Erlang
  • Concurrency - Erlang has a process-based model of concurrency with asynchronous message passing. The processes are light-weight, i.e require little memory; creating and deleting processes and message passing require little computational effort.
  • Hardware/OS independent - Erlang programs are compiled to byte code executed by the Erlang virtual machine. This makes a program portable on object-code level and possible to distribute over a network of heterogenous computers.
  • Real-time - Erlang is intended for programming soft real-time systems where response times in the order of milliseconds are required.
  • Continuous operation - primitives for code replacement in run-time.
  • Robustness - mechanisms to detect run-time errors.
  • Memory management - Erlang is a symbolic programming language with a real-time garbage collector.
  • Distribution - no shared memory, all interaction between processes is by asynchronous message passing. The distribution is location transparent. The program does not have to consider whether the recipient of a message is a local process or located on a remote Erlang virtual machine.
  • Integration - Erlang can easily call or make use of programs written in other programming languages. These can be interfaced to the system in such way that they appear to the programmer as if they were written in Erlang.

Maisie Maisie is a C-based simulation language that can be used for sequential and parallel execution of discrete-event simulation models. It can also be used as a parallel programming language. An object (also referred to as a PP for physical process) or set of objects in the physical system is represented by a logical process or LP. Interactions among PPs (events) are modeled by timestamped message exchanges among the corresponding LPs. One of the important distinguishing features of Maisie is its ability to execute a discrete-event simulation model using several different asynchronous parallel simulation protocols on a variety of parallel architectures. Maisie is designed to cleanly separate the description of a simulation model from the underlying simulation protocol, sequential or parallel, used to execute it.     Wolfram Research is introducing parallel computing support for Mathematica. Now entering its beta test phase, the upcoming Parallel Computing Toolkit will add parallel programming over a network of heterogeneous machines to the long list of programming paradigms supported in Mathematica.     The High Performance Fortran tools facilitate the writing of parallel programs for use in the new generation of parallel computers.
    A result from Esprit, the European Union's IT research and development programme. The widespread adoption of parallel computing is currently restricted by the time consuming and error prone nature of existing programming languages present major barriers to this. High Performance Fortran (HPF) is making the writing of parallel programmes very much easier than was possible previously and is helping bring distributed memory systems into the general scientific community. Recognising the importance of HPF in the new market for parallel machines, N.A. Software and its partners set about the development of new compilation techniques demanded by HPF and Fortran90, on which it is based. The HPF Mapper forms the spearhead of a range of Fortran90 tools now available. It acts as a source-to-source translator, producing highly efficient Fortran90 code, with message passing calls, from a subset HPF program.     • Architecture and performance
    • Theory and complexity analysis of parallel algorithms
    • Programming languages and systems for writing parallel and distributed programs
    • Scheduling of parallel and distributed tasks
    Cutting across these broad topical areas are the various "programming paradigms", e.g., data parallel, control parallel, and distributed programming. After developing these fundamental concepts, the authors illustrate them in a wide variety of algorithms and programming languages. Of particular interest is the final chapter which shows how Java can be used to write distributed and parallel programs. This approach gives the reader a broad, yet insightful, view of the field. Many books on parallel computing have been published during the last 10 years or so. Most are already outdated since the themes and technologies in this area are changing very rapidly. Particularly, the notion that parallel and distributed computing are two separate fields is now beginning to fade away; technological advances have been bridging the gap.

    Researchers always need higher processing speed and more memory in order to investigate increasingly complex problems. Distributed parallel computing can be very cost effective when commodity workstations and PCs are used as the computing platforms. Early in 1992, ATS started building an IBM AIX/Cluster that evolved into the IBM SP/ Cluster complex with the SP, IBM's 9076 Scalable POWERParallel System at its core . In 1998, ATS started building clusters of PC's running Windows NT and LINUX. By 2002 ATS was running a production Beowulf (Linux) cluster and had decommissioned the SP. Now, many UCLA departments are running local Beowulf clusters of their own and ATS has been assisting departments and professors in building clusters.. The development of new parallel applications and the parallelization of existing sequential or serial applications to fully exploit the power of a distributed system, such as a cluster, is a complex task
