Rainbow Serpent Painted Ceramic 12th century ~ Panama This image was developed from a beautifully painted bowl. The original colors would have been white and terra cotta red. The Rainbow Serpent was an important god in early Mezo-American pantheons, outlasting several civilizations. Panamanian art has a vivid graphic quality which truly stands out from the surrounding cultures and nations of Central America. From the still strong textile tradition of hand sewn molas to the pottery that has been excavated from ancient towns, civilizations, and graves, the art reflects a fabulous control of "positive and negative" space. Abstracted heritage/images of the natural world and their "background" are worked in contrasting colors so that a conventional distinction between background and foreground is broken down. Our Proud Heritage
Our History: T
he Caribbean was first discovered and explored by Christopher Columbus. It was named after the CARIB, a warlike tribe of cannibalistic Indians that inhabited some of the Lesser Antilles at the time of the European conquest. T he West Indies, which form the nucleus of the Caribbean region, consist of two main groups: the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico) to the north and the Lesser Antilles, which again are subdivided into the Windward and Leeward islands, to the east.
T he major channels separating the islands are Windward Passage, between Cuba and Hispaniola; Mona Passage, between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico; and Anegada Passage, between the British and U.S. Virgin Islands. T he Caribbean Sea is a partially enclosed body of water in the Western Hemisphere, a western extension of the Atlantic Ocean. It is bordered by South America (Venezuela, Colombia) on the south, Central America (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico) on the west, and the islands of the West Indies on the north and east. The Yucatan Channel between Cuba and Yucatan connects the Caribbean Sea with the Gulf of Mexico, numerous passages between the islands join it to the Atlantic, and the Panama Canal furnishes access to the Pacific Ocean.

Panama While Panama is known mostly for its famous canal, the country's natural attractions offer an irresistible lure to far-sighted travelers. Panama offers some of the finest birding, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing in the Americas. It is a proud nation that offers astounding wildlife adventures, that respects its seven indigenous peoples and that celebrates its Spanish heritage with frequent and colorful festivals. There's an inescapable feeling that you're in on a secret the rest of the traveling world has yet to discover. The country's indigenous name means 'abundance of fish', rafters can ride 20 sets of rapids in a single day, wildlife abounds in the scarcely-visited national parks, and a person can snorkel in the Caribbean Sea and swim in the Pacific Ocean...on the same day! It's no wonder the locals boast that Panama has much more to offer than nearby, traveler-soaked Costa Rica.

April 10, 2003 2:29 PM Panama is located on the narrowest and lowest part of Central America. This S-shaped part of the isthmus is slightly smaller than South Carolina, approximately 77,082 square kilometers. Panama has two coastlines, the Caribbean Sea to the north and Pacific Ocean to the south, and borders Colombia to the east and Costa Rica to the west. The country is divided into nine provinces, plus the Comarca de San Blas with over 350 islands and the Comarca Ngabe-Bugle.
The dominant features of Panama's topography are the mountains and hills that form the continental divide. The highest point on the divide, the Volc…n Barô, rises to almost 3,500 meters. The Ro Chagres is one of the longest and most vital of the rivers that flow into the Atlantic. Part of this river was dammed to create Gatun Lake, which forms a major part of the Panama Canal transit route between the locks near each end of the canal. Both Gatun Lake and Madden Lake (also filled with water from the Ro Chagres) provide hydroelectricity for the area of the former Canal Zone.
Panama's tropical environment supports an abundance of plants. Although nearly 40 percent of Panama is still wooded, poor management of natural resources has caused deforestation, erosion, pollution, loss of biological diversity, and the degradation of coastal and marine systems. As a result, water pollution from agricultural runoff threatens fishery resources; land degradation forces families off their land; and soil erosion threatens siltation of the Panama Canal.
