    Middle School Music
    General Music Curriculum
The goal of the General Music Program is to increase the sensitivity of students to be power of music as an art, and to help them understand and appreciate it in order to respond to it personally. General Music is not taught as an isolated subject, but as an integral part of each students' education. Links are made with language, movement, drama, history, the visual arts, and the environment. The sixth and seventh grade programs develop musicianship through singing, movement, music theory, music history, playing classroom instruments, and creative composition. Following closely the Middle School History curriculum, sixth grade students study music of ancient civilizations and the Middle Ages, and seventh grade students study the music of Africa, the Middle East, the Holocaust, and Latin America. Seventh grade students also study instrument families with an emphasis on the orchestra's history from the Baroque Period to the present time. In the eighth grade, students study musical style and music theory, play instruments, sing, and compose music. An understanding of musical style is developed through a study of the elements of music: rhythm, pitch, timbre, form, and musical expression.
