The Year of Nunavut by Dianne Maguire
The vast Northwest Territories covered almost the whole of Northern Canada. On April 1 st , 1999, it was divided to create a new territory called Nunavut. The name means " Our land" in Inuktitut – the language of the Inuit people. The Inuit form 85 percent of the population of 27,219 in the new Territory of Nunavut. There are 58 different groups of Inuit peoples who have some culture, history and beliefs the same. They live in 28 communities in Nunavut, which includes Baffin Island or Qikigtaaluk, the Keewatin District or Kivalliq, and Hudson’s Bay and its islands. Nunavut is an area of 1,994,000 square kilometers. It is one fifth of Canada’s land mass . It also has the North Pole and the Magnetic North Pole as part of its territory. The capital, Iqaluit (population 4500) was once called Frobisher Bay. It is the home of the 19 member legislature and territorial government. The court system is unusual in Canada because it often uses traditional Inuit forms of punishment instead of jail sentences Unlike the provinces in southern Canada, Nunavut doesn’t’ have a lot of roads. The main highway is 21 kilometers from Arctic Bay to Nanisivik. Instead of using cars and roads, people in Nunavut fly from place to place, or travel over the snow in
