Inquiry Education Information for the Classroom
Connect Magazine, Vol. 13. Issue 4, March/April 2000
Connect Magazine
is a journal supporting inquiry-based teaching and learning. Featured in this issue of Connect are six case studies of science inquiry in the elementary classroom written by teachers participating in the Institute for Inquiry Teacher Learning Group. Each article explores some critical aspect of inquiry. Connect Magazine is published by Synergy Learning International, Inc. Balch, Carolyn (Schmidt) "What I Learned in School." Connect, vol. 9 no. 5, pp. 1-3, May-June 1996. Abstract: This article chronicles what I learned during a field-testing about how kids learn and what they think about fundamental concepts important to flight (gravity, air pressure, weightlessness, etc.). It's more broadly constructivist (on getting inside kids' heads) and less focused on inquiry per se.)

Professor Sollohub's Research Interests Below are the research interests of Professor Sollohub and a number of thesis / project ideas:
  • The Role of computer technology in the classroom
Whether one talks about K-12 or college education, computer technology, especially Internet-based technology, is moving into the classroom. The real issue is no longer "Should such technology be in the classroom?" but "How can this technology be used wisely in support of the best forms of education?" For awhile now I have been asking this question and have written an on-line text book to teach C++ . Areas that I would like to explore further and which would make good theses or projects include:
  • In the area of university level Computer Science:
  • Multimedia products to explain and/or demo key ideas in C++ or some other area. The work here can be practical (building specific products or building frameworks from which specific products can be built), theoretical (why do some multimedia approaches work or not work; how can they be improved?), or a mixture of the two (a product built on a strong theoretical framework).
  • Use of streaming video and audio to deliver course content. What kind of course content in what formats would be beneficial transmitted over the net? What are the best ways to create such content? How should it be integrated into the classroom?

Using Digital Cameras In the Classroom
    Why Use a Digital Camera?
Is There Anything I Should Be Concerned About? Where Do I Start? Lesson Ideas ... Online References and Links Digital cameras are becoming more and more popular, especially for classroom use. They have many advantages: pictures are immediately available, pictures are saved in graphic format, and they are easily transferred from the camera to the computer. The purpose of this web page is to provide some ideas on how to use the digital camera in the classroom. The ideas have been collected from various educators. If we have used your idea and not given you credit, please let us know. Thanks to all who have contributed! Remember, it's not really about taking pictures, but using the camera as a tool to help you explore and understand other subjects! One important note: Check with your school's policy before posting ANY pictures of students on the internet.
Why Use a Digital Camera? Students love taking pictures as much as they love being in them. They benefit from using digital cameras because they learn firsthand the ease and immediacy of using digicams. Most of my students aren’t aware of the different types of graphics, but they can understand how it’s much more convenient to save pictures onto a disk which can be popped into a disk drive and transferred to a computer right away, as opposed to taking pictures with a regular camera, sending film to be developed, getting the pictures back, and then discovering that half of the pictures they took weren’t usable. They also realize that they’re saved the trouble of scanning, saving, and doing a lot of editing of photos, since this is all done on the camera itself. They also learn that pictures can be easily viewed on a screen or Smart Board, or emailed as attachments.

    95. Using Technology To Teach Medieval Texts

    http://www.unc.edu/student/orgs/cams/techtoteach/online.htm
    On-line Discussion Groups
Chat Room Discussion Forum Listserv E-mail Introduction The advantage of on-line discussion groups is that they offer a format through which students can interact with a subject, with their fellow students, and with their teachers outside of the classroom. One possibility they provide, of course, is distance learning. Using on-line discussion groups, you can hold class even when you cannot meet with your students in a regular classroom setting. More often, however, instructors use such groups as supplements to regularly held class meetings. On-line discussions allow students to continue discussions that you might not have time to address in class, and, in doing so, they also allow students to interact with members of the class in a way that is not constrained by the fifty-minute class period. The biggest pitfall that some of these tools create is the time committment required of the instructor. If you're expanding discussion outside of class, expect the volume of discussion to increase. If you assign to students to write pages upon pages of discussion forum replies, they'll expect you at least to read, if not respond, to them all. Adjust your expectations and your lesson plans accordingly, though, and you can have great successes with any of these tools. Chat Room Chat rooms allow people separated by geographical location to converse with one another electronically in something approximating real time. In other words, it's a format similar to e-mail, except that all users open the same program, view the same screen, and interact in a way that is almost the speed of a real conversation, depending on speed of the users' typing and Internet connection.
