Natural Law The term 'natural law' is ambiguous. It refers to a type of moral theory, as well as to a type of legal theory, despite the fact that the core claims of the two kinds of theory are logically independent. According to natural law ethical theory, the moral standards that govern human behavior are, in some sense, objectively derived from the nature of human beings. According to natural law legal theory, the authority of at least some legal standards necessarily derives, at least in part, from considerations having to do with the moral merit of those standards. There are a number of different kinds of natural law theories of law, differing from each other with respect to the role that morality plays in determining the authority of legal norms.
Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to that part of this article)
    • I. Two Kinds of Natural Law Theory II. Conceptual Naturalism
      I. Two Kinds of Natural Law Theory The second thesis constituting the core of natural law moral theory is the claim that standards of morality are in some sense derived from, or entailed by, the nature of the world and the nature of human beings. St. Thomas Aquinas, for example, identifies the rational nature of human beings as that which defines moral law: "the rule and measure of human acts is the reason, which is the first principle of human acts" (Aquinas, ST I-II, Q.90, A.I). On this common view, since human beings are by nature rational beings, it is morally appropriate that they should behave in a way that conforms to their rational nature. Thus, Aquinas derives the moral law from the nature of human beings (thus, "natural law").

Ayn Rand (1905-1982), a best-selling novelist and world-renowned philosopher, deductively developed a unique philosophical system called Objectivism which has affected many lives over the last half century. This article offers an introduction to her systematic vision by presenting her essential ideas in a logical, accessible manner. This should contribute toward the appreciation of Rand's profoundly original philosophical system. The specific purpose of this paper is to introduce, logically rearrange, and clarify through rewording the ideas scattered throughout her essays, lectures, and novels, especially Atlas Shrugged (1957), her masterwork of logic that most completely expounds her exhaustive, fully-integrated, philosophy. Written from the viewpoint of a generalist in economics, philosophy, and the social sciences, this paper is meant to provide a background for readers who wish to study specialized aspects of Rand's philosophy in greater detail.
    The Essence of Objectivism
A is A: Deriving the "Ought" from the "Is"

Rand's defense of the above positions begins with the premise that existence exists – A is A. Her philosophy, Objectivism, contends that the universe has existed eternally and repudiates the idea of its creation by a rational, omnipotent God.

List of Philosophical Papers A philosophy based on the metaphysical premise of the Primacy of Existence, and the epistemological premise of the supremacy of reason, is generally categorized as being Objective (as opposed to Subjective or Intrinsicist The first philosopher to use fundamentally objective premises in the creation of a philosophical system was Aristotle , whose greatest achievement was his immortal formulation of the Law of Identity in the statement "A is A," his codification of logic in the Organon, and his implicit and explicit rejection of the subjectivism and intrinsicism inherent in Platonic thought. Indeed, some have gone so far as to say that every major dispute in philosophy and ideology since ancient times can be characterized in terms of the conflict between the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato The most well known Objectivist philosopher of the modern era (who coined the word "Objectivism" itself to describe the philosophical position she formalized) was Ayn Rand (nee Alice Rosenbaum), a Russian émigré to the United States who died in 1982. Rand was controversial figure (to say the least) who got her start in philosophy by proxy through her pursuit of writing great literature. Her most famous works, Anthem, We The Living, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged, progressively developed her philosophical ideas through the medium of fiction. Following the release of Atlas Shrugged (still ranked by the Library of Congress as second in importance and popularity only to the Bible) Rand devoted the rest of her life to codifying Objectivist philosophy in a number of non-fiction writings, the most significant of which are: Philosophy: Who Needs It, Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, The Virtue of Selfishness, Capitalism: the Unknown Ideal, The Romantic Manifesto, and The New Left: the Anti-Industrial Revolution.

Finding Philosophy: The Case for Moral Objectivism
Morals are a corollary to intelligent life; they exist to guide our actions. Etiquette, laws and religion are also guides but on different levels. Many people base their entire system of ethics solely on their religion. Right is defined as whatever God or the gods want. When other people base their moral code on something else, they are often called immoral and quite frequently condemned to Hell. Christianity, the most popular religion, claims less than a third of the world's population as its followers and many of them are Christian in name only. If morality exists to guide our actions, it must be universal. Since there is no universal religion, morality must be defined by secular means. Moreover, some of the most resolute Atheists are profound philosophers who carefully devise moral systems. A deity can not dictate morality if there is to be an objective morality ... and there is. Subjectivist ethics hold that morality varies by the individual or group and that there are no objectively valid (universal) moral principles. Subjectivism comes in two flavors: individual and cultural. In the former, morality is whatever you believe it to be. As long as you do not violate your own moral code, which you create and may change at will, you have done no wrong. Hitler was morally justified in murdering the Jews as long as he felt so.
