The Orthodontal Tourist Dentists in far-flung destinations are giving British holidaymakers something to smile about, says Ellen Himelfarb Dental basics How does the song go? "I'd walk a million miles for one of your smiles"? Ah, but how far would you travel to buy not just a new smile, but a whole new mouth - or, at the very least, a crown, a filling or a smart porcelain veneer? Perhaps not a million miles, but certainly to New York, Thailand, the Caribbean or any of the other destinations increasingly patronised by holidaymakers with famously bad British teeth.
Travelling abroad for a nip and a tuck here, an implant or a Botox jab there - and combining the surgery with a recuperative spell on the beach - is now well established. Dental tourism, however, is the latest thing, with more and more travellers offsetting the misery of chair, drill and "open wide" by shopping, sunbathing and sightseeing while recovering feeling in Novocaine-numbed mouths.
Tooth-led tourism was pioneered in New York, most famously by Martin Amis in the mid-1990s, since when the city's dentists have been telling orally challenged celebs such as Sophie Dahl and Kate Moss that "this really won't hurt at all". Where visitors used to schedule a massage and facial between trips to Barney's, they now squeeze in some face-changing time with Marc Lowenberg or Gregg Lituchy at their clinic overlooking Central Park.
The duo has wiped the crooked smiles off the faces of Keith Richards, Bryan Ferry, Iggy Pop, Cindy Crawford and many others. But they also do a swift "civilian" business. On average, Lowenberg treats two Britons a week, who typically venture over for a "smile makeover", a Broadway matinee and a week at the five-star Mandarin Oriental across the street.

with FAS/FAE can be directed to services that are already there from the Child DevelopmentCentre, occupational health, to social services, to orthodontal work
http://www.ccsa.ca/FASIS/FAS Report/epilogue.htm
EPILOGUE As this study has demonstrated, Literacy-Based Support Circles, Cognitive Compensatory Tools, and Cognitive Enhancement Tools can help adults with FAS/FAE live more productive and fulfilled lives. As well, these tools enable the families and support workers to function more effectively. The interventions did not effect major changes in the overall life situations of the subjects but they did help, and this is an important finding. This research project has also shown that those suffering from FAS/FAE are seemingly invisible to the educational institutions and social service agencies which should be helping them and their families. Indeed, this was such an overwhelming problem in the research that we began our conclusions by summarizing the inequities that FAS/FAE victims and their families face. FAS/FAE is a difficult disorder both to identify and to support. It is highly complex and the behaviours are often very deceiving. Consequently, parents and professionals require a high level of FAS/FAE knowledge as well as skills related to understanding and managing challenging behaviours. Unfortunately, parents seem to be the only people acquiring this expertise and often carry the burden of care with little help or understanding from the outside world. If these children meet with success, the parents are usually responsible for engineering this outcome. For all such parents, the FAS/FAE disorder is a major factor defining their lives. Some have been driven to the brink of financial, emotional, and physical ruin. And yet, rather than helping these families, front line agencies have often ignored them or insulted them by suggesting that they were trying to claim resources which they did not deserve.

SAARS: Gram-positive cocci (GPC) (microbiology)
Microbiology of Gram-positive cocci.
Gram-positive cocci (GPC) are seen on a Gram stain. If they occur primarily as mostly spherical cells arranged in grape-like clusters, then they can be reported as resembling staphylococci. On the other hand, if they occur primarily as somewhat elongated cells arranged in pairs or chains, then they can be reported as resembling streptococci/enterococci. Furthermore, the pneumococcus typically occurs as lancet-shaped pairs, often seen in the sputa of patients with bacterial pneumonia in the presence of high numbers of polymorphonuclear (PMNs, or "polys") white blood cells; such a direct Gram stain is considered diagnostic for the pneumococcus.
Staphylococcus spp.
Staphylococci grow as large gray or white to yellow colonies on sheep blood agar. They show more robust growth under areobic than anaerobic conditions. They may be beta- or non-hemolytic. Unlike the streptococci and enterococci, staphylococci are catalase positive. Colonies of S. aureus

Question Posted By: Christine on Saturday, January 16, 1999
One doctor has said that the membrane under the tongue is no longer clipped as was done in previous years...our grandson's orthodontist has said that because his tongue membrane was not cut soon enough, he didn't learn to swallow correctly and is now having orthodontal(?) problems. Our new grand-daughter appears to be "tongue-tied" also and her pediatrician has said it doesn't matter. Could you please explain this "condition" so that I can give my son and his wife more information. They can then make a better decision as to whether or not to further pursue what needs to be done. Thank you.
Dear Christine : Ankyloglossia inferior is a common variation in tongue anatomy . It’s caused by the frenum ( connection between the tongue and floor of the mouth ) being short or stout. It often disappears spontaneously or with sucking if the frenum is not prominent or is sufficiently thin.
Does it affect the speech ? it could , if thick or short enough to affect the movement of the tongue. How much it affects speech is variable too . So , orthodontal problems maybe due to a combination of variabilities in the mouth structure of your grandson’s , including the tongue-tie..

Mrs. T. Ahearn Mrs. T. Ahearn Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Health if he will give details of the number of people awaiting orthodontal treatment in South Tipperary; the number being treated at present; the number awaiting assessment; and if he will outline the steps, if any, he will take to ensure that those awaiting treatment will be treated before it is too late. Minister for Health (Dr. O'Connell) John F. O'Connell Minister for Health (Dr. O'Connell): I understand from the South Eastern Health Board that there are 565 children undergoing specialist orthodontic treatment in south Tipperary and there are 184 on the waiting list for such treatment. 193 children are awaiting assessment. Urgent cases are treated as a matter of urgency. There has been a significant improvement in the level of orthodontic services in the south Tipperary area as a result of the additional moneys made available by the Government. In addition a full-time Consultant Orthodontist will be taking up appointment with the board after the summer which will result in further improvement in the provision of orthodontic services in the region. Special Report Manulife’s Dental Health Management: Today and Tomorrow As one of the largest dental benefit providers in Canada, Manulife Financial is committed to continually enhancing our dental benefit products to ensure that they will accommodate the ever-changing needs of our plan sponsors and plan members. Manulife's dental benefit plans are designed to provide necessary protection to support high quality standards of dental treatment and services, as well as provide effective methods to meet plan sponsors’ cost considerations. Canadians’ dental health needs have changed significantly over the last decade, and so the plan designs available in the dental insurance industry have changed to meet them. (See the chart and graph on this page which depict typical dental procedures and their range of costs for 1985 and 1997.) In the 1980s, typical dental benefit plans included such features as: In addition, there was limited computer system technology for claims adjudication and data reporting. Dental claims involved paper forms that were mailed to and from insurance carriers. As we entered the late 1980s and early 1990s, the cost of dental services rose steadily. Also, new dental procedures were introduced to provincial fee guides, and dental insurance protection grew in importance to Canadians. The escalating dental costs understandably became a significant concern for plan sponsors and the insurance industry. Attempts were made to place stricter dollar limits per year on dental services, limit the choice of dentists, and limit accessibility for specialized needs. These controls were known as "dental capitation," but they were not viable solutions and did not achieve the desired levels of quality, service or cost containment.
