http://www.gg.ca/media/speeches/archive-2002/20020911_e.asp

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson
Taped at La Citadelle, Wednesday, September 11, 2002 As Governor General it is a pleasure to honour Canadian performing artists who each year reach out from the screen, the stage, to captivate us through their work. We always remember performing artists because we feel that we are in direct contact with them. We feel that we know who they are even when they are dancing a role or playing well-known music. Our first Canadian Governor General, Vincent Massey, helped to anchor the arts in our modern way of life in Canada. Without him, we would never have had the incredible explosion of talented artists and performers that we have seen over the past five decades, of which our honourees are a part. This year, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Canadian Governors General, we recognize the immense and lasting contribution of this remarkable man. Joy Coghill has been the primary motivating force behind many young theatre companies, helping them mature through her talents as director, playwright and teacher. Our first international rock superstars, The Guess Who, exploded on the music scene three decades ago, showing the world that Canada can rock.
