trail sites being marked and preserved by OCTA The oregonCalifornia trails Associationplays a prominent and commemorate a major facet of american history.
    http://www.trailshead.org/
For the past 16 years, OCTA has been at the very forefront of researching, preserving, marking and publicizing the trails. Their efforts have led to the discovery of countless visible trail remnants. They have battled and sought compromises with those who planned projects that would have disturbed or destroyed trail ruts. OCTA has supported and lobbied for legislation which has furthered the cause of trail preservation and public awareness. They have encouraged trail scholarship to broaden our understanding and appreciation of the overland trails experience and its impact on American History. John Mark Lambertson
    Director, National Frontier Trails Center

    Who Explored the Oregon Trail?
The emigrants of the 1840s were not the first to travel the Oregon Trail. The colorful history of our country makes heroes out of the explorers, mountain men, soldiers, and scientists who opened up the West.
In 1540 the Spanish explorer Coronado ventured as far north as present-day Kansas, but the inland routes across the plains remained the sole domain of Native Americans until 1804, when Lewis and Clark skirted the edges on their epic journey of discovery to the Pacific Northwest and Zeb Pike explored the "Great American Desert," as the Great Plains were then known.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition had a direct influence on the economy of the West even before the explorers had returned to St. Louis. Private John Colter left the expedition on the way home in 1806 to take up the fur trade business. For the next 20 years the likes of Manuel Lisa, Auguste and Pierre Choteau, William Ashley, James Bridger, Kit Carson, Tom Fitzgerald, and William Sublette roamed the West. These part romantic adventurers, part self-made entrepreneurs, part hermits were called mountain men. By 1829, Jedediah Smith knew more about the West than any other person alive.
The Americans became involved in the fur trade in 1810 when John Jacob Astor, at the insistence of his friend Thomas Jefferson, founded the Pacific Fur Company in New York. Astor sent Wilson Price Hunt west in 1811. Hunt followed the Lewis and Clark route as far as the Dakotas and then went overland across Union Pass, near Jackson Hole. The choice of routes proved unsuitable, and it was after much hardship that the Hunt party arrived in Astoria (known then as Fort Astor) in the spring of 1812.

Historyno matter how it has been and is reportedis a story with many viewpoints.
Insofar as the American West is concerned, there are the two broad, racially based viewpoints of Native American and Euro-american. While most white Americans are apparently basically comfortable being identified as Americans, the same cannot be said of pre-European natives regarding the three generic labels used to identify us. Such a broad label obscures the many tribal identities that once existed and those that still do.
Furthermore, such a broad identity has been the basis for stereotypes such as all Indians speaking the same native language, all Indians looking alike, and there being one Indian culture. Behind the obscurity imposed by such a broad label and behind the stereotypes are, of course, hundreds of languages, a variety of body types and other physical characteristics, and many different cultures.
If and when a comprehensive Native American history of this continent is written, by Native Americans of course, it will have many voices. If it were a song, it would be sung by a chorus.
