The Early Beginnings The Church of God in Oklahoma was started by Roy L. Catman in 1919. Brother Catman had held revivals in various locations in Oklahoma in 1916-1917. In 1918 he started preaching in Tishomingo. Persecution was very severe there. They literally chased him out of town. So he went to the nearby town of Ravia where he stared a revival in the Rock Creek School House about two miles out of town. The revival continued for eight weeks and in 1919 the Church of God was organized. Brother Johnny Moore a young man 27 years of age, was told by his sister, Frances, about the revival. She said “Come see what’s going on at this meeting. It’s scary.” Brother Moore went, got saved and called to preach. One night he took his wife and two children in the horse drawn buggy. Sister Moore went outside to change the baby and while she sat in the buggy, she saw a huge ball of fire come down over the building and hover over it for a few minutes, then lift back up into the sky and disappear. Inside the power was falling.

Oklahoma Historical Tour A cyclist can begin or end this tour in the charming, historical town of Guthrie, the first capital of Oklahoma and the largest single area designated on the National Register of Historic Places. Downtown Gutnrie, where almost all of the original 19th century buildings have been restored, is filled with antique shops, museums and bed and breakfast inns. Make plans to stop off at Lake Carl Blackwell on the way to Stiliwater, home of Oklahoma State University and home of the famous "jumpin little juke joint," Eskimo Joe's. Make sure to stop in for Joe's famous chili cheese fries and an even more famous tee-shirt. Stillwater also has the most extensive system of bike routes of any town in the state. Nearby Perry offers the Cherokee Strip Museum, and east on SH 64 one will find the Pawnee Bill Museum. This tour offers loops from 30 to 100 miles. There is plenty to see in nearby Oklahoma City too. OKLAHOMA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
ARCHIVES DIVISION
The Archives and Manuscripts Division consists of five departments within its structure. First and foremost is the Indian Archives. Created in 1934, the collection contains 3.5 million documents pertaining to 67 tribes who were indigenous to Oklahoma or were forcibly removed west of the Mississippi River and resettled within the borders of the state during the l9th Century. Of these records, the Five Civilized Tribes are most prominent.
The Photographic Archives contains some 630,000 black and white or color images from 1846 to the present. Subjects include Native Americans; the old west; land openings which settled the territory; depression era; and contemporary images of the state and her people.
The Oral History collection had its beginnings in 1965 with the creation of the Living Legends series. Since that time, the collection has grown to over 6,000 audio as well as 3,000 video interviews. Persons from all walks of life have related their experiences for future generations to research.
The Newspaper Department was founded in 1893. The members of the Territorial Press Association were instrumental in the development of the Historical Society. Their foresight in determining that local news was important to retain as a historical record is why the Society has one of the most complete collections of newspapers in the United States. In 1957, the Society began to microfilm the collection. Consequently, the collection contains 30,000 reels of film from 1844 to the present.

Oklahoma in the 1930's The 1930's brought Oklahoma and the nation hard times, but the clouds of the Depression and Dustbowl had a golden lining..... Farmers and other industries were devastated by the Great Depression and the low economic status was made worse by the Dustbowl. By the end of the decade in 1939, Oklahoma had passed through many changes and had been shaped by the many recovery and relief projects enacted to counteract the effects of the twin emergencies. People "made do, made over, or did without" and in retrospect they proclaim, "We had everything, but money." Dustbowl Great Depression First Person Accounts Native-Americans and African-Americans ... OKLAHOMA HISTORY Oklahoma's written history began around 1541 when Spanish explorer Coronado, ventured through this area. At that time it was home to many of the Plains Indians, such as the Osage, Kiowa, Apache, and Comanche. In 1803, Oklahoma was sold to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase- In the 1830's, the federal government forced the Five Civilized Tribes to leave their homelands. These tribes were living in the southeastern part of the U.S. Some had to walk to Oklahoma, on what is now referred to as 'The Trail of Tears'. Many men, women and children died during this forced trip into what would now be known as Indian Territory- Many Native Americans sided with the Confederate Army during the Civil War, sometimes losing their land as punishment. Others who sided with The Union Forces were considered 'Loyal" and were paid for such loyalty- After the Civil War, cowboys began their history on the Texas Plains. Texas ranchers found they had large supplies of beef with no place to sell it. The East Coast wanted beef. To meet that demand, Texas ranchers had to move their cattle to the closest railroads, which were in Kansas. The Chisholm Trail and other cattle routes were made through Oklahoma between 1866 and 1889. The ranchers realized the territory was not only closer to the railroads, but a good location for raising cattle as well. By the 1870's, white men began to demand a place in Oklahoma for their own settlement- There were still large amounts of free land available, on which white men wanted to settle. In 1879 and 1880, President Rutherford B. Hayes forbade white settlement in the territory. Still, people urged the government to open the lands. In 1885, Congress gave the President permission to begin opening the land to white people-
