For extra credit I was asked to research the new organism that was discovered on the bottom of the ocean that is supposedly using this sulfur as it's food. I am very shady on the subject and would greatly appreciate it if you could give me some info or some references... A. This is quite a complex subject and since I didn't,t know how old you were, I started with some basics. I hope this helps with your research. The animals you have been asked to research live in a very unique environment - the deep sea floor around hydrothermal vents (also called hot vents). At hydrothermal vents water bubbles out of the molten hot center of the Earth at incredible temperatures (as high as 350C!). This superheated water has many substances dissolved in it including hydrogen sulfide, metallic sulfides and other minerals. As this hot water hits the cold ocean water many of the minerals precipitate out of solution making incredible chimneys (called black smokers).

Creating unique, life changing experiences that help individuals that help individuals enjoy productive lives and successful futures As a child growing up, one of the greatest positive influences on me that impacted my current direction and involvement in marine issues was my dad who is a teacher. As I listened to his stories and followed his examples, they began to shape my ideas and beliefs. These experiences have lead me on a path to study marine science issues and their impact on our world. My earliest memories of marine science experiences began when I was very young. My dad and I spent many days snorkeling on the various coral reefs in the South Florida area. He would explain the fragile ecosystem to me as well as the need to keep the reefs safe from pollution. I also participated in activities such as beach clean ups, water quality testing and listening to my dad teach others about marine life. In the beginning of first grade, when I was six years old, my parents enrolled me in scouting. I followed this path of service to my community with a special interest in any activities and opportunities that involved the ocean. I reached the level of “Life Scout” and was an active member of the “Order of the Arrow”. This involvement taught me a lot about conservation. I learned even more about how important our oceans are to life and the general health of our Earth.

Project Overview: While not as endless as the universe, the ocean is huge. As a teacher, you can approach studying the ocean in many different ways: You can explore the geological processes at play in the ocean, as well as the tremendous influence that the ocean exerts on our climate and on life on Earth in general. You can also discuss the different environments within the ocean. Or, you can go back in geological time and talk about how life evolved in the ocean, and what clues the ocean offers to how life might exist on other planets. "Planet Ocean" introduces your students to the concept that 99 percent of all living space on this planet is within the ocean. Students will learn about diverse and complex kinds of animals that live in the ocean and the adaptations they have made to their environment. The animals featured each live in a different part of the ocean: blue whales live in the open ocean; barracudas live in coral reefs; and tubeworms live nearly a mile and a half under the sea in a dark and extreme environment. Finally, students will learn about food chains and the tactics used by predators and prey to stay alive in the watery world.

between Malaysia and Australia. It occupies a total area of 1,919,400 sq km of which 1,826,440 sq km is on land. The country has a 2,602 km land boundary (1,782 km with Malaysia and 820 km with Papua New Guinea) and 54,716 km of coastline. It has a strategic location along major sea lanes from Indian Ocean to Pacific Ocean. Indonesia has a tropical climate - hot and humid, but more moderate in highlands. The terrain is mostly coastal lowlands while larger islands have interior mountains. Natural resources include petroleum, tin, natural gas, nickel, timber, bauxite, copper, fertile soils, coal, gold and silver. Indonesia has occasional floods, severe droughts, tsunamis and deforestation.

    Europa Has Right Stuff
Mountain View, CA - Compelling evidence for a liquid water ocean beneath its icy crust makes Jupiter's moon Europa an attractive target for scientists seeking life in distant regions of our solar system. Recent work by Dr. Elisabetta Pierazzo, currently at the Planetary Science Institute, and Dr. Christopher Chyba of the SETI Institute, sheds light on the question of whether enough "biogenic elements," the raw ingredients for life, including carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus, could be present to support Europan life. Because Europa's formation conditions are uncertain, scientists do not know the exact composition of the moon's ocean and overlying ice. Some models suggest a Europa depleted of life-essential carbon and other important biogenic chemicals at birth. Pierazzo and Chyba explored comets as an alternate source for biogenic materials, applying complex modeling methods to set the lower limits for a Europan inventory. In the May edition of the journal Icarus, Pierazzo and Chyba present a paper that concludes the Europan inventory to be "substantial."
