Peterson and his co-authors from The Urban Institute (1992) emphasized that the crises facing our nation's urban communities will be addressed successfully only through strong leadership at all levels of the community. The need and demand for expanded Cooperative Extension educational programs in urban communities continues to grow. However, as Extension operating budgets hold steady or even decrease, more volunteers will be needed to assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating urban Extension educational programs. According to the Strategic Framework for the National Cooperative Extension System (ECOP, CSREES 1995): Extension's history is strongly identified with farming and rural communities. Some legislators and other community leaders have recognized Extension's success in rural America and are now insisting that Extension's expertise and methods also focus on critical issues in metropolitan districts. Extension must find ways to emphasize rural-metropolitan interdependence and serve audiences in both settings (pp. 8-9).

  • Federal Domestic Preparedness Program (DPP)
This program has two names associated with it - the Nunn-Lugar program, or the Nunn-Lugar-Domenici program. The program began with the Department of Defense (DOD) and later picked up by the Department of Justice (DOJ) identifying the 120 most populous cities in the United States and concentrating resources to make sure those cities began preparations in the event of a terrorist attack. In Ohio, six cities are designated "Nunn-Lugar cities." These cities are Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo. These metropolitan areas represent 43 percent of Ohio’s population. All six cities have completed the required training and most of the exercises. Once completed, the cities are given funding for equipment to support the anti-terrorism efforts in their area.

The USGS provides maps, reports, and information to help others meet their needs to manage, develop, and protect America's water, energy, mineral, and land resources. We help find natural resources needed to build tomorrow, and supply scientific understanding needed to help minimize or mitigate the effects of natural hazards and environmental damage caused by human activities. The results of our efforts touch the daily lives of almost every American.
Index of Subjects
Much of Ohio's social and economic development has been and continues to be determined by its geologic and water resources. The effects of geologic processes and human activities-floods and droughts, soil erosion and landslides, industry, agriculture, and urbanization-on Ohio's natural resources are important to understand because these processes and activities, to a large degree, affect the health, safety, and well-being of the people; the economy; and the environment of the State. For more than 100 years, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been and continues to be involved in studies that concern the geology, water resources, and physical features of Ohio. This long-term effort of data collection, data interpretation, and mapping provides natural-resources managers and policymakers with essential earth science information needed to make decisions about Ohio's resources.
