Teach IT Home Getting Started FAQ Cheat Sheets ... Professional Development Welcome to Nortel Networks Kidz Online, a powerful education tool designed to help both teachers and students with their technology needs. That sounds promising, but just a wee bit boring, right?
WRONG!
NNKOL is anything but boring - it's the full package. It has exciting shows for teens, including narrative education on KTK Live and interviews about careers in technology on Streaming Futures. It has Learning Resources (a fancy name for lesson plans) based on every video to help teachers bring fun and life into the class room. This site also has a channel called Teach IT designed to help teachers learn technology at their own pace in a relaxing and entertaining environment. Every unit we cover, from Digital Imagery to Web Page Creation, has a little something for everyone.
Did we mention that it's FREE?
How does that work?
Our Education Advisory Board has worked very hard to map out a curriculum outline of units that will be covered by the various channels here at Nortel Networks Kidz Online. Examples of units include: Utilizing the Internet, Web Page Creation, Web Design, Digital Imagery, Power Point as a Multimedia Interface and many others. A full list of currently scheduled units and corresponding videos, is up on our production schedule
Every channel covers the individual units in a unique way.

Collaboration in the Classroom and Over the Internet
written by Yvonne Marie Andres
email yvonne@globalschoolnet.org
Why Collaboration is Important
Significant global changes are rapidly occurring and political boundaries are becoming less distinct. Certain issues such as the environment, terrorism, and inflation affect all populations of all countries. Job market skills and employment requirements are changing. Communication skills are becoming essential to earning a living, yet American students are not coming to the workforce adequately prepared. The Internet offers one of the most exciting and effective ways to teach students how to both communicate and collaborate by connecting teams of students with other classrooms around the world. The creation of "telecommunities" can unite students and teach them to work cooperatively. Collaborative learning becomes even more significant when the students who are working together are from different nations with varied cultures, histories, and socio-political beliefs. Yet, little has been written about how to prepare students to work in teams over the Internet.
Students as Collaborators
Although, the best collaborative projects can be designed to have students measure, collect, evaluate, write, read, publish, simulate, hypothesize, compare, debate, examine, investigate, organize, share, and report, it's important to remember that not all students need to be doing the same thing at the same time. Ideally, the class is divided into several teams or "crews" comprised of four or five students each. The teacher assigns each crew member a job title and a responsibility according to the student's individual talent or strength.

The Food Pyramid: Three Projects That Teach Kids About Nutrition
While students load up on soft drinks, sweets, and high-fat foods, their teachers long for ways to help them understand what that kind of diet does to growing bodies. Three educators shared with Education World their latest attempts to halt the spread of junk food online projects! Students share information, compare data, and learn about foods from around the world. "We are what we eat and the habits we establish at an early age will tend to stay with us," said Don Bourdon, technology coordinator at St. Bernard's School in Saranac Lake, New York. Keeping this premise in mind, he created Fit For Life . The project is designed to increase students' awareness of the food they eat, the nutrition it provides, and the regional costs of the food. "Hopefully, through educational awareness presented in a fun-filled way for students, the benefits of a sound, nutritious diet will be imparted to [students]," Bourdon told Education World. "French fries and potato chips are not vegetable servings, although most kids will count them as such. Increased nutritional awareness is warranted."

How do I create a collaborative, Internet-based project?
by Kathy Schrock
A reader wrote that she wants to better integrate the Internet into her lessons. Rather than having her students simply use the Web for research, her goal was to create an interactive project in which kids collaborate with classrooms around the world. Such projects are highly varied, but usually involve gathering data, written information, or artwork from other schools via the Internet. As "hosts" of the project, you and your students will analyze and/or compile the submissions, and create some type of publication (e.g., an online art gallery or a weather-data map). The beginning of the school year is the perfect time to start. You can look at the topics you plan to teach and determine how such a project will fit in best. Plus, if you start now, there will be plenty of time to plan your project, announce it on the Web, collect and compile data, and reflect on how it went.
To learn how to create a collaborative, Internet-based project, let's go on a

One of the greatest benefits of using the Internet in the classroom is to provide educational opportunities for students based on their abilities and interests. For example, I can teach a basic lesson on a writing strategy and allow a student who is interested in and motivated by baseball to find examples of the writing strategy on a baseball-focused Web site. This lesson suddenly becomes more motivating, exciting, and memorable to this student.
Brain research shows that individuals remember events and facts in more detail for a longer period of time if there are emotions involved in the initial learning experience. This concept of emotional memory is highly useful as we use the Internet in our classrooms. Due to the timeliness and currency of the Internet and the fact that students can find information that naturally interests them, the Internet can increase the emotional impact of lessons, and making learning interesting, fun, and meaningful to students.
This seminar discusses the use of individual and class projects using the Internet to help students experience the joy of learning for themselves. As students gain experience learning for the pure joy of learning, their emotional interest, intrinsic motivation, and hunger for knowledge also increase.

The Internet is very useful for teaching English. Teachers can use it for gathering information for their classes, including teaching plans and materials for classroom use. They can subscribe to mailing lists related to TEFL/TESL, and exchange information with other teachers. They can subscribe to electronic journals or newsletters either by e-mail or using the World Wide Web and keep up with new trends of English teaching, finding new or interesting publications. They can consult with publishers on teaching materials. There are a wide variety of ways that the Internet can be used in the classroom. Teachers can organize "keypal" exchanges, and students can exchange letters with their keypals and have the experience of corresponding with people from all over the world. Students can use a mailing list, IECC-Survey, to conduct surveys for class projects. They can subscribe to student lists to exchange ideas with other students around the world. There are many learning materials on the World Wide Web, and students can use them to study English. They can read news in English using either by e-mail or on the World Wide Web. Students' newspapers or newsletters can be posted on the World Wide Web. Using the Internet for English teaching is new, and there are few books and papers on the subject, though there are many resources on the Internet. We need to explore ways to find materials on the Internet and experiment with using them to improve our teaching. This articles give some information about using the Internet.
