The Cross Timbers RESOURCE BOOK Many Oklahomans are not familiar with the Cross Timbers as a geographic region. Historically, however, the term was well understood by travelers entering the western portions of Arkansas Territory faced with the need to traverse the entangled scrubby oak woodlands of what was later to become central Oklahoma. Geographically, the Cross Timbers acted as a buffer separating the Five Civilized Tribes of Indian Territory from the Plains Indians of the west, diverting most major trails and the early railroad routes to north and south corridors outside the region, and influencing the pre-statehood arrangement of Indian and Oklahoma territories. This resource book is designed to help you teach about the Cross Timbers regionthe largest vegetation area in Oklahoma. The Cross Timbers project and this resource guide have been funded through a grant from the National Geographic Society's Oklahoma Geography Education Fund ( www.nationalgeographic.com/education The Cross Timbers Resource book was too large to place on our web site in html format. The Mission of the Nature Conservancy
The mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.
    • The Nature Conservancy uses the best available scientific methods to identify, protect and manage elements of biodiversity and their associated habitat. Our conservation work is guided by ecoregional planning . This process identifies portfolios of functional conservation areas within that ecoregion. We will design a conservation plan that will protect viable native species within that portfolio and then monitor the site's success. The Conservancy acquires land through purchase from willing owners or through donation. The Chapter also uses conservation easements, leases, and cooperative agreements with landowners to protect land containing significant species of plants or animals. The Oklahoma Chapter was founded in 1986 . The state office is located in Tulsa, with other offices in Oklahoma City, Pawhuska, and Pontotoc.

    OKLAHOMA GEOGRAPHY

Oklahoma, one of the Great Plains states, is slightly south of the geographic center of the U.S. Most of the state is a great, rolling plain, sloping gently from northwest to southeast. Highest elevation is 4,973 feet above sea level at the Black Mesa in the northwestern corner of the Panhandle; lowest, 287 feet, is near Broken Bow in the extreme southeast. Approximately 24% of the state's total area is forested, principally the region bordering Missouri and Arkansas. Although part of the Great Plains, Oklahoma has four mountain ranges; the Ouachita in the southeast, the Ozark Plateau in the northeast, the Arbuckle in the south central part of the state, and the Wichita in the southwest. Throughout the northwest and the Panhandle are sudden outcrops of sandstone and gypsum, sharp ravines and stark hills. In the north central region are several salt flats. Largest is the Great Salt Plains, covering about 25 miles near Cherokee.
The state's major rivers are the Arkansas and the Red; the Red River forms the state's southern boundary with Texas. Other large streams, all flowing into either the Arkansas or the Red, are the Illinois, Grand (or Neosho), Verdigris, Poteau, Canadian, Cimarron, Salt Fork of the Arkansas, North Canadian (or Beaver), and the Washita. On most of the larger rivers, great lakes ranging in size from 890 acres to over 102,500 acres, have been impounded. Largest of more than 60 such reservoirs are Eufaula, Texoma, Grand (Lake O' the Cherokees), Fort Gibson, Oologah, Kerr, Pine Creek, Broken Bow, Tenkiller, Hudson, Keystone, Foss, Fort Cobb, and Great Salt Plains.

Oklahoma! Uncrowned Queens and the Oklahoma Centennial Celebration for 2007 For the past two years, Drs. Bertram and Nevergold have been working to catapult the Uncrowned Queens Project into national status and to export this historical/cultural and heritage model to states throughout the country. A few weeks ago, they were notified that the Oklahoma Capitol Complex and Centennial Commemoration Commission had placed the Uncrowned Queens Project on the Master Plan. It is the only project of its kind on the Master Plan. This designation identifies the project as an official Oklahoma Centennial Commemoration project. The Commission reports that: “The project was selected because of the strong partnership with the Oklahoma Historical Society and the Oklahoma Urban League. Further, the project has a far reaching means of bringing recognition to African American women throughout Oklahoma who have contributed to their communities and to our state. We are pleased that the project will reach out to communities of all sizes and that it will create archives that will be invaluable to students, scholars and the public.” Further, the Commission writes: “This is a statewide centennial project that will utilize web-based technology to reach any community in the state and share a part of our unique history with anyone in the world.”
