Owls are divided into two groups or subfamilies: Tytoninae (barn and bay owls) and Striginae (all other owls). In North America, the two groups are represented by breeding species; 15 species occur in Montana. Owls are basically nocturnal or crepuscular (active in the last morning or early evening). However, during winter, some species may be observed almost any time and in a variety of habitats because they are in search of food. Because most owls are active in times of low light or complete darkness, they have evolved a low-frequency vocal repertoire as a means of communication. They are closely related to hawks. Owls sleep during the day and emerge at night to hunt small prey. There are about 162 different species of owls alive today, inhabiting a huge variety of ecological niches, from rainforests to tundra. Anatomy Owls have a large head and large eyes that face forwards (unlike other birds, whose eyes are on the sides of their head). This eye placement gives them binocular vision and very precise depth perception. Also, there are circles of radiating feathers surrounding each eye, giving them a wide-eyed, alert look. Some owls have feathered ear tufts; these are not ears, but are part of the owl's camouflage. Flight Many owls have thick feathers that absorb the sounds that their wings make in flight. Prey and Hunting Owls are carnivores that hunt during the night (they are nocturnal). They use their keen sense of sight to find prey in the dark (owls see mostly in black and white). They have an acute sense of hearing which also helps in finding meals. Owls are stealth hunters, they can easily sneak up on their prey since their fluffy feathers give them almost silent flight. Owls have two methods of hunting Perch and pounce - the owl waits on a low tree branch until it spots prey. It then swoops down onto the prey. Four of the nine owls are fairly common nesting species, while the others either nest occasionally or are found during particular seasons. Three of our owls depend primarily on native grasslands and have shown population declines presumably in response to the loss of required food and habitat. Owls have extraordinary sight and hearing capability. Their eyes are large and used to hunt during the night. Ears of the owl are even more remarkable. They are openings in the side of the head surrounded by deep, soft feathers, which the owl can shape to direct sound into the ear. The bird's facial disc, generally outlined by some change in feather pattern or color on the face, is also believed to help direct sound into the ear canal. Often mysterious to man, owls figure largely in myths, folklore and superstition. Their large eyes, nocturnal nature and eerie calls have led to fear and loathing by many. Owls play an important role in the balance of forest and open land environments. Much like hawks, owls prey on rodent, reptile and small game populations at night. Owls feed on a variety of animal species from insects, small mammals and reptiles, to the occasional fish. Typically solitary feeders, owls may occasionally gather in winter roosts or at an abundant food source Habitat Owls are found across all of North Carolina, with the exception of some marine habitats. Owls are largely forest birds with most requiring hollow trees or dark, dense vegetation to seek refuge during the day. Since much of their diet is typically rats and mice, prime feeding habitat occurs along fields and transitions where rodents and insects abound.
