Blue Web'n
Global SchoolNet
The Global SchoolNet Foundation organizes, manages, and facilitates projects for schools. Their HILITES archives and mailing list keeps educators up-to-date on project ideas. The project registry allows schools to register upcoming events in which others might want to participate. Projects range from videoconferencing to e-mail only. If you want to participate with CUSeeMe schools, there is a whole section devoted to those who have the CUSeeMe software. Global SchoolHouse The Global SchoolNet is part of the Global SchoolNet Organization. It is designed to build an online community. I*EARN (International Education and Resource Network) This nonprofit organization creates structured projects that facilitate engaged learning and youth making a difference on an International scale. Project areas include interdisciplinary topics such as the environment/science, art/literature, and social studies/politics. Some examples of past projects are the Holocaust/Genocide, the Building Wells for Clean Water in Nicaragua, and the Planetary Notions, an environmental newsletter.

Observations of the courstship behavior of the pigeons investigate sexual selection. The data is processed by the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology, and is disseminated to participating classes. A summary may be read online. Materials cost $15.

http://www.keralaenergy.org/act-ind.htm
The State of Kerala in India has long been acclaimed universally for its unique development profile, characterised by achievements in the fields of literacy, education and health care, inspite of a low level of per capita income. But, the "Kerala Model" development has still to grapple with issues like rejuvenation of industries from slow pace of progress and those related to sustainable development, among others. Government of Kerala has also formulated a new industrial policy so as to make the State investment friendly and to ensure a nine percent average annual industrial growth. In the process of promoting integrated sustainable development, the Centre also concentrate on serious empirical research on industrial energy demand/consumption aspects. Two such programmes presently in progress are:

  • While housekeeping measures and energy conservation efforts to a certain extent reduce energy consumption, there is no better approach than achieving energy efficiency through pre-implementation design efforts. EMC by way of conducting energy efficiency studies identifies integrated energy efficient design systems for existing industries to reduce total energy costs. For new industrial projects coming up in the State, EMC provide cost-effective, energy efficient and environmentally sound technologies specific to the end-use application. Necessary support systems for providing integrated energy services, include a good data base on energy efficient technology and process systems and equipments.

Collaboratives In collaboratives, students join together via the Internet to solve, research or document a problem or to share information. Collaboratives are constantly being created and some are only offered for a certain period of time. Also included in this section are collaborative research projects that students can participate in, though the project is not necessarily designed for the classroom. Classroom FeederWatch is a research and interdisciplinary education curriculum designed for students in grades 5-8 by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, with funding from the National Science Foundation. Students learn how science and scientists work, and in the process become scientists themselves. The students fully participate in an annual feeder-bird survey conducted by ornithologists at the Lab. The cost to participate is $99 per year.

    Introduction
A data dictionary defines all the categories or types of information in a database. The CHIN Data Dictionaries contain a description of database fields for museum collection and archaeological site management and documentation. Each data field in the CHIN Data Dictionaries is described by a field label, a mnemonic, a name, a definition, entry rules, related fields, a data type, examples, a discipline, and a source. The CHIN Data Dictionaries are used:
    • as the standard for Canadian institutions that contribute collections data to CHIN's Artefacts Canada and to the Image Gallery in the Virtual Museum of Canada Gateway.

    Goal of Report:
This report is prepared to summarize the activities on our campus that have resulted from the selection to participate in this grant awarded to the Coalition for Christian Colleges and Universities through the Pew Foundation's Global Stewardship Initiative. Montreat College's selection to participate in this grant effort coincided very effectively with the initiation of our Christian Environmental Studies Center (CESC @ MC). This center's directives are to establish collaborative efforts between Christian Environmental Organizations, academic programming, and the Christian Community. The supportive efforts of the CCCU / Pew GSI grant and the developments in the CESC @ MC both will be reflected in this report since these developments were very significantly linked.
    Global Stewardship Task Force:
The formation of a campus Global Stewardship Task Force (GSTF) was requested immediately upon selection to participate in this grant. Those individuals that contributed to the grant development and the team consulted in the discussions of the CESC @ MC were designated as the GSTF. Thus, the GSTF was established on campus to both administrate the activities of the Global Stewardship Initiative and review the developments of the Christian Environmental Studies Center @ Montreat College.

Henn Ojaveer from the Estonian Marine Institute completed his Great Lakes/Baltics fellowship in GLNPO on December 1st. His project examined the impacts of an invasive zooplankton species, Cercopagis pengoi, common to both the Great Lakes and the Baltic Sea. This invasive organism is potentially problematic in that it is very prolific and may be able to out-compete other native zooplankton species. It also has a large hooked tail and has been documented to foul fishing gear. On November 23rd Henn presented a seminar detailing the results of his work, with a final report to be completed by February 2000. As an aside, Cercopagis, which was found for the first time in Lake Ontario in 1998, was found this past summer in Lake Michigan in Traverse Bay and off of Waukegan Harbor. Its spread in Lake Michigan will be monitored closely next summer by our office. Contact: Marc Tuchman , U.S. EPA - GLNPO (312) 353-1369

    STRATEGIC PLAN

    Organization
INTRODUCTION For nearly four decades, Bird Studies Canada (BSC), formerly known as the Long Point Bird Observatory (LPBO), has marshalled thousands of volunteers for bird studies. It now draws over 6,000 volunteers annually, actively participating in local, regional, national and international programs of research and education in support of bird conservation. In response to this growth of interest and commitment, BSC is entering a new phase of its history. BSC obtained revised Supplementary Letters Patent in April 1998, and has adopted a new constitution (By-Law Number 1). The future brings new opportunities along with challenges and risks. They require adaptation and innovation. "Strategic" activities are those needed to secure the long term viability and effectiveness of the organization and its programs. The strategic plan (and the planning processes that led to it) identifies key directions and actions that provide focus and a practical "operating envelope" for directing the work that lies ahead. The plan provides a context for the periodic re-setting of priorities, and for developing business plans, a communications program and other measures to achieve them. The main audience for this document is internal to BSC, i.e. Board, committees, and staff. Information in the document will also be useful, in other formats, for members and the general public. The document identifies a mission and a vision, the underlying values and principles, and the strategic intents and objectives for BSC. It builds upon the wealth of experience from LPBO, which continues as an integral part of BSC. The document will be revised and up-dated periodically in the light of experience and achievements.
