Carolina Coastal Science
http://www.ncsu.edu/coast

Carolina Coastal Science is an innovative, inquiry-based, science resource that utilizes the interactive technologies of the World Wide Web to explore science in coastal Carolina. Carolina Coastal Science has been created based on the goals stated in the National Science Education Standards. While this web site has been designed specifically for an Environmental Science component of a primary and secondary science curricula, it may be used in different curriculum areas. Teachers and students can use this web site independently or as a class using a number of different teaching strategies including open-ended inquiries, guided inquiries, independent research, and cooperative group learning. Carolina Coastal Science contains an interactive photojournal that students can use to construct their own set of inquiry questions to explore; an inquiry simulation in which students investigate the issues concerning the fate of the Shell Island Resort and then debate the future of this and other oceanfront structures threatened by coastal erosion; a section of "Inquiry Images" which can be used as whole class guided inquiry activities; and a Coastal Research Technology section that students can use to identify the scientific instruments used by oceanographers and coastal geologists to collect data. An educators guide is provided with a variety of teaching suggestions to incorporate this site into primary and secondary school classrooms.

Introduction
Taken from 1999-2000 Biennial Report
As the individual reports illustrate, the Physical Oceanography Group continues to maintain a productive balance between basic and targeted research. At Dalhousie, as elsewhere, this balance requires active participation in large, collaborative programs as well as in smaller, more individual, projects. The large programs such as CLIVAR and GLOBEC provide important exposure at the national and international level in addition to providing a major source of funding for summer and Co-op students, research assistants and postdoctoral fellows. Additional support for infrastructure has been through the Canada Foundation for Innovation , providing significant awards for new faculty as well as major projects. Notable was the award from CFI in support of the infrastructure for the Centre for Marine Environmental Prediction (CMEP) . This brings together both physical oceanographers and colleagues from the other disciplines to deploy ocean observing systems, the first being planned for Lunenburg Bay, Nova Scotia. The aim is to combine long term measurements, numerical models, and data assimilation techniques to analyse, and predict, the behaviour of the ocean on a whole suite of timescales, which include real time estimates of the current state of the ocean environment (nowcasts) and predictions of future state of the ocean analogous to the weather and climate predictions that are made for the atmosphere. This project is one facet of the continuing evolution of a major modeling component in the Department. This is focused by the research activities of Richard Greatbatch, Jinyu Sheng, and Keith Thompson working in conjunction with our Adjunct Professors, Hal Ritchie (AEPRI/

REPORT OF THE MEETING OF THE USER WORKING GROUP FOR THE NASA GLOBAL CHANGE MASTER DIRECTORY The User Working Group (UWG) of the NASA Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) met on February 5-6, 1998 at the NASA/GSFC Global Change Data Center. The UWG reviewed the continued progress of the GCMD activity since its last meeting of March 4-5, 1997. The UWG commends the GCMD Project Manager, Lola Olsen, and the GCMD project staff for their responsiveness to previous recommendations of the UWG and for their continued record of exceptional accomplishments. Overall, the UWG finds the GCMD activity in outstanding condition. During 1997, the GCMD's user community continued to grow, the DIF population was significantly expanded, the outreach efforts were exceptional, and innovative GCMD software techniques were implemented. In recognition of ongoing leadership, the GCMD project received a NASA Group Achievement Award during 1997, while the GCMD WWW site was featured by MSNBC and more recently in Science magazine. The GCMD project management is sound, providing effective ongoing leadership to a capable and dedicated professional support staff. The UWG also wants to acknowledge the contributions of Greg Hunolt, Code 505, for his long-term program support of the GCMD. His vision in helping to establish the GCMD in 1994, and then his efforts to provide sustained programmatic leadership were key factors that have contributed to the evolution of the GCMD to its current level of excellence.

Pilskaln University of Maine, Orono, ME 04469 Vernon S. Asper University of Southern Mississippi Stennis Space Center, MS 39529 During the 1998-99 austral summer, a field-based Southern Ocean research program was initiated through a collaborative agreement between the United States agencies of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Science Foundation, and the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration (Beijing), the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) of China, and the Chinese Polar Research Institute (Shanghai). The primary scientific objectives of the collaboration are to measure the production and export (or flux) of particulate organic matter in the Indian Ocean Sector of the Southern Ocean, specifically within the region of Prydz Bay ( figure 1 ). Such measurements are necessary to quantify the amount of atmospheric carbon that is removed to the interior ocean via biological processes, thus representing a potentially significant factor involved in global carbon cycling budgets. The present project is a first-time field collaboration between the United States and the Chinese to study carbon production and export dynamics in the Southern Ocean. The Chinese polar research vessel the Xue Long ("Snow Dragon", 167 m length) has completed annual resupply cruises from Shanghai to the Chinese Zhongshan Station in Prydz Bay beginning in 1989 (

THE PALEOGEOGRAPHIC ATLAS PROJECT IN 2002
    Introduction
The Paleogeographic Atlas Project was begun at the University of Chicago in 1975 with the help of seed money from the Shell Development Company, and since that time has received substantial support from oil companies. Our objective has been to apply the plate tectonics paradigm to the reconstruction of the geological past in all its aspects, including sea-floor spreading, paleomagnetism, tectonics, topography, bathymetry, climate, oceanography, phytogeography and zoogeography. Our team has made primary contributions to most of these fields, but in general our work derives from the worldwide geological literature and has involved the compilation of data from some 28,000 catalogued references . Our approach is distinguished by the recognition that all of the above fields provide useful constraints for paleogeographic mapping, but also that a level of expertise is required in each field to make proper interpretations. Accordingly, our team includes tectonicists, sedimentologists, paleobotanists, invertebrate paleontologists, and climate modelers.
