As such, it will focus on discussion and on questions asked in class over the terminology and intentions of the reading. Normally, we will not address material about which there is not a question from members of the seminar—something they want to know. The assigned reading is the “lecture.”

    Phenomenology and Hermeneutics
Phenomenology is both a way of interpretation and inquiry and also a tradition to be studied in its historical context. It thus offers a point of intersection for diverse faculty interests at Oregon. Our research concerns those theorists most commonly situated within the tradition of phenomenology and hermeneutics: Husserl, Scheler, Jaspers, Heidegger, Marcel, Buber, Levinas, Merleau-Ponty, Derrida, Gadamer and Ricoeur. But hermeneutics and phenomenology is also understood through theorists who form a broader horizon, such as Beauvoir and other feminists, Mark Johnson, and Fanon. Moreover, important figures and traditions in the history of philosophysuch as Plato, Aristotle, or the major figures of German Idealism and American Pragmatismare studied and interpreted with reference to their contributions to phenomenology. Eastern Philosophy
Many of the key ideas in Asian philosophy, as in western philosophy, can be traced to the so-called Axial period from 800 to 200 BC., where what we now refer to as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Carvaka, Confucianism, Mohism, Taoism and Legalism came to be developed. The department is committed to the study of the most important philosophical writings associated with these traditions, including writings from the Axial and later periods. The study of Asian philosophical writings can provide a fresh and distinctive approach to many of the traditional problems of western philosophy. The gap between theory and practice which seems almost constitutive of much of western philosophy is absent in Asian philosophy, where the focus is on liberation from attachment to self in the context not of individualism but communitarianism. The disputes and controversies within Asian philosophy have an intrinsic interest, and by engaging in these controversies students can deepen their understanding not only of the issues at stake in these controversies but of what is at issue in the traditional problems of western philosophy.
