x 34, 2500 would be a good estimate. Write a few multiplication problems on the board and have the students estimate their products. After a few minutes, get feedback from the students regarding both the estimates and the estimation methods used. Assignment:
The students will estimate the products of several problems from the text, indicate their strategies, and check their estimates for accuracy with a calculator.

Count On It: Number Sense for Grades K-5
This course is offered online via the Internet. This course is designed to help elementary school teachers understand number sense, why it is important for elementary students to have, and how to effectively assess what type of number sense students possess. Participants will examine lesson plans, Web resources and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards dedicated to helping students develop a richer and deeper understanding for numbers. Through these resources, participants will explore ways they can develop lesson plans and enhance student learning by using manipulatives, both traditional and technological, and other forms of technology.
This is an online facilitated course which students participate in via the Internet from their computers at home or school. A facilitator guides the participants through activities, discussions, readings and development of course goals. Participants will complete all of their course work online. There is a two hour required training session that participants attend at the start of the course.

    Length of sessions:
    • Three 30 minute sessions
    • Two 45 minute sessions
    Introduction Activity (45 minute session)
Read Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears by Verna Aardema. Discuss what senses are used by the animals in the story. Which sense is used when the animals first meet each other? How is the story passed on from one animal to another? Extend discussion to compare what the students know about mosquitoes and the information about mosquitoes in the story. Introduce the students to the different life stages of the mosquitoes using the cards. Discuss how the larvae and pupae live in the water, while adults fly and tell about the three stages in a mosquito's life. With the aquatic container, have students look for the larvae, pupae, and adults. Talk about what each stage eats (larvae eat things in the water we can't see (bacteria), pupae don't eat, both male and female adults eat sweet juices in flowers (nectar) and females eat blood). As a class, count the number of adult mosquitoes in the container. Place one picture of the adult mosquito for each one counted (from Mosquito Cards Activity Sheet ) on a chart with days of the week. Continue counting the number of the adults each day and add to the chart.

Unit Plan for Number Sense Curriculum Unit Plan Mathematics Seventh Grade Unit 8: Number Sense Abstract In this unit students expand their understanding of number systems as they examine number concepts for integers (positive and negative whole numbers), rational numbers (positive and negative fractions or decimals), and exponents. Students acquire a sense of order, magnitude, and relationships among integers, fractions, decimals, and exponents. They also explore number bases other than base ten. Students demonstrate their understanding of number systems and relationships by using manipulative materials, creating illustrative drawings, and writing mathematical explanations. In Feb. and March, 2003, two dozen Meade County educators will be working on four modules described below.
    Publishing on the Web
In this module, learners will explore the use of the Internet for school based Websites and other kinds of Web-publishing projects. Learners will see how Web-based information can be used in the classroom by teachers and administrators, and even to keep in touch with parents and community members. Learners will also master the basics to prepare students to build a home-page, and they are asked to create a home-page for themselves.
Creating Units to Support Differing Learning Styles
In this module, you will learn to design a thematic unit with technology-based adaptations to facilitate learning for all students. Developing curriculum that meets the learning needs of this range of students is challenging. Technology can be used to help support instruction for all learners.
Inquiry Based Learning in the Classroom
Inquiry-based learning invites students to explore a question or problem, to make discoveries, and thoughtfully investigate those discoveries in their search for knowledge. In this module, learners will be encouraged to use every possible opportunity to take what they have learned and tailor it to their own situation, their own classroom, and their own teaching environment. Through a dynamic combination of text, video, interactive activities, and online discussion, learners explore the main components and discover the value of inquiry-based learning. The module concludes by challenging learners to create an engaging inquiry-based facilitation plan.
