"Linux Gazette... making Linux just a little more fun!
Spreading the OO Fun (Series Introduction) By Jason Steffler
    Abstract
When I wrote the first Making Smalltalk with the Penguin article back in March of 2000 [LL] , my target audience was experienced programmers who didn't have much exposure to OO
The target audience for this series are people new to OO or new to programming altogether. The intent is to not only introduce OO programming, but to also spread the fun of Smalltalking. Why do this format/effort when there's lots of good tutorials out there ? Two reasons really: 1) Tutorials are great, but can be static and dated pretty quickly. 2) An ongoing series tends to be more engaging and digestible.
To help address the second reason above, my intent is to keep the articles concise so they can be digested in under an hour . Hopefully, as newbies follow along, they can refer back to the original article and make more sense of it. I plan on having a touch of advanced stuff once in a while to add flavour and as before, the articles are going to be written for read-along or code-along people.
Something new I'm going to try is to make the ongoing series viewable in a contiguous fashion and downloadable in one chunk for people who want to browse the series locally. To do this, click on TOC grapic to right. The articles are going to have 2 sets of links: one set for www links, another set for local links, indicated as:

We have a company profile with our bios and contact information online. We also have a sampling of papers, talks and position statements we've written over the years and some new pages composed just for the web. We are proud to host and edit the Portland Pattern Repository which is an online journal for patterns about programs and the de facto home of the extreme programming discipline. We provide space and assistance to a few worthwhile projects and are sometimes confused with others. Address questions or comments to ward@c2.com

Essentials of the Java Programming Language, Part 2
    Lesson 8: Object-Oriented Programming
    CONTENTS
You have probably heard a lot of talk about object-oriented programming. And, if the Java programming language is your first experience with an object-oriented language, you are probably wondering what all the talk is about. You already know a little about object-oriented programming because after working the example programs in Java Programming Language Basics, Part 1 and Part 2 , you are somewhat familiar with the object-oriented concepts of class, object, instance, and inheritance plus the access levels public and private . But mostly, you have been doing object-oriented programming without really thinking about it. And that is one of the great things about the Java programming language. It is inherently object oriented. To help you gain a deeper understanding of object-oriented programming and its benefits, this lesson presents a very brief overview of object-oriented concepts and terminology as they relate to some of the example code presented in this tutorial.
    Object-Oriented Programming Defined
Object-oriented programming is a method of programming based on a hierarchy of classes, and well-defined and cooperating objects.

Short essay by Erlang programmer critiques objectoriented programming from the perspective of functional programming, mostly.
    http://www.bluetail.com/~joe/vol1/v1_oo.html
Why OO Sucks When I was first introduced to the idea of OOP I was skeptical but didn't know why - it just felt "wrong". After its introduction OOP became very popular (I will explain why later) and criticising OOP was rather like "swearing in church". OOness became something that every respectable language just had to have. As Erlang became popular we were often asked "Is Erlang OO" - well, of course the true answer was "No of course not" - but we didn't to say this out loud - so we invented a serious of ingenious ways of answering the question that were designed to give the impression that Erlang was (sort of) OO (If you waved your hands a lot) but not really (If you listened to what we actually said, and read the small print carefully At this point I am reminded of the keynote speech of the then boss of IBM in France who addressed the audience at the 7th IEEE Logic programming conference in Paris. IBM prolog had added a lot of OO extensions, when asked why he replied: Our customers wanted OO prolog so we made OO prolog I remember thinking "how simple, no qualms of conscience, no soul-searching, no asking "Is this the right thing to do" ...

November 7, 2002 Understanding the Hows, Whens, and Whys of Object-Oriented Programming: O'Reilly Releases "Object-Oriented Programming with Visual Basic .NET" Sebastopol, CAOne of the most significant developments in Visual Basic .NET is a feature that developers have been demanding for years: full support for object-oriented programming. Now that VB.NET has facilitated object-oriented programming, developers are making a new discoverythat there is a difference between using these tools and using them well. In his new book, Object-Oriented Programming with Visual Basic .NET (O'Reilly, US $34.95), author J.P. Hamilton brings a fresh perspective to object-oriented programming by focusing on writing sound code and object-oriented design. Hamilton shows developers how to take advantage of VB.NET's new features to create and maintain scalable .NET components and applications. "I have tried to go above and beyond the standard OOP treatment in other books," explains Hamilton. "For instance, I want readers to know that 'how' means little to me. Anyone can read the docs. Knowing the 'when' and the 'why' are what makes good programmers. And that is what I've tried to convey."

    G. Sawitzki OBJECT-ORIENTED PROGRAMMING IN OBERON-2
    ABSTRACT

Oberon-2 is a refined version of Oberon developed at ETH. It introduces type-bound procedures, read-only export of data, and open array variables. The For statement is reintroduced. This paper concentrates on type-bound procedures which make Oberon-2 an object-oriented language with dynamically-bound messages and strong type checking at compile time. Messages can also be sent as data packets (extensible records) that are passed to a handler procedure and are interpreted at run time. This is as flexible as the Smalltalk message dispatching mechanism. Objects carry type information at run time which allows dynamic binding of messages, run time type tests, and the implementation of persistent objects. Oberon-2 is available on various machines.
