Introduction Reports and Articles Links Information about Grants Introduction As in many other cities, Dayton, Ohio faces its share of educational challenges. Far too few students, particularly low-income and minority students, are graduating from high school, and many of those who do are not prepared for college or for today's jobs. Dayton parents and community members are hungry for education reform and for new school options. A recent survey ( "Dayton Education in 2001: The Views of Citizens and Parents" ) published by this foundation shows that Dayton private and charter school parents are far more satisfied than public school parents with the academic program, discipline, safety, and teacher quality at their child's school. More than half of private school parents give their child's school an "A" grade, as do 42% of charter parents, but just 23% of public school parents award this top mark to their child's school. According to the survey, two-thirds of Daytonians favor maintaining and/or expanding charter schools. A clear majority (including three-quarters of public school parents) favor government-funded vouchers. More than four out of five believe that children should be required to meet higher academic standards in order to be promoted or to graduate.
