Proliant Webserver IDL's Object-Oriented Programming Used to Speed Electron Spectroscopy Experiments Application developers at the research laboratory ELETTRA, in Trieste, Italy are using IDL's object-oriented programming to reduce cost and wasted time in experiments conducted with ELETTRA's Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) microscopy beamline. The ESCA beamline is part of ELETTRA's third-generation synchrotron, which generates extremely bright light that is used in several types of experiments. With IDL, developers and researchers have at hand a complete, easily modified, custom data acquisition and processing environment. ELETTRA's ESCA microscopy beamline is used by approximately 10 groups of visiting scientists during a year, although almost 100 groups apply for access. The scientists come from universities, national laboratories and industries all over the world to conduct experiments in material science, biological research and surface studies. Because of the high demand for access to the beamline, conducting experiments efficiently is critical. Different requirements accompany each experiment, which is why the ability to easily customize the process is critical. Furthermore, researchers continually want more advanced and more complex analysis, often in heterogeneous computer environments. "The dream of the experimental scientist is to handle all of these varying requirements through a familiar, graphical user interface on a workstation," says Luca Gregoratti, a research assistant at ELETTRA.

Member info Bio User since: Last login: Articles written: Average rating: Total ratings: Most people are not aware of the fact that Perl has support for object-oriented programming. If you've used another object-oriented programming language such as Java or C++ or been exposed to object-orientation then object oriented programming in Perl is nothing like that. To do real useful object-oriented programming in Perl you only need to use three simple rules as put forth by Larry Wall in Object Oriented Perl. Object oriented programmers are familiar with the concept of object and classes but I will review that here quickly. An object is a thing that provides access to or modification of data. A class is description of the attributes of a particular kind of object and the manner in which those objects can be accessed and modified. A method is a means by which an object's data is accessed or modified. An object is an instance of a class.

Object-Oriented Programming Concepts: A Primer
You've heard it a lot in the past several years. Everybody is saying it. What is all the fuss about objects and object-oriented technology? Is it real? Or is it hype? Well, the truth isit's a little bit of both. Object-oriented technology does, in fact, provide many benefits to software developers and their products. However, historically a lot of hype has surrounded this technology causing confusion in both managers and programmers alike. Many companies fell victim to this hardship (or took advantage of it) and claimed that their software products were object-oriented when, in fact, they weren't. These false claims confused consumers, causing widespread misinformation and mistrust of object-oriented technology. However, in spite of overuse and misuse of the term object-oriented, the computer industry is now beginning to overcome the hype. Understanding is growing about this technology and its benefits. This lesson slashes through the hype and explains the key concepts behind object-oriented programming, design, and development.
What Is an Object?

April 2001 This timeline explores some of the key events of object-oriented programming and components in the last 50 years in the greater context of general computing history. This timeline explores some of the key events of components and object-oriented programming in the last 50 years. We could have gone back further to John von Neumann's 1946 proposals that changed computer architecture forever, or perhaps further back to ENIAC, Babbage or even Pascal. However, we decided to begin in 1951 since the birth of the widely publicized UNIVAC seems to spark the commercial engine that drives the modern pursuit of object-oriented programming and development. This commercial revolution of computers, helped along the way a decade later by IBM's 1400 series in 1961, built the momentum for developing programming languages that could encapsulate object-oriented concepts. Besides, starting this timeline in 1951 makes for a nice round number of years for us to cover in this edition. Future versions will probably cover much more!

Apr: Domain Logic and SQL
Over the last couple of decades we've seen a growing gap between database-oriented software developers and in-memory application software developers. This leads to many disputes about how to use database features such as SQL and stored procedures. In this article I look at the question of whether to place business logic in SQL queries or in-memory code, considering primarily performance and maintainability based on an example of a simple, but rich SQL query.

Welcome and Introductory Message
Welcome to the Oregon State University course in Object-Oriented Programming. This course is offered in two formats: a conventional in-class lecture format, and an on-line distance education format. As much as possible, the two courses are kept identical, and maintain the same schedule and the same format. The distance students participate in the same discussions as the in-class students and do the same homework.
