It studies the foundations of all forms of knowledge and human activity and the interconnections among them. Its studies include the nature of existence, knowledge, and value; human reasoning and its limits; art, science, literature, and the human condition; and justice and the nature of the good. It unifies these diverse topics by concentrating on the fundamental nature of human experience and cognition as well as the conceptual foundations of the sciences. A major in philosophy gives students access to the fruits of 2500 years of thought on matters of ultimate concern. It encourages and provides the means of thinking effectively about timeless questions through a study of important writings on these topics. A successful student of philosophy is equipped to engage in intellectual conversation on a range of topics of both classical and contemporary concern. The study of philosophy encourages breadth and depth of understanding and promotes the ability to think cogently and rigorously.

Abstract
Husserl made certain assumptions about the nature of the components of experienced phenomena derived from and similar to the assumptions of the psychologists of his time. I will present some of those assumptions, and argue, and support that argument with evidence, that they are incorrect. I claim that if that is true, then Husserlian methodology is flawed, to the extent that for certain investigations both the epoch? and the method of eidetic variation necessitate circularity which invalidates their utility. These arguments and some of their implications are presented in detail. Keywords: Husserl, phenomenology, gestalts, cognition, Gurwitsch, philosophy of mind Subjects: Psychology Cognitive Psychology

Phenomenology and its Discontents This course examines the structure and development of Husserlian phenomenology and critical responses from later continental philosophers. Phenomenology envisaged itself, like Descartes and 20th century movements such as logical empiricism, as making a radical break with the tradition of philosophy in order to place philosophy and the sciences on a secure foundation. The battle cry, “To the things themselves,” indicates a return to the immediate givenness of phenomena, which, for Husserl , was compromised by the schools of thought prominent at the turn of the century, especially positivism, which reduces mathematics and logic to psychology or consciousness to physical entities, and historicism, which interprets all truth as relative to the historical development of different worldviews. Due to their reductionistic tendencies, these theories rule out the possibility that consciousness, ideal objects, and cultural artifacts have features that cannot be traced back to empirical facts. Husserl sets out to counter this claim through a detailed analysis of intentionality. He argues that philosophy will only become a rigorous and objective science that can provide a foundation for the other sciences when it is grounded in an adequate understanding of the necessary features of consciousness that make sense perception possible.

  • Which reductive notions pupils tend to maintain concerning their religious origins and religions and personal philosophies in general? What are the key points which tend to give rise to discussion in this regard. Are such reductive options proposed by the teachers themselves or by the school culture emerging in a particular institution? What religio-statistical data can be employed to disempower inaccurate notions and distorted images? Which events or concrete situations give occassion for reference to the particular contribution of the phenomenology of religion , the philosophy of religion , the psychology of religion and the sociology of religion , in contrast to the lived experience of a particular faith conviction and/or its theological justification? What kind of documentation can assist pupils in establishing a personal confrontation between the meaning of faith and the insights of faith of the believer on the one hand and the discoveries resulting from the study of religion on the other? Do pupils have the capacity to discern and understand the various conceptions of religion spread throughout the media and public opinion?

Book Series: ANALECTA HUSSERLIANA The Yearbook of Phenomenological Research Volume L
In her introduction to this collection, Tymieniecka presents her phenomenology of life - the leitmotif of the three-volume anniversary publication of Analecta Husserliana - as something that stands out from preceding historical attempts to investigate life in an `integral' or `scientific' way.
After an incubation lasting throughout the 2000 years of Occidental philosophy, this scientific phenomenology/philosophy of life at last uncovers the entire area of the `inner workings of Nature', exposing the way in which the `sufficient reason' and the `ground' of beingness as such crystallise out of the `onto-poietic' process. This onto-poietic process, continuing as it does in the human creative condition, also reveals the authentic genius of the works of the human spirit.

The book is addressed to phenomenologists, particularly those who are interested in some or all of the areas mentioned. In his introduction Joseph J. MA in European Philosophy
The Department of Politics and Philosophy welcomes applications for a taught MA in European Philosophy and Phenomenology, as well as proposals for MPhil./PhD by research. The MA programme in European Philosophy and Phenomenology starts in September on a one year full time, or two years part time basis. While it forms an intensive and self-contained foundation in European Philosophy, it will also be a grounding for students who may intend to go on to further postgraduate studies. The course has a tripartite structure. Students will follow an Induction to Research Methods; a module concerned with the value of method and style in philosophical thinking; and two courses focusing on central figures and fundamental problems in European philosophy. One course will examine the significance of art in Continental philosophy. To that end the course will consider the import of aesthetics in the writings of Kant and Hegel, through to Heidegger’s, Merleau-Ponty’s and Benjamin’s interrogation of the origin of the work of art. The other course, entitled Contesting the History of Philosophy, will explore the disruption of the philosophical tradition in the writings of Derrida, Irigaray and other contemporary figures through the notions of deconstruction and sexual difference.

Nausea
Perhaps the best known and most philosophical of Sartre's novels. A classic piece of existentialist literature. Sartre's existentialist magnum opus . The principal theoretical text of his early period, it deals with the relationship between phenomenology and ontology and lays the foundations for the development of an existential psychoanalysis. Notebooks for an Ethics Including 'No Exit', perhaps Sartre's best known play, 'The Respectful Prostitute', 'The Flies' and 'Dirty Hands'.

Serge Sharoff
cognitive science as philosophy
As classic philosophy fades away, said Heidegger, cybernetics becomes a philosophy for the twentieth century. However, this thesis can be reversed; that is, philosophical systems can be interpreted from the viewpoint of computer science. Different schools of cognitive science, then, represent the interpretations or realizations of corresponding schools of philosophy. The history of artificial intelligence began with efforts to create thinking machines designed to cover the widest possible domain of human intellectual activity, and the declared objective of such program development was to exceed usual human reasoning, at least in certain fields. Programming served as a basis for these investigations. In practical terms, the relative failure of these early attemptsthe discrepancy between their announced intentions and their real successeshas led to the creation of effective programs operating successfully in carefully constrained problem domains. Conceptually, the goal now of theoretical research in AI is to investigate the human mind, an end to which both psychological research and pure programming tricks have been put. But many AI problems also have a direct relationship to old philosophical problems: mental category determination, hermeneutic circle problems, the balance between empirical and a priori knowledge, the interrelations between abstract and specific knowledge, and so on. If we look at theoretical investigations in AI, we discover that they are always based on some philosophical background; this framework helps in large part to determine the structure of AI models as they are elaborated.
