P573 and Mathematics M471. A working knowledge of C/C++. Enough UNIX to write, manage, and run multifile programs, and to time algorithms and codes.
Textbooks: Much of the course material will be scattered around the Web and in class. There are some outstanding books on the area of parallel computing, generally concentrating on one aspect or another. If you want to buy one, my recommendation is to wait until after the course is over, when you know what material is useful. Do not send books below to departmental printers! It is just a major waste of paper to do so, and our use of them will be negligible.
MPI: The Complete Reference by Marc Snir, Steve Otto, Steven Huss-Lederman, David Walker, and Jack Dongarra is the most useful one for looking up MPI functions and their calling sequences. This covers MPI-1; the MPI-2 standard is already out but no books that I know of are yet available.

    Intermediate Language Definition and Sequential Implementation

    • There was continued work on developing the YAP system. The native code compiler was improved to support indexing. It was developed a generic mechanism for implementing extensions to the emulator. This mechanism provides a basis for extensions such as arrays and co-routining. Performance for X86 machines was substantially improved. Last, an high-level implementation scheme for tabulation was implemented.

    • Study of semantic features of several type systems for declarative languages: an application of a characterization of type systems based on type constraints to the Curry type system, the Damas-Milner system and the Coppo-Dezani type system, and the comparison of two type languages for logic programming: regular types and regular deterministic types were made.

    Parallel computing techniques of Linear Programming and symmetric matrix tridaigonalization

    A parallel processor systern which is organized with several minicomputers is expected to be practical use in the near future. The parallel compuing of Linear Programming Problems and tridiagonalization of the symmetric matrices are considered to be typical applications of it. So, we analized the parallel computing methods of LP algorithm(the revised simplex method together with the product form of the inverse of current basis)and Dr. Murata's tridiagonalization algorithm of the symmetric banded matrices.

    Abstract: In this paper, six portable parallel programming environments are compared. For each environment, communication bandwidths are reported for simple 2 node and 4 node benchmarks. Reproducibility was a top priority, so these tests were run on an isolated ethernet network of identical SPARCstation 1 workstations. Earlier reports of this work omitted opinions reached during the benchmarking about the effectiveness of these environments. These opinions are included in this paper since they are based... (Update)

    Promoting portable, efficient programming Scientists devote months-even years-to refining their programming codes for optimal performance on a particular architecture. Understandably then, they may be reluctant to use a new architecture-even one that promises greater capabilities-if, in order to use it, they have to take time away from their research to rewrite codes. Unless researchers do migrate to newer architectures, though, they cannot realize the sweeping increases in performance necessary for improving the resolution or scale of massive simulations, enabling the analysis of ever larger databases, or increasing the quality of images streaming from instruments. The Enabling Technologies Parallel Computing Team is providing researchers with an easy way to tap the scalable performance of parallel architectures without completely rewriting their applications. They are developing a toolkit filled with portable programming languages, libraries, and other advanced tools that make it easier for researchers to develop, move, and fine-tune applications. Supporting both conventional as well as emerging distributed shared-memory (DSM) and commodity cluster systems, the toolkit will enable researchers to readily use the architecture best suited for a given job.

  • Introduction
    Nowadays, the major way of increasing computers' productivity is parallelism. Because almost the only way of increasing computer speed (on certain elemental base) is making its components work simultaneously. It is clear, that computer with two central processor units will work faster than the single-processor one. And, in the ideal case, N-processor system is N times faster, than a single processor one. Usually, this speedup is unreachable, but in some cases parallel systems give even more effect - when a task allows very effective parallel algorithm to be applied. Some tasks of mathematical physics, that require grid calculations, can be solved in parallel very efficiently. At the time of extremely rapid information technologies development the necessity in fast large-scale computations is more than actual. Ordinary, single-processor computers do not give people enough computational power, that is why computers, used in serious, large-scale computations are all parallel. Thus, it is necessary to write programs for such computers (or computational systems, it is unclear where to make a bound). Parallel software is new and a very difficult branch of computer science, writing parallel programs still seems to be an art, rather than engineering. In this article the main ideas and methods of parallel programming for every type of parallel computational systems will be observed.
