and figure skating : a shared passion for ice

When you love ice enough to make it your livelihood it´s natural to feel close to those great skaters for whom ice is life.
For their 10 th Anniversary, the Miko Masters were back to present a brand-new formula to the audience at the “Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy”, for the first time the public could appreciate a PRO-AM COMPETITION by TEAM. The Miko Masters came back with these two characteristic forces, presenting, in collaboration with the French Ice Skating Union, a new and original type of competition, never seen before in France : the 1 st Open French Figure Skating . Indeed, up to now the competition was only open to professional skaters. Whoever with the desire to follow the development of ice skating, the Miko Masters now welcome both professional and amateur skaters.

Abstracts of Most Recent Issue of Journal of Olympic History Vol. 8, No. 2 From the Trenches to the Track, and Back (by Harry Gordon). pp. 7-10. Australian Olympic historian Harry Gordon discusses the many Olympic athletes who have fought for their nation during wartime. He begins with the story of Claude Smeal, an Australian soldier who ran the 1952 marathon. Further discussion centered on several British soldiers who honored themselves both on the battlefield and the Olympic arena. Gordon ends the article by discussing the relationship of Jesse Owens and Lutz Long, which began at the 1936 Olympics, and ended with the death of Long while fighting in North Africa during World War II. The Olympic Bribery Scandal (by Bill Mallon). pp. 11-27. This long article attempts to be the most complete, and accurate, summary of the events surrounding the Olympic Scandal of 1999. The article is based on primary documentary sources, including all the reports issued in 1999 that evaluated the status of the scandal. These included the Pound Report (IOC), the Mitchell Report (USOC), the Sheridan Report (Sydney), and the Salt Lake City Board of Ethics Report (Salt Lake City 2002). After discussion of the findings of the reports, the article focuses on the attempts at reform by the IOC, including the institution of the IOC 2000 Commission, the IOC Ethics Commission, and the numerous reforms enacted by the IOC at their 1999 Session held on 11-12 December in Lausanne.

HISTORY OF SUCCESS
The Croatian handball can indeed boast of its achievements on the international scene. The staging of the European Handball Championship in the year of its fiftieth anniversary is a well-deserved reward for the Croatian handball players' contribution to the development and popularization of the game that has lately become a trade mark of Croatian sport. The brilliant performances of the Croatian female and male handball players are too ample to be listed here. Books could be written about them.
Atlanta - Always First
There is no such title in world handball that the Croatian handball wizards have not won. But each success story will start from Atlanta in 1996, when a brilliant generation won an Olympic gold medal. This has been the greatest success of the Croatian sport in the past few years, since the independence of Croatia. The generation, led by Velimir Kljaiæ, has crowned the endeavours of all previous years when the Zagreb Club was a double European champion, a bronze medal was won at the European Championship in Portugal, and a silver medal at the World Championship in Iceland where our handball players represented Croatia for the first time. The line-up from Atlanta including Mato¹eviæ, Losert, Jelèiæ, Èavar, Smajlagiæ, ©ujster, Kljaiæ, Naèinoviæ, Joviæ, Puc, Golu¾a,Perkovac, Gudelj, Saraèeviæ, Mikuliæ and Frankoviæ will be always engraved in golden letters in Croatian and international sports publications.

    Skeleton History
The women skeleton athletes have been training and racing in Lake Placid since 1987. Participation in World Cup competition did not commence until the early 1990’s. The first women’s World Championship will be held in conjunction with the men’s in February, 2000 at Igls, Austria. Currently, the women are not in a position to medal in 2002. There are only six competitive athletes in international competition, however, the USBSF has identified one promising Podium prospect. Additionally, Cathy Turner, Double Gold medallist in Speed Skating, trained for skeleton in 1997 at Lake Placid and advanced rapidly. Cathy has expressed interest in training for 2002 pending a final decision regarding the sport’s inclusion. Therefore, the USBSF will:
    a) continue to recruit potential world class athletes to the program and b) work through the Core Program to develop the identified athlete and new recruits. The USBSF will request Podium grants for women’s skeleton when those projects will likely produce an Olympic medallist.

For the third straight Olympic cycle, the USA picked a new coach to lead the team to glory. This time it was John Vargas, an assistant under Corso and a member of the 1992 Olympic Team. Unlike Corso, Vargas inherited a team of returning veterans who immediately demonstrated their capabilities by winning the FINA World Cup in Athens, Greece in 1997. "This was one of the truly great teams in US history," said assistant coach Monte Nitzkowski, when he joined the staff in 1998. "We're strong in the critical positions. We've got speed, strength, size, great outside shooting and were solid in the cage." Team USA opened the Sydney tournament in the toughest bracket, grouped with medal favorites Croatia, Yugoslavia and Hungary. Going into the Games, Vargas felt that win or lose, the early games would give the US a bit of an advantage heading into the quarterfinals. Learning from the experience in Atlanta, he said, "it all comes down to the quarter-finals." First up, the 1996 Olympic silver medallists from Croatia coasted to a 7-2 half-time lead and held on for a 10-7 win.

History of Women's Water Polo in the USA
Women's water polo was played regularly in the United States until 1926, when the Nationals were won by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. After this time, the sport was considered too rough for women, and no Nationals were held for 35 years. The Ann Arbor Swim Club, coached by Rose Mary Dawson, was instrumental in reviving the sport. Ann Arbor, later coached by John Urbanchek, 1996 U.S. Men's Olympic Swimming Assistant Coach, won the Nationals in 1961 through 1963. The goalkeeper for Ann Arbor was Micki King, later a United States Olympic diving gold medallist. Northern Virginia Aquatic Club won seven national titles from 1964-69, although on the West Coast, Santa Clara Swim Club, with Pokey Watson Richardson and Claudia Kolb Thomas, both Olympic gold medallists in swimming, took two indoor titles in 1965 and 1966. Water polo was introduced into Florida by Rob DeVust in the late 1960s, with Florida teams winning the majority of the national championships from 1971-75, although the Cincinnati Marlins won the Indoors in 1974 with a team including Deena Deardurff and Jenny Kemp, both Olympic swimmers. Anaheim, later to become FAST (Fullerton Area Swim Team), coached by Stan Sprague, the 1978 National Team coach, won the Indoor Nationals in 1975 and 1977 and the Outdoors in 1976. Sainte Foy, from Quebec, Canada, coached by Claude Lavoie, won the 1976 Indoor Nationals. Merced, coached by Flip Hassett, the 1979 National Team coach, won the 1977 Outdoors. The 1978 and 1979 Indoor Nationals were won by Long Beach. Kelly Kemp coached these fine players from 1976 to 1978.

    Drake Relays mark history
Cindy Thurmond The Hat Rack Temperatures are on the rise, and with Relays here, we could not ask for any better weather. Drake Relays are new to me, so I will not pretend to know everything or – more honestly – anything about them. I tried the excuse; "I am not from Iowa so how could I be expected to know about such an event?" However, after discovering how wide the scope of participants run, my excuses are depleted. Therefore, I plead ignorance. Well, that is until I did a little research. Nevertheless, do not be fooled into thinking that only collegiates and Olympians can participate in the Relays. The Drake Relays also offer events for high school athletes. In addition, while the number of high school boy participants is twice the number of girl participants, slowly the playing field is leveling. High school boys have participated in the Relays for 92 years, while this year marks 40 years that high school girls will participate in the events. Several events were added for the girls to compete. These include: 100- and 400-meter hurdles, shuttle hurdle relay and 4 x 800 relay. While I am not a huge sports fan, I admire and respect these athletes as they follow their dreams and are diligent in preparing for the few minutes that can lead them to victory. I am sure that they have sacrificed, not only to maintain their fitness and strength, but also their mindset and emotions. For when they break a record and exceed expectations, they instantly know that they have fulfilled a dream.
