History G eorgetown is situated on the Credit River about 45 Kilometres from Toronto and 60 Kilometres from Hamilton. When George Kennedy, a descendant of United Empire Loyalists, established himself in the area in 1823, it was the abundant water supply for milling purposes that attracted this early entrepreneur. His mill became the beginning of a small settlement. By 1837, however, it was reported that there were still only three families living in the area of his mill known as "Hungry Hollow". It was the enterprising Barber brothers who in 1837 bought a wooden mill and foundry from Kennedy and renamed the small settlement Georgetown (presumably after George Kennedy). The Barber brothers' business flourished and attracted other industrialists such as the Dayfoots who arrived in the early 1840s and became pioneers in the leather and shoe trade in Ontario. It was the papermaking business, however, which the Barber brothers had operated since 1854, which became a real source of prosperity to the Georgetown community for over a century. Just as the excellent sites for water power and ponds in the early 1820s and the opening up of the York (or Toronto) to Guelph Road (now Hwy 7) in 1827 helped to establish this area as a settlement location, it was the building of the Grand Trunk Railroad through Georgetown and the Hamilton and North West Railroad that confirmed Georgetown would be the centre of commerce and industry in the north Halton area. Georgetown grew rapidly during the 1850s and 60s. By 1864 it had a population of 1250 and the citizens decided that it would be in their best interests to "have the management of their own local affairs in the hands of men of their choice". An application was made to Halton County Council for incorporation as a Village. This was granted on December 16, 1864.

Emily Chesley - a biography A Woman Of Means Emily Chesley Comes to London, Ontario Little did Emily know that one of her uncle's inventions, the Bloomer Disrobing Solution, would save her life and the lives of many young male Londoners too. The Flannigan family, including Emily, settled in a rambling Victorian mansion on Princess Ave. With steady royalties from Flannigan patents Emily was able to join polite society as a woman of means. The money was good in those days with the success of inventions like the vibratory earwax remover, a device which enjoyed early popularity in spite of side effects that included severe pain, dizziness, headaches and, occasionally, explosive cranial bleeding. Emily missed her pals from the Unity detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police but soon found solace and companionship among the ranks of the 7 th th were quick energetic and wore familiar red tunics. While the regiment accepted Emily completely, Emily had less luck fitting in with the ladies of London who were suspicious of her wild western past. Behind her back she was sometimes referred to as "that Western woman" or "the Irish dirt cutter." Emily ignored these slurs and enjoyed everything the city had to offer, from shopping in its bustling downtown to "taking the air" through long carriage rides to the surrounding townships.

(Hal) Rogers, O.C., O.B.E., founded the Association of Kinsmen Clubs on February 20th, 1920, in Hamilton, Ontario. It was lonliness - a craving for companionship - which brought 12 young Hamilton men together in what was to become the first Kinsmen Club. These founding members had the fortunate insight to immediately superimpose an objective of "Aid to Others" upon their activities. Throughtout the history of Kin's development, friendship has always been the torch. Had there not been any other purpose, but their own companionship, the little group in Hamilton would never have matured beyond a small circle of close, personal friends. Instead, that group expanded and spread to other cities, where the pattern of formation was again repeated. In a single decade, there were 30 new clubs scattered from the Pacific Ocean to Montreal. Spouses of Kinsmen, because of their natural friendship and common interests, began to meet together in the 1930's. As the Kinsmen Clubs grew, so did the ladies groups. In 1942, official recognition was given in the Kinsmen National By-laws making a Kinette Club (shortened from their original name of Kinsmenettes) an auxiliary organization to the Kinsmen Club. In 1988, the Kinettes and the Association took a big step forward when they changed their By-laws to allow any women (and not only a spouse of Kinsmen) to join a Kinette Club.

A Brief History of Shakespeare Our hamlet was founded in 1832 by David Bell from Scotland. He is credited with being the first settler in Shakespeare. He did this by leasing and eventually buying 300 acres of land which included all the north half of present day Shakespeare. Bells Corners sat on the original trail which led settlers to the Huron Tract. Alexander Michell, owner of the first hotel, suggested the name Shakespeare in 1852. The hamlets fortunes grew after the Grand Trunk Railway passed through. It became an important centre as farmers shipped wheat and grain by train. By 1867 the population was around 500 people. There were five general stores, shoe shops, blacksmiths, two carriage factories, tailors, potters ,a coopers shop, doctors, a two room school house, cabinet factory, tannery, four hotels, opera hall and even a weekly newspaper. Modern conveniences like the telephone arrived in 1910 and electricity in 1922. The first time the road through the hamlet was paved was in 1924. Today the hamlet is home to 750 people. Operation Red Nose's philosophy Certain values underlie the philosophy of Operation Red Nose. It is non-moralist and is neutral regarding the consumption of alcohol. Operation Red Nose was the name used by the Canadian Armed Forces stationed in Valcartier near Quebec City for its annual mid-winter exercise held in the frigid month of February. Organizers thought this name was perfectly suited to a volunteer designated driving service offered during the cold climes of December. Permission was granted to use the name for our innovative road safety campaign. OLDTIMERS' HOCKEY A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE In October of 1974, John F. Gouett founded the Canadian Oldtimers' Hockey Association (COHA), and prepared the way for the most significant event in the history of Oldtimers' Hockey...the staging of the First National Oldtimers' Hockey Tournament in Peterborough, Ontario in February 1975. The major success of the First National Oldtimers' Hockey Tournament that brought 56 teams and over 1000 players from across our nation together was the foundation that John utilized for his development of the COHA as a national sports' association with the recognition of the Government of Canada (Recreation Canada) to provide programs and services for it's membership across Canada and internationally. The Golden Years of Oldtimers' Hockey from 1975 to 1980 was recognized by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) with an associate membership status for the COHA with direct involvement with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and its member country associations. Member country associations of the IIHF from Denmark, Great Britain, Holland, Japan and Switzerland worked closely with John to establish an International Cup of Oldtimers' Hockey that hundreds of teams participated in along with over 150 Oldtimers' Hockey Clubs and 3,000 players that traveled from Canada to these major international hockey events that were coordinated by John and his COHA national office staff.

At that meeting there was 11 members present: Gail Christie, Elizabeth Dupuis, Bob and Brenda Gibson, Matt Heindl, Bob and Barb MacCrimmon, Diane McWhinnie, Frank and Marlene Penney, and Eda VanderVeen. Also present at the meeting was Mr. Don Palmer representing the Canadian Kennel Club who had been invited to chair the meeting. The first executive consisted of Marlene Penney as President, Eda VanderVeen as Vice-President, Barbara MacCrimmon as Secretary and Newsletter Editor, Bob Gibson as Treasurer and Gail Christie, Brenda Gibson, Matt Heindl and Dianne McWhinnie as Directors. The first newsletter was published in February, 1990. On June 1, 1990 the Club was recognized officially by the Canadian Kennel Club. The Pomeranian Club of Ontario's first conformation and obedience sanction match was held on Sunday, August 26, 1990 at Lake Ontario Park in Kingston under the chairmanship of Barbara MacCrimmon. Using Marlene Penney's words in her Presidents Message in the following newsletter, the sanction match was a "smashing SUCCESS!!". As a result of this success the Pomeranian Club of Ontario was now allowed to hold its first Specialty which was to occur in September at Cornwall in conjunction with the Pomeranian Club of Canada Specialty.
