Vacationland Woodies in Maine, a display of woodie wagons and convertibles from Maine's coastal and camping heritage.

Though the exhibit Woodies in Maine closed in the fall of 2001 several of the vehicles exhibited remain in our collection. To view information on our current exhibits and our complete collection, click to go to our Home Page
W oodie (woody), the name evokes images of beaches, weekend getaways, and even surfing. Dating back in design to the 1800s, the Woodie automobile was a carryover from the days of wooden wagons. The earliest woodie body can be seen on the 1900 Bronson Wagon, and closely mirrored on the 1925 Model T, positioned side by side on display for comparative purposes. The early wooden autos emerged from an age where wood was the material of choice, used in all horse drawn carriages, and even in the framing and bodywork of early automobiles. As all-metal construction became more economical, wooden construction became an object of prestige. Hand craftsmanship became an exception, where it had once been the rule, and the Woodie as we know it was born.
A panoramic view showing part of the new exhibit
Wooden construction of automobiles predates the Woodie era, as wooden bodies were around long before the Woodies we know today. Many, if not most, early automobile manufactures relied upon wooden body and frame construction, such as that performed by coachmakers. The 1885 Benz, 1903 Mercedes Simplex, 1904 Stanley Runabout, 1920 Maxwell Town Car, and a wide variety of other early examples of automobiles relied upon wooden construction to some degree, but are not considered Woodies.

Preserving Childhood with a Sense of Wonder Using picture books to introduce children to the marvels of nature by Daniel Kriesberg More wonder means more joy. Children are enlightened when they are introduced to the miracle of an acorn growing, examine a bee covered in pollen, or watch a cloud as it changes from one shape to another. There is so much to appreciate if we only stop and look. One place to start is with the natural world. Even in a city, all it takes is an open mind to find amazing plants, animals, and other miracles of nature. A simple and effective way to spark and heighten a sense of wonder about nature involves using picture books. I view picture books as preserves of childhood. They're reminders to all of us that thinking like a four-year-old is not such a bad idea. Take the time to reclaim your sense of wonder and pass it on to the children in your life. These books can help:

Nothing has helped define and shape mankind's technological history more than the invention and subsequent development of the wheel. From the dawn of time, we have sought to increase productivity through the use of tools, and the wheel is one of the greatest examples of simple tools that make our lives easier and better every day.
The obvious centerpiece of the Museum's "Where There is a Wheel There's a Way" tour, this exhibit will show you a timeline of the development of mankind's greatest invention—

    Introduction
The following pages describe the nine owls of North Dakota and are designed to help you locate and identify these fascinating birds of prey. Four of the nine owls are fairly common nesting species, while the others either nest occasionally or are found during particular seasons. Three of our owls depend primarily on native grasslands and have shown population declines presumably in response to the loss of required food and habitat. Owls have extraordinary sight and hearing capability. Their eyes are large and used to hunt during the night. Ears of the owl are even more remarkable. They are openings in the side of the head surrounded by deep, soft feathers, which the owl can shape to direct sound into the ear. The bird's facial disc, generally outlined by some change in feather pattern or color on the face, is also believed to help direct sound into the ear canal. Owl feathers are very soft in comparison to other birds and aid the owl in approaching prey quietly. They can strike their victims in the air, on the ground or even in trees by using long, sharp talons.

The fourth graders of Estabrook School in Lexington, MA welcome you to our Owl Home Pages. All of the fourth grade classes have done extensive research about owls or other birds of prey. The research included reading both fiction and non-fiction books, visiting World Wide Web sites, visiting local Audobon Society museums, interviewing wildlife rehabilitators, dissecting owl pellets, listening for owls on a night walk, and much more. The students then assembled their research and creative writing into a book. For their home pages they have chosen their favorite graph, chart, map, or picture along with some accompanying text. The work was completed under the direction of their classroom teachers Renee Sack and Nancy Alloway, classroom tutor Ninfa Ortalono and student teacher Erin Whyte. Thanks to Lexington High School Computer Club members Nick Ingolia and Elaine Srotm and parent Mr. Denison for putting this information on the WWW. Welcome Owl Fans,
You are cordially invited to share in the adventures of a pair of Northern Barred Owls ( Strix varia varia ) as they raise their family in a nest box in Eastern Massachusetts. Rest assured that all of the pictures and sounds that you will experience are being obtained through "owl friendly" methods. The outside photos are being taken with a supertelephoto lens at a range of 110 feet, while the internal shots are products of miniature low-light video cameras inside the owl's nest box. There are also highly sensitive microphones inside the nest box to record sounds never before heard by human ears. The first seven links below lead to the story of the barred owl family's first six seasons in the nest box, while the "Whatever" link provides nest building instructions plus additional features. Entering the first link will lead you through the entire site. For sharpest images, your display adapter should be set for 24-bit (True Color). by owlbox@owlcam.com
