I have endeavored to understand the nature of cities, urban life, and the relationship between cities and the natural environment, primarily from an historical point of view. I am interested particularly in the processes responsible for changes in the urban landscape, and the consequences of those changes for human beings and the environment. Three themes tie together my research: the study of urban infrastructure, public health, and environmental justice. More... PUBLICATIONS Boone, Christopher G. Biodiversity in Our Cities
by T. Davis Sydnor From City Trees, The Journal of The Society of Municipal Arborists
Vol 34, Number 1
January/February 1998 The loss of the American elm during the first half of this century has underscored the potentially disastrous results of having a monoculture in our cities. Academicians, urban foresters, and nurserymen acknowledge the need for biodiversity. In Akron and University Heights, Ohio, the arborists noted that their city inventories contain 58% and 45% respectively plants in the genus Acer . This is in contrast with the 20 percent suggested by a commonly used guideline governing biological diversity. The 10-20-30 rule suggests that no more than 30% of the trees be of the same family, 20% of the trees be of the same genera, and 10% of the trees be of the same species. Although we have been concerned about biodiversity for many years, the concept has been elusive and difficult to put into practice. Problems with increasing diversity are found at every step in the process. Many useful species and seed sources are not known either to the tree producer or the urban forester. Assets and liabilities of certain tree species to cities may not be known. Demand counts in the nurseries for uncommon or new species is poor. Few urban foresters are familiar with the attributes of less commonly known species. Therefore, they do not request them from suppliers. Production techniques for rare plants may not be known or may be more costly than for commonly grown trees. Production cycles may be longer for unusual plants. Many nurseries find unusual plants do not sell. Little or no incentive exists for marketing plants that are not protected by patents or trademarks.

The Mid-America Chinese Resource Guide (http://lark.cc.ukans.edu/~eastasia/calamwrg/Contents.html) is an Internet project of the Midwest Chinese American Librarians Association which began in October 1997. The goal of this project is to create an online reference resource to include all China related information from the Midwest area including: Illinois , Indiana, Iowa, Kansas , Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The project is based on the Midwest Chinese American Librarians Association's 1995 printed publication of Midwest Area Chinese American Resources Guide The Guide is intended for people who desire China related information from a Midwest State or region, and for people who desire to study Chinese history, language, and culture from worldwide resources. The Guide is intended to gather existing information in a systematic way to promote better usage of resources in the Midwest. It will promote better understanding of Chinese culture through links to collective activities, programs and resources. It will link resources on learning about China in each state from K-12 through the university level, and with private organizations. Links to China scholars, specialists, teacher resources on teaching about China, Chinese language schools, distant learning, interactive programs for learning about China and Chinese language, and study abroad programs in China and Taiwan will be provided.
