University of Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno
When not teaching paleontology and evolution at the University of Chicago, Sereno is likely to be found, with his students, searching through museum collections or combing deserts to find fossil evidence important for understanding large-scale evolution during the dinosaur era. He fuses his mission of scientific research with his educational mission, engaging his students directly in the process of discovery. Herrerasaurus , previously known only from bones of the hind limb. The new fossils allowed Sereno and several sculptors to reconstruct the skeleton and create a flesh model of this 12-foot-long dinosaur, now on display at the Field Museum in Chicago. Returning to the Andes in 1991, Sereno and his team discovered a small skeleton belonging to a new species they named Eoraptor ("dawn raptor"). A primitive cousin of Herrerasaurus, Eoraptor Expeditions to Niger in 1993 and, most recently, to Morocco in 1995, led to new discoveries, including the first skulls and skeletons of dinosaurs from the Cretaceous period in Africa. From 130- million-year-old rocks in Niger came a new 27-foot-long predator Afrovenator ("African hunter") and bones of a huge, long-necked herbivore, as yet unnamed.

MESONYCHIDS
One of the most amazing stories in evolutionary biology is the origin of whales from land mammals. Archaic fossil whales first appeared in the Middle Eocene (approximately 50 million years ago) with a fully whalelike body, including a horizontal tail fluke, forelimbs modified into flippers, and no hind limbs. However, their distinctive triangular teeth provide a clue as to their origins: a group of hoofed mammals known as the mesonychids. Mesonychids were the first group of mammals to become specialized meat-eaters, appearing in the middle Paleocene (approximately 62 million years ago), before more specialized carnivorous mammals (the creodonts and eventually the true carnivores) occupied that niche. Most mesonychids were the size and shape of large wolves or bears, although some were as small as foxes. Members of this group had a heavy robust skull armed with sharp canine teeth and huge round-cusped molar teeth, suitable not only for eating meat but also for crushing bone. The body was also very wolflike, with a long tail and limbs. Like many modern carnivores, mesonychids walked on the tips of their long toes, rather than flat-footed. Despite all these carnivorous adaptations, however, mesonychids were derived from hoofed mammals. The proof is in their toes, which had hooves rather than claws.

The Dinosaur Heresies
Kensington Publishing Corp. (1996) Paperback - 481 pages
This is a provocative book dealing with dinosaurs and how interpretations about their biology are made. It does a good job placing dinosaurs in an ecological context with their reptilian and mammalian contemporaries. The author is a professional paleontologist who has his own sometimes controversial ideas about dinosaur behavior, evolution, and extinction.

Emily A. Buchholtz Professor of Biological Sciences SC 560, SC 333 ebuchholtz@wellesley.edu Teaching interests and activities I teach courses in organismal biology at several levels of the curriculum. These include introductory Organismal Biology (BISC 111), Comparative Vertebrate Physiology / Anatomy (BISC 203), Evolution (BISC 202) and an evolution seminar (BISC 305) entitled A Brief History of Life. I have also taught in multidisciplinary programs (Cluster in 1991-1992, INCIPIT in 1995-1996 and 1996-1997) and in the Geology Department. Research interests and activities My research interests are in vertebrate morphology, paleontology, and evolution. I am particularly interested in the evolution of the vertebral column, and in the way in which the serially homologous vertebrae have been subject to meristic, homeotic, and homologous changes. Such evolutionary changes are particularly dramatic when the axial skeleton is reorganized in taxa that are undergoing major environmental shifts. I have concentrated on three vertebrate lineages undergoing secondary invasion of marine environments: ichthyosaurs, whales, and seacows. I document variations in column morphology to predict mode of locomotion and to trace the evolutionary history of the marine invasion. The image on the right shows anterior caudal vertebrae of a juvenile Early Pliocene sea cow

Many people think paleontology is the study of fossils. In fact, paleontology is much more . Paleontology incorporates many different kinds of data from different fields. We provide three different areas in which to start your exploration of paleontology:
  • Phylogeny
  • Geologic Time
  • Evolutionary Thought These exhibits are extensive, complex and packed with information. To aid you in your virtual investigations, we have developed a navigation guide to explain the organizational structures and navigation tools that can help you make the most of the exhibits. You may also wish to look through our list of Special Exhibits for in-depth and interesting pages of note.
