Skating in School Is... ...a program that brings one of the most popular recreational sports into your school gymnasium. Our internationally certified staff emphasizes safety, skill building, and helping students develop positive attitudes towards active lifestyles to prevent disease and promote health Our program was developed by Rollerblade® and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education to meet the seven national standards for physical education. The Surgeon General's report on physical activity for adolescents and young adults recommends quality, daily physical education classes that are enjoyable, promote confidence in being physically active and involve friends and peers. Our program satisfies that recommendation. Nearly half of American youths age 12-21 are not physically active on a regular basis, and daily enrollment in physical education classes has dropped to 25%. The CDC has evaluated some interventions to promote physical activity through schools, and those evaluated were found successful. Our program allows youngsters to participate in sport as individuals, and to realize measurable success towards developing active, healthy lifestyles.

Freshman Early Achievement and Transition (FEAT) is a rigorous four-week preparatory program for motivated college-bound students combining a 2-credit preparatory course called "Nova" and a 4-credit OSU Baccalaureate Core course.
Purpose
Statistics indicate that even for the highest achievers, transition issues can be difficult and play a pivotal role in the first year of college. The requirements for critical thinking and performance on college-level exams often overwhelm a student who is also adjusting to challenges of the new learning and living environment. This comprehensive summer experience addresses these issues in a hands-on, challenging, and interactive manner, while introducing students to different majors and providing academic advising. Taking responsibility for one's own learning, discovering fundamentals of academic leadership, and making good academic decisions are topics woven throughout the program. Components Nova course:
  • Unique learning workshops using a model called Learning Nova with a nine-year record of success helping students excel at college-level work.

Student Services Child Nutrition Programs National School Lunch Program (NSLP) School Breakfast Program (SBP) ... Resources Overview of Summer Food Service Program Oregon Department of Education
Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does a child's need for good nutrition. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to help children in low-income areas get the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow, throughout the summer months when they are out of school. The Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, administers SFSP at the Federal level. State education agencies administer the program in most States. In some areas, the State health or social service department or an FNS regional office may be designated. Here in Oregon, SFSP is run by approved sponsors, including school districts, local government agencies, camps, or private nonprofit organizations. Sponsors provide free meals to a group of children at a central site, such as a school or a community center. They receive payments from the USDA, through the Oregon Department of Education, for the meals they serve and for their documented operating costs. Nationwide and here in Oregon, SFSP meal sites are approved as open, enrolled, or camp sites. Open sites operate in low-income areas where at least half of the children come from families with incomes at or below 185 percent of the Federal poverty level, making them eligible for free and reduced-price school meals. Meals are served free to any child at the open site. Enrolled sites provide free meals to children enrolled in an activity program at the site where at least half of them are eligible for free and reduced-price meals. Camps may also participate in SFSP. They receive payments only for the meals served to children who are eligible for free and reduced-price meals.

Many counties provide a youth camp as part of their educational program offerings. Traditional resident camps are generally for youth in grades 4-6; some serve youth through middle school. Day camps are also available in some counties. Counties may use local camp facilities or the Oregon 4-H Center near Salem as program sites. The camp program or educational theme is tied to the resources available at the site. At the Oregon 4-H Center interpretive trails and natural science education support materials are provided under the leadership of a State 4-H Specialist. Most counties with a camp program also have a counselor or leadership training program for high school age youth who want to learn to work with youngsters. For specific information on a particular county's camp program check the County Extension Office listing.
