"Ohio Libraries: Charting the Information Future" is a Task Force of the Ohio Library Community that has been working on studying the future of libraries in Ohio.
The Task Forces were appointed last spring as part of the Ohio Library Council, Ohio's state library association.
The Futures Initiative is the first comprehensive review of the future of public library service to be undertaken by any library association.
Tremendous research, discussion, and preparation went into the sixty-page document that is being reviewed by Ohio's library community.
Some of the proposals for the future are new; some are not. They challenge us to think about the future of Ohio's libraries.
In March 2003, the Futures Initiative Committee will issue a final report to spark a new plan for public library service in Ohio.
The work was divided into seven task forces, each dealing with a specific issue.

This is a challenging budget time for the State of Ohio and its agencies. The current economic downturn has resulted in reduced revenues for Ohio's agencies and institutions.
Ohio's public libraries feel a responsibility to shoulder a fair share of the budget reductions during this economic crisis.
Ohio's 250 public library districts are funded by 5.7 percent of the personal income tax, allowing for an automatic adjustment to the economy.
Because revenues from that tax are down, public libraries received $ 40 million dollars less in 2002 than the previous year.
Libraries adjusted to the 8.5 percent reduction last year in a variety of ways.
Our library system reduced expenditures by $ 185,000 last year to address the budget reduction.
We were fortunate to have received the Bill and Melinda Gates Grant and the OCCCN Grant, which replaced all of the computers, reducing technology costs.
Our library system controlled its health insurance costs in 2002 by joining a statewide plan, which capped and reduced premiums.

Ohio Libraries Keep Censorware Discretion
Story location: http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,3994,00.html 06:11 PM May. 20, 1997 PT A group of heartland parents concerned that their children might see sexually explicit material while Web surfing in Ohio public libraries were hoping Tuesday to get some tight virtual shutters bolted onto library Net terminals. But with state Finance Committee action Tuesday, the terminals were still shutter-free as a bill that would have required the state's 245 public libraries to install blocking software was amended to allow local boards to create their own software policies. "Apart from the issue of local control, our main concern was the effectiveness of the technology," said Mike Mooney, aide to state Senator Roy Ray, the Republican chairman of the panel that passed the bill. The bill's original provisions , passed in March, stipulated that the Ohio Public Library Information Network create guidelines including the "use of technological systems to select or block, and the requirement that public libraries obtain Internet access exclusively through the OPLIN" by mid-August.

USABILITY TEST FOR THE INFORMATION LITERACY TUTORIAL
The Five Colleges of Ohio Information Literacy Committee members, along with additional colleagues from all five colleges, have been working together to design a Web-based Information Literacy Tutorial. Part of the process is to do some usability testing both Summer and Fall 2000. The summer testing is to help us with some design issues before we pilot test the tutorial during the Fall. The fall testing is to help us determine whether or not some redesigning of the Web site is necessary after our Fall pilot of the tutorial. Those who help with the Summer 2000 testing under the guidance of a test administrator will be paid for their efforts. We would, however, appreciate greatly any amount of feedback we can get on the tutorial, so if you choose to take the tutorial on your own, please print out the form, answer the questions that are asked, and send it to the contact on your individual campus.

Drew Carey Brings $614K to Ohio Libraries
BreakingNews > News The Ohio Library Foundation has received a total of $614,000, due to the efforts of comedian and television star Drew Carey, with three Akron-Canton-area libraries (Medina County District Library, Orrville Public Library, and Wadsworth Public Library) receiving the majority of the money. The Cleveland native donated the money over the past two years from his winnings on various game shows, in addition to $32,000 of his own money. A total of nine Ohio libraries and Kent State University (KSU) will receive a share of the money. The contribution is the largest in the foundation's history. About half of the monies have been distributed so far, with an emphasis on attracting teen readers. The grants required 25 percent matches. According to the
