Geography April 1, 1999, marked the birth of a brand new Canadian territory - Nunavut. This is the first big change to our country's map since Newfoundland became part of Canada 50 years ago. To learn more about Nunavut, please visit the following site
The tundra
The tundra is found throughout the world's circumpolar region north of the treeline (the northern limit of forests), where the ground is most often frozen for much of the year. This frozen ground is called permafrost. Tundra regions only get as much rainfall as most deserts (very little!). The fact that there is very little evaporation (it seldom gets warm enough) means that the soils stay wet through the summer. Then, when winter arrives, the water that seeped into the thin, thawed, top layer of the soil freezes again! Pingos
Pingos are ice mountains - they are formed by ice "growing" upwards in the ground through expansion. They are often formed in the bottoms of lakes that have drained away. Pingos are found in the permafrost (land where the ground remains frozen year round) areas of the Arctic.

Re-mapping the Arctic
One-year countdown begins for Canada's new territory
By DAVID CRARY Associated Press
QUICK FACTS
GEOGRAPHY: 770,000 square miles. About 45 percent of the territory is on Canadian mainland; hundreds of islands account for the rest.
POPULATION: 26,000, including more than 21,000 Inuit, the aboriginals formerly known as Eskimos whose ancestors began settling in region more than 4,000 years ago.
ECONOMY: Biggest employers by far are territorial and federal governments. Many Inuit still hunt or fish for much of their food. There is long-term potential for oil and mineral development, but region relies heavily on federal funding.

Canadian Geography and Butterfly Distribution
Canada, with a land area of 9,922,335 square kilometres (almost 4 million square miles), is the second largest country in the world in area. It extends more than 5000 kilometres east to west from St. John's in Newfoundland to Victoria on Vancouver Island, and more than 4600 kilometres from the top of Ellesmere Island in the Arctic to Point Pelee in southern Ontario to the south. Most of this vast area, however, is sparsely populated, with the majority of Canada's 30 million inhabitants living in a narrow zone along Lake Ontario and in the St. Lawrence River Valley, an area that occupies less than 1 per cent of the land area. Politically, Canada was until recently divided into ten provinces that cross the southern half of Canada and two territories in the north. From east to west, the provinces are Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia, and the two territories were Northwest Territories and Yukon. On April 1, 1999, the eastern half of the mainland of the Northwest Territory, and most of the Arctic Islands, was made into the new territory of Nunavut. Two life zones dominate Canada's landscape. The boreal forest, or Taiga Zone, that stretches from Newfoundland, the northern edge of the Great Plains, and the Rocky Mountain foothills northward to treeline, occupies fully 50 per cent of Canada's land mass or five million square kilometres; the Tundra Zone that stretches across northern Canada north of treeline, occupies another 25 per cent or 2.5 million square kilometres. These two life zones are the most sparsely populated parts of Canada, and have few roads to provide access for survey work on butterflies; the spotty distribution of butterflies on the maps for these areas reflects this paucity of available data.

It is composed of ten provinces and three territories. It is bounded on the western edge by the Pacific Ocean, on the northern edge by the Arctic Ocean, on the eastern edge by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the southern edge by the United States of America (USA) . The edge running between countries is called a "border". In Canada, the country of the United States of America (U.S.A.) is either called "the States" (as in "We're going to the States for the weekend") or "the U.S." (as in "There's no public health care in the U.S."). If you want to enrage a Canadian then go ahead and refer to the States as "America". After all, Canada is in North America and so is Mexico A popular symbol of Canada is the mountie. A mountie is a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (R.C.M.P.). Their fancy dress uniform is brilliant red as illustrated in the photo taken on Parliament Hill, Ottawa on Canada Day. Canada Day is July 1st and is Canada's birthday. It used to be called Dominion Day.

http://www.huskydog.com/cahill/home1.html
On April 1st, 1999, the map of Canada changed for the first time in 50 years with the creation of Nunavut Territory. The Northwest Territories was split and approximately 2 million square kilometers of the central and eastern arctic became 'Nunavut'. Significant Events Leading to Formation of Nunavut Territory General Information Nunavut, meaning “our land” in Inuktitut, became Canada’s newest territory on April 1, 1999. The map of Canada now recognizes 10 provinces and three territories (Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut). See Map of Nunavut Why did Canada establish a new territory? Why go through all the expense and bother of dividing the Northwest territories? ...well for two reasons. Since the 1950’s the Government of Canada was trying to find a way to split the NWT, to make it smaller and more manageable since that territory represented 1/3 of all Canada. The Inuit entered the picture in 1976 with a proposal that the Inuit people of the eastern Arctic establish a territory and government that respected their unique culture and traditions. After 25 years of plebiscites, negotiations and logistics, Nunavut was born. Official Flag and Symbols of Nunavut

Changes in Manitoba Education
In a recent Cabinet shuffle, Manitoba Premier Gary Doer announced the appointment of Ron Lemieux as the new Minister of Education and Youth on September 25, 2002. Lemieux replaces Drew Caldwell who held the post since the last provincial election in 1999. The Government of Manitoba passed the Public Schools Modernization Act in July 2002. The major change was the reduction in the number of school divisions in the province from 54 to 37 divisions. The minister stated that "By reducing the number of school divisions, we have an opportunity to reduce administrative duplication and costs at the school division level and to focus those resources into the classroom for the benefit of our children." The Premier has also announced that classes in Manitoba will no longer begin before the Labour Day weekend, which has been a sore point for families, business, students and teachers for a number of years. The Premier did not indicate how this would affect the starting date for teachers nor what impact this would have on the length of the Manitoba school year, currently the longest in Canada at 200 days. Annual Fall Special Area Group Conferences
Special area groups, including the Manitoba Social Science Teachers Association, held their annual professional development workshops on October 25, 2002. The sessions included a variety of geography workshops ranging from climate change to geographic information systems and the Great Canadian Geography Challenge. His Excellency, John Ralston Saul was the keynote speaker.
