Nunavut Vacation Canada's Newest Territory Time to head north to discover Canada's newest territory, Nunavut. Actually the land has always been there, and it has always held a fascination for those who want to "get a way from it all" or embark on an adventure to simpler lifestyle. This is not a place where you can expect a high standard of amenities or a wide choice of accommodations Iqaluit has about 175 hotel rooms in their four hotels and a few places where you can expect quality dining. Most other towns may only have one place where lodging can be attained, which may be a shared bedroom and bathrooms. This is a place for the outdoors enthusiast and adventure-seekers. Common tourist activities include dog-sledding, sea kayaking, hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching tours.

Canadian Culture I was recently asked about Canadian Culture - things people would want to know before visiting Canada. Simple enough question if you come from a country with a cultural history, but what about Canada? Italy, Germany, Japan, India, and many other countries all have well defined cultures steeped in hundreds if not thousands of years of traditions, customs and language. For most adults, just mentioning Chinese culture brings to mind any number of mental images, which clearly define for the person what Chinese culture means to them. But what about Canadian Culture? Our original settlers still maintain their culture as they have known it for over 5,000 years, but the Inuit culture didn't really catch on in the southern regions of the country.

Invitation to Nunavut
Canada's new arctic territory seeks tourists
By DAVID CRARY Associated Press Canada's newest territory may not exist until next year, but Nunavut already has a travel handbook and the authorsand editors don't sugar-coat their invitation, emphasizing in great detail the many perils facing visitors to the eastern Arctic. Snowdrifts, ice and an abandoned car are shown in Iqaluit in this March, 1998 file photo. CP
(First featured: March 25, 1999)
IF YOU GO:
GETTING THERE:
Flights to Iqaluit originate in Montreal and Ottawa. The town of Rankin Inlet can be reached from Winnipeg or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Round-trip airfares under $1,000 are hard to come by. Within Nunavut, most smaller communities are served by twice- or thrice-weekly scheduled flights. There are no highways into Nunavut or connecting its far-flung towns.
CLIMATE: In midwinter, most of Nunavut gets only about three hours of daylight, and daytime temperatures average around -20 F (-30 C). In the summer, when the sun is up nearly around the clock, daytime temperatures are usually around 50 F (10 C) in Iqaluit and around freezing in the farthest-north areas. Most of Nunavut receives relatively little precipitation, but frequent high winds can create blizzard conditions in the winter.

This change will alter the map of Canada for the first time since Newfoundland joined Confederation in 1949. The concept of dividing the Northwest Territories dates back to the 1950s, however the more recent arguments for creating two new territories center around the desire of people in Nunavut - the Inuit - to have their own, more culturally-based government using the native language Inuktitut . Specifically, in the 1970s the concept was proposed as part of the comprehensive Inuit land claim settlement . In the 1980s public vote to divide the Northwest Territories, 56.6% indicated in favor, and over the next decade the Federal Government announced its support of Nunavut, and boundaries were discussed. In 1992 Inuit overwhelmingly approved the Nunavut final land claim agreement and took a step towards forming a new territory and government. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Northwest Territories Government Leader Nellie Cournoyea, and Tunngavik Federation of Nunavut President Paul Quassa signed the deal in Iqaluit in May, 1993. (Tunngavik Federation of Nunavut was the organization that negotiated the Inuit land claim and has since been replaced by

About Canada: Nunavut
The Land
On April 1, 1999, the map of Canada changed with the birth of the new territory of Nunavut. Nunavut means "our land" in Inuktitut, the Inuit language. It is a vast territory - larger than Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec combined - that contains one fifth of Canada's land. This is the first major change to the map of Canada since Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949. Nunavut's lands are made up of the central and eastern portions of the Northwest Territories (NWT). To the Inuit people, this land, their ancestral home for thousands of years, has always been Nunavut. The idea for the territory with its own government was articulated by Inuit leaders in the 1970s. The History
As the newest partner in the federation, Nunavut is the latest development in Canada's nation building. All Canadians can take pride in the outstanding achievement the birth of the new territory represents. Canada has redrawn its map peacefully, democratically and in partnership. The creation of Nunavut also marks a profound shift in how Canada relates to Aboriginal peoples. Inuit, as the majority population of Nunavut, are shaping the territorial government in keeping with their culture, traditions and aspirations.
