Brief Information about Orangutans:
Literally translated in Malay, orangutan means "Person of the Forest". The male orangutan is usually about 5 feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds. Females are generally about 1/2 that size. Unlike other great apes, male orangutans like to live alone except when mating, whereas females will sometimes be seen with other females in groups of four or five and with their young.
The orangutan is found only in the Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sumatra, almost exclusively in lowland rainforest areas. Orangutans are so finely adapted to the rainforests that they are unable to adapt well to any other habitat. One of the world's largest primates, it is second only to the gorilla in size.
Unlike the other great apes, the adult orangutan is a shy and a solitary animal. This behaviour reflects the relative scarcity of food in the orangutan's habitat. To survive they must browse for fruits and other edible plants across a vast range of forest, making a new nest each night in the crown of a tree.

Center for Great Apes (Center for Orangutan and Chimpanzee Conservation) The Center for Great Apes, located in Wauchula, Florida, was founded in 1993 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its primary purpose is to provide a permanent sanctuary in a safe and enriching environment for orangutans and chimpanzees in need of long-term life care … specifically those who have been used in entertainment or kept as pets by private owners. The Center began as an effort to offer lifetime care for five young apes born at a private breeding facility before they were sold as pets or entertainers, and so far, has additionally taken in seven older apes with circus and pet backgrounds. Construction is again underway to provide housing for other great apes in need of care.
Currently, the Center houses

ORANGUTAN Malaysian Islands Unknown The only great ape that lives on the Asian continent, the orangutan is found on the Malaysian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Its name means "man of the forest," and it is one of thousands of species of wildlife that live in tropical Asian forests. The orangutan's story is similar to that of a large number of Asian animals: its forest habitat is being rapidly destroyed by conversion to agriculture, both by large commercial plantations and smaller subsistence farms. At the same time, humans are killing the orang's prey species (birds and small mammals) for food and capturing it for the pet trade. here are an estimated 30,000 orangutans left in the wild, about 20,000 on Borneo and 10,000 on Sumatra. Scientists are uncertain whether all orangutans are one species, or whether the Sumatran and Bornean populations have become so isolated from each other that they are two subspecies. (Click here to read more about species and subspecies The great apes include gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans. Of these, orangs are the most arboreal (living in trees). It is rare for an adult orang to ever touch the ground. Their strong hands, handlike feet, and long arms (with a span of up to 8 feet) are supremely adapted to life in the trees. They do not even have to come to the ground to drink they drink the water that collects in tree holes.

This project, the first of it's kind for orangutans, investigates the way that orangutans self-medicate in order to treat illness and eradicate parasites. The project is planned for a further three years (two and a half years have already been completed). This research will help us to understand the complex interaction of animal, plant and parasites, self-medication and natural anti-parasitic possibilities in the primate diet and consequently open new avenues for use of this knowledge in human medicine. Investigation of self-medication behaviour in the orangutan is important for understanding how orangutans combat parasite infection that affect their health, reproduction and ultimately their survival. They show at least the same parental devotion to their young. Many are better parents. They are stronger and more agile than humans and they come quite near to humans in intelligence. Some (but not all) human intelligence is being used to further causes that threaten apes with extinction within a decade, yet in observing their society we can learn more about our own beginnings. Human DNA differs from that of apes by between 1.6 and 3.6 per cent.
Leadership and the survival of the creatures on the planet
The Indonesian rainforest is vanishing fast and many species, great and small, are threatened.
Megawati Sukamoputri, Indonesia's first female president, has indicated that tackling illegal logging is firmly on the agenda. Conservation groups hope that her administration will ensure good forest management and effective law enforcement to safeguard Indonesia's rainforrest - a treasure-trove of biodiversity of global importance.
Megawati recently announcd that Indonesia's forest concession holders, many of whom source timber illegally, will soon need a government-approved certificate of sustainable forest management if they want to continue operations. The Government also recently ordered a temporary ban on log exports in a desperate bid to curb rampant illegal logging.

  • Orangutans are in grave danger of extinction because their rainforest habitat is vanishing at an unprecedented rate. The biggest threat is permanent agriculture in the form of palm oil plantations and more recently illegal logging and gold mining within protected areas. The aim of the Orangutan Foundation is to protect the orangutan and to conserve its rainforest habitat whilst caring for and repatriating ex-captive orangutans back into the wild. The Orangutan Foundation seeks to actively lobby governments and educate the public about the orangutan and its habitat so that it might be saved from extinction. Background The orangutan was once found throughout Southeast Asia but now the species only survives in relic populations on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. Orangutan populations have declined by 50% over the last ten years and their habitat by 80% over the last twenty years. Recent estimates suggest that wild orangutan numbers could be as low as 15,000. At this rate of decline the wild orangutan will be extinct in 10-20 years. The Orangutan Foundation, established in 1991, is an international chapter of the Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) which was founded in 1986 by Dr. Biruté Galdikas, recognised as the world’s leading expert on orangutans. Dr. Galdikas embarked upon her study of wild orangutans, now in its 30th year, with the encouragement of the late, renowned Dr. Louis Leakey. Dr. Leakey also supported Jane Goodall’s study of chimpanzees that has spanned 40 years, and the late Dian Fossey’s 19 year study of mountain gorillas.
