Olympic Games: An Historic Proposal By: T. Campbell Introduction Task Process ... Ancient Olympic Games Event Brochure Introduction In 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks began a tradition that lasted for over 1100 years. They stopped all wars and each city-state sent their best athletes to the plain at Olympia to compete for the honor of Zeus at the Olympic Games. In 2004 A.D. the modern Olympic Games will be held in Athens, Greece. This return to the country of the Games' ancient origins has the potential to be an historic event. However, the success depends on a careful plan. Introduction Task Process Evaluation ... Resources Task Your group will be creating a proposal for the events of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The Greek government has ordered that the proposals must focus on the historical roots of the Olympic Games in ancient Greece. A successful proposal will design an Olympic Games that allows the spectators and athletes to experience the ancient tradition like no other modern Olympics has ever done.
  • Your proposal must identify the most important ancient events and include an explanation of how the historical roots of each of those events will be preserved in the modern competition.

The Olympic Games
In the ancient times, four great game festivals were held on Greek land: The Isthmians, The Nemeans, The Pythians and The Olympic Games. Part of a religious festival, the Olympic Games were held every four years at Olympia. The four year interval was called an Olympiad , and was the system upon which time in ancient Greek history was calculated. The games were so important that even wars were stopped at the time they were held. The first Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C. At first, only one race (the sprint) was run. Later, the discus and javelin throw, broad jumping and wrestling were added. The Olympic Games were held for more than 1,000 years. They were abolished by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius in 394 A.D. The Games were revived in 1896 to promote understanding and friendship among nations. The first modern games were held in Athens, Greece. Young men and women come from all over the world to compete in various sports and represent their country. They live in an Olympic Village at the site of the games. The Olympic Games are organized and governed by the International Olympic Commitee (IOC). It sets the general program, chooses the city where the games are to be held, and determines the standards of amateurism. Each participating country has a National Olympic Commitee that is responsible for arranging the participation of the nation's athletes in the games.

How the Olympic Games began
Thousands of years ago, people of ancient Greece believed the body was just as important as the mind. They participated in foot and chariot races and enjoyed boxing and wrestling.
The year 776 B.C. was the date of the first recorded results in a sports competition held during a ceremony to honour Zeus, the Greek god. The Games were then held every four years in the Valley of Olympia – and thus became known as the Olympic Games.
Since that time there has been a decline – and a rise – of the Olympic Games and spirit:
  • In 393 AD, Roman Emperor, Theodosius I orders the Games to be closed down.

The Eastern Olympic Games held in the Philippines, Manila in 1913 was the beginning of the Asian Games. The Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia and Hong Kong were the first members of the Eastern Olympic Games. It was renamed as the Far East Championship from the 2nd event until the 10th event in 1934 and was held every 2 years. The 11th event was supposed to be held in Tokyo with the new name of Eastern Championship, however, the game was cancelled because of the threat of World War II.
When World War II was over, the common idea of establishing a comprehensive sports festival for the Asian people sprang up among the leaders of the Asian countries. Sondi from India in 1947 emphasized the need to establish a sports event where young Asians can gather together to display their sports skills thus elevating the level of Asian athletes to that of Europe and the U.S. A suggestion to have a preliminary meeting for a certain kind of sports event in Asia was made to the heads of players from 13 Asian countries who were attending the 14th London Olympic Games in the U.K. The conference was attended by heads from Korea, Taiwan, India, Philippines, Myanmar and Ceylon (present Sri Lanka). An agreement to hold the 1st Asian Athletics Championship in New Delhi, India in February, 1949 and the establishment of the Asia Athletics Federation were made at the conference.

    WEIGHTLIFTING HISTORY Origin of Weightlifting:

    Weightlifting: starting with the basics
As a basic athletic activity and a natural means to measure strength and power, the lifting of weights was present in both the ancient Egyptian and Greek societies. Boosting its international importance chiefly in the 19th Century, weightlifting was among those few sports (alongside athletics, swimming, gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, shooting and cycling) which featured already on the programme of the first Modern Olympic Games, in 1896, Athens. The first World Championships in this sport, however, had been staged five years earlier: on 28th March 1891, in London, with 7 athletes representing 6 countries.
Weightlifting is thus the only sport whose history in world-wide competitions spans across three centuries: from 1891 through the 20th Century until our days, in 2001.
The power-relations have undergone major changes over the past decades. At the beginning of the century, Austria, Germany and France used to be the most successful nations. Later on, Egypt, then the United States of America reigned. In the 1950s and the following three decades the Soviet Union's weightlifters played the protagonists' role - with Bulgaria becoming a main challenger. Since the mid-'90s, however, Turkey, Greece and China have catapulted to the lead. The most recent word power in weightlifting is Greece among the men. In the women's field, China has been dominant since the very beginning, with other Asian countries emerging as strong contenders to the champion titles. On the overall, however, Europe is the most powerful continent in competitions of both genders.
