History
The idea for a rowing race between the universities came from two friends - Charles Merival, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow schoolfriend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford. On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day, where the loser of the previous year's race challenges the opposition to a re-match. The first Boat Race took place at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire and contemporary newspapers report crowds of twenty thousand travelled to watch. The race was stopped soon after the start and, following the restart, Oxford were clear winners. The event was such a resounding success that the townspeople later decided to organise a regatta of their own which duly became Henley Royal Regatta. After the first year, the early Boat Races took place at Westminster in London, but by 1845, when Westminster had become too crowded, the Boat Race moved six miles up-stream to the then country village of Putney.

SPRINKER RECREATION CENTER
14824 South "C" Street
Tacoma, WA 98444 (253) 798-4000
HISTORY The $2.5 million Sprinker Recreation Center was dedicated on July 16, 1976 when the doors of the 74,500 square foot facility opened to the public with ceremonies and an open house. That dedication added a regulation ice arena, 4 indoor tennis courts, 5 racquetball/handball courts, 5 multi-purpose rooms for classes and activities, and a fully-equipped pottery room (which is no longer there) to the 30 acre outdoor complex that previously opened in June of 1969. Sprinker Recreation Center 1976
The outdoor facility boasts a huge variety of amenities including 8 softball fields, 1 baseball field, 6 football/soccer fields, 6 tennis courts, 4 pickleball courts, 8 horseshoe pits, and an all-weather 1/4 mile track. Spire Rock, one of the first such climbing facilities in the state, was later added. Automatic batting cages were added in 1983. Sprinker has always striven to provide the best and latest recreational opportunities for the public by hosting graduation parties, carnivals, district and state high school athletic championships, and state and regional slowpitch tournaments, to name a few. It has also been the site of Lakewood Winter Club hosted figure skating competitions featuring Olympic medallists Rosalynn Sumners and Brian Boitano. And former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Jim Zorn even participated in a skating exhibition. Sprinker provided practice ice for the W.I.L.'s Tacoma Rockets and NHL teams as well. Internationally known ice skating coach Kathy Casey was Skating Director for many years and over the years numerous other dignitaries and sports personalities have made appearances at the center.

DAYS WOMEN 01 nov - 15 nov MEN 16 nov - 30 nov The Road to Athens 2004: The World Cups
The 2003 World Cups represent the most important international competition for men and women in the pre-Olympic year. The world’s elite teams will have, as their main focus in the coming competition season, the goal of qualifying for this important tournament.
Indeed, the Road to Athens 2004 goes directly via Japan where players contest matches in cities from the northern city of Sapporo to the south in Kagoshima. The women’s tournament is played in Tokyo, Nagoya, Sapporo, Osaka, Kagoshima, Sendai and Toyama and the men’s tournament in Tokyo, Horoshima, Fukuoka, Nagano, Hamamatsu and Okayama.
A brief history of the World Cups
The first World Cup was played in Warsaw, Poland in 1965 and until 1989 it was an event that put the Olympic medallists to the test just one year after their tournament. Three out of six tournaments confirmed the Olympic result while on four other occasions the result was overturned. East Germany, 4th at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico won at home in 1969. In 1969 the USSR, silver medallists from Montreal 1976 won in Tokyo the year after, Cuba, unplaced in Seoul 1988 won in 1989 in Italy and the Italians, fifth in Barcelona in 1992 won in 1995.

Formula Windsurfing Mistral Olympics Boardsailing - An Olympic Class History by Bruce Kendall of New Zealand - dual Olympian Medal winner. Our sport is still called Boardsailing in Olympic jargon and was a demonstration sport at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles and an Olympic event at each Games since. 1984 - Los Angeles, USA 1988 - Pusan, Korea 1992 - Barcelona, Spain 1996 - Atlanta, USA 2000 - Sydney, Australia Due to the big equipment performance differences found in other windsurfing classes Olympic Class Boardsailing is possibly the most pure type of athletic sail racing in the world - a real Olympic sport. Sadly, it is and possibly always will be little understood. Like all small craft sailing classes, the best informed spectators are the competitors. It has taken twenty years of two steps forward and one back for Olympic Boardsailing to get to the level it is now. As a consequence of the Olympic Boardsailing Class's current achievements, governments are allocating a lot of funding towards growing the sport. The current Olympic Class is a great asset to the sport of windsurfing. Let's look after it and keep the current Olympic Class for at least another Olympiad.

OLYMPIC HISTORY Shooting had a friend in the highest of places when the Modern Olympic Games opened in Athens in 1896. None other, in fact, than Pierre de Coubertin, who was a pistol shooting champion for France. The first president of the International Olympic Committee introduced four pistol and two rifle events at the first modern Olympiad. The sport has featured at all bar two Games since, St Louis in 1904 and Amsterdam in 1928 not having staged shooting events. His record-breaking did not stop there, however, and over two days at the Stockholm Games of 1912 he established two more Olympic milestones which have stood the test of time. First, he became the oldest medal winner in an individual event, by taking the bronze in the Running Deer, double-shot at the age of 64 years and 256 days; then, he became the oldest ever gold medal winner when triumphant as a member of the Swedish Running Deer, single-shot team at the age of 64 years 257 days.

This surprising book has an absolute wealth of data on Olympic Judo from 1964 to 1988. The photos are first rate, with many excellent examples of dynamic Judo being shown. Each chapter covers a different Olympic year... with detailed coverage of the more interesting matches. Who was favored, and why... what the upsets were, and reasons for various rule changes down through the years. In the appendix, it gives the results of each and every match. This book is historically valuable. I think that it is out-of-print, but as it's fairly recent, you should still be able to find a copy at a low price. For those interested in the historical development of Olympic Judo, and how it changed Judo worldwide, this book would be invaluable. Get it!
