Returning river otters to former habitat
Thank you Mr. Sevin, sir
By Tom Krause The coastal marshes of southern Louisiana have been blessed since creation with fertile sediment that has been carried by the Mississippi and other large rivers on a slow, southerly path into the Gulf of Mexico. These immense delta wetlands changed over eons as suspended soil settled, resettled, and finally rested to enrich a small plant or a large one. Numerous river channels in the great southern delta were diverted again and again creating ever-increasing land masses and vegetated marshes interspersed with myriads of channels, potholes, and shallow lakes.

River Otters They swim, the play, they dive, they dig, they hunt. They are a lot of fun to watch. Ocean Journey has three North American river otters and they love to play. They were named after Colorado rivers: Blue, Slater and Gunnison. The otters are about three feet long and twenty pounds. They are built for speed. Small webbed feet and long tails help them zip around. Otters also have beautiful brown pelts. During the 1800's, they were almost hunted to extinction in Colorado. It took most of the last century to bring them back. Blue, Slater and Gunnison were found abandoned as babies and are now at Ocean Journey under the care of their trainer. Their trainer says they have very different personalities and markings. The otters may be cute, but it is important to remember they are wild animals with different instincts and reactions. To think of them as pets, or cute little fuzzies, takes away the message of worrying about their natural habitats which are under constant pressure from humans.

"In the hearts of the children,
a pure love still grows"
John Denver from The Rose That Shattered the Stone
Little kids and "big" kids love river otters. The river otter is a favorite animal of almost everyone. ROP will attempt to collect information and activities that will help you and your children or classroom learn about this inquisitive and dynamic animal. From time to time we will also include letters from children (and those “big kids”) who have written to us to share their feelings about otters and this Project. We welcome knowing your feelings about otters and any experiences you may have so we can pass them on to others who are hungry for this knowledge.

Tremendous Support from Local Schools
for the River Otter Project! Several schools have really outdone themselves in support of the New York River Otter Project this year. Thousands of dollars and hundreds of towels were donated from everyone's efforts and we would like to acknowledge their efforts. Now that the release part of the project is over, no more towels are needed. Equally important is the educational component as the children are learning some very valuable lessons on our State's natural resources as well as the biology of this exciting and dynamic mammal, the northern river otter.

Anglesey, an island off the north coast of Wales in the UK, is approximately 35km wide with an estimated population of 70,000 with a highest point of 220m- though not as flat as many believe it to be (try cycling around here). Anglesey is an island. I know this may sound obvious but it does come as a surprise to some. It is separated from the mainland of Wales by the Menai Strait , a long narrow channel about 26.5km/ 16.4 miles long. The tide comes in at both ends- the Liverpool Bay end (east) and the Caernarfon Bay end (west)- creating an astonishing tidal flows. The inter-tidal zone (the bit permanently under water) averages no more than 500 metres wide but can reach a maximum depth of 26 metres, though more than half the length registers no more than 5 metres. The whole of the Strait is navigable and when it reaches an area called The Swellies between the two bridges linking Anglesey with the mainland this is reduced to just 30 metres wide in places with a depth of between 14m and 5m below Chart Datum. It could be said that The Swellies is where it all happens in the Strait. As I said the tide comes in at both ends and generally the Swellies is the meeting point. It experiences an incoming tide by first entering from the west (Caernarfon Bay-west). At the same time the sea is rushing around the top of the island around to the other end (Liverpool Bay-east). This enters the Strait at a place called

Contact: Ell-Piret Multer, (541) 750-7338 Young male river otters from the Lower Columbia River were shown to have reproductive tract disorders that correlated with several environmental contaminants present in the river, according to a report released today by scientists at the National Biological Service's Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center in Corvallis, Ore. The fish-eating river otters were studied to evaluate organochlorine insecticides, PCBs, dioxins, furans, and heavy metals in the Lower Columbia River. Body and organ weights and measurements were compared between the Lower Columbia River and other geographical areas. Baculums and testicles of young males were shorter or smaller than in animals of the same age class from non- polluted areas. Livers and spleens were also enlarged in some river otters from the Lower Columbia River. Principal investigator Dr. Charles J. Henny stated that "at this stage, we do not know which contaminant is primarily responsible for these abnormalities. The identified contaminants are highly linked with each other, and we have not evaluated all the contaminants found in the river." Henny added, "Many contaminants can be linked with the size of reproductive organs. We need to collect more information from additional otters, including sperm counts of adults."

Iowa River Otters Explore New Homes
By Lowell Washburn
Iowa Department of Natural Resources CLEAR LAKEDue to a unique partnership involving Iowa fur trappers and the Department of Natural Resources, wild river otters are continuing to expand their range across Iowa. "Our current mission is to introduce a population of native, Iowa-produced river otters into new watersheds that do not currently support the animals," said DNR Furbearer Resource Specialist, Ron Andrews. "Our program design is really quite unique. Essentially, we have enlisted the aid of licensed Iowa fur takers to find and capture otters within watersheds where the furbearers are most numerous," said Andrews. "The otters are live trapped by selected trappers using foot hold traps. When an animal is captured, the trapper notifies the DNR. We transfer the otters into cages and transport them to their new home. The whole process is usually complete within a few hours." Trappers are paid an expense fee of $100 for each otter they trap for release. According to Andrews, trappers are the most efficient and cost effective way for the DNR to obtain releasable otters. "We have currently designated 12 new sites for otter releases, and hope to place a total of 10 otters into each new stream" said Andrews.

The Tulsa Zoo beats out eight institutions to acquire abandoned otters from a Florida rehabilitation center
TULSA, Okla., December 11 - After a competitive and extensive application process, the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a Florida marine animal rehabilitation center, selected the Tulsa Zoo over eight other institutions to receive a pair of eleven-month old river otters to place in the zoo's newly renovated otter exhibit. The male and female otter pair, named Dallas and Weaser, had a difficult life prior to being rescued by the Clearwater Aquarium. A two and a half year old pup, Dallas was originally thought to be a rat and was found abandoned and near death behind a dumpster in Largo, Florida. Weaser was discovered by the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) at a private Florida residence and was emaciated and dehydrated. Both pups are now in excellent health and are adapting well to their new home at the Tulsa Zoo. "There is a huge demand among zoos to acquire otters," said Andrew Branson, Tulsa Zoo's Aquarium and Children's Zoo curator. "We are honored to have received Dallas and Weaser and attribute our acquisition of these mammals to the quality and caliber of our zoo staff as well as the newly renovated otter exhibit which we can't wait to show off to the public on Saturday, December 7."

Inhabiting five of the continents of the world, Otters are truly amazing mammals. Otters are unique in many ways. For instance, Otters are the only marine mammals to have fur instead of blubber. There are thirteen species of otters alive today. There used to be fourteen, but the fourteenth otter, Maxwell's otter, is presumed extinct due to draining of their waters to perform genocide in Iraq. Otters are very smart; they are one of only a handful of tool using mammals. Sea Otters use rocks to pry abalone off rocks and to break open shells.
