Background
SchoolsOnLine Israel is affiliated with the worldwide SchoolsOnLine, a charitable organization registered in the United States since 1996. SchoolsOnLine currently operates in 5600 schools across the United States and over 200 schools in 19 countries around the world. The founders and supporters of SchoolsOnLine Israel, including its staff and volunteers, believe in the central role of education in society and its importance in fostering mutual tolerance. SchoolsOnLine Israel uses the Internet, i.e. correspondence via e-mail and online forums, to initiate and maintain contact between Israeli junior and senior high school students who otherwise might never get to know one another, ultimately giving a much deeper meaning to the carefully planned face-to-face meetings that are held throughout the school year the real highlight of our program. The joint research and creative projects carried out by our paired groups of students from schools in different sectors, Arab and Jewish, special needs and mainstream, center and periphery, require that the Internet connection between them be exploited to the fullest in order to gradually proceed towards a final product a presentation made by the students at our project exhibition at year s end.

Can You See the Wind? Internet Integration Categories Have You Seen the Wind? is an Internet resource designed to help educators and students working on weather and hurricane topics. Throughout the information on the pages about using the Internet there will be links to information in the resource which can be used to teach about weather concepts and hurricanes. The strategies and ideas in the chart below are cumulative and build on one another. A Category 5 Internet - Using Educator is or probably has used all of these ideas and more. Category 4 As you integrate the Internet into your curriculum you will find different strategies work best for some units or topics. Don't feel that anything found online is superior to what can be found in books or in another form. All materials have their place. The power of the resources on the Internet are found in most part through the use of interaction, presentation of up-to-date information, access to primary source experts, and availability of information which might not be included in textbooks on the topic you are covering. Students must be taught good information processing skills and to authenticate information found online. This becomes more critical as Internet resources become more widely included and students begin to use search engines to gather their own information.

The Internet offers a wealth of information for students and teachers seeking English as a second language (ESL) resources. Dozens of ERIC Digests (short information syntheses) are available online on a wide range of topics related to ESL. The Web sites of the ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics and the National Clearinghouse for ESL Literacy Education offer newsletters, bibliographies, FAQs, and resource guides on many topics of interest to ESL teachers. Other organizations in the field also maintain extensive, informative Web sites. Publications and curriculum materials abound, including a number of electronic journals and magazines. Numerous listservs are available to facilitate discussions among ESL teachers and other ESL professionals. Pairing young children with buddies from another grade level may make the internet more accessible. The following sites are rich in information about using the internet as a teaching tool. Caution: young children should not spend inordinate amounts of time in front of a computer monitor when more meaningful learning occurs with real materials and peers.
