Overview
Culture the Philippines
The Philippines blend the cultures that struggled to dominate her from the east - China, and the west - Spain and Arabia. Long before the Spanish colonized the Philippines, the Chinese were here negotiating with the Muslims for trading rights. Filipinos have a few charming behaviors a first time visitor may not understand. One is pointing. Filipinos point with their lips. They pucker their lips and point with them. Getting someone's attention is not done with the voice, it is done using the hissing sound - "Psssssst." If you hear a long "psssssssssssssst," that means the person who is trying to get your attention is probably some distance away from you. Like most Asian cultures you will see women walking hand in hand or with their arms around each other, and men touching each other in public. This has nothing to do with their sexual orientation and everything to do with the "loving family" nature of these warm tropical people.

Banaue Rice Terraces Palawan Coron Bay Mayon Volcano Philippine Jeepney Batangas Taal Volcano Pahiyas Festival THE PHILIPPINES Pearl of the Orient Background The Philippines were ceded by Spain to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. They attained their independence in 1946 after being occupied by the Japanese in World War II. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986 when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile. In 1992, the US closed down its last military bases on the islands. The Philippines has had two electoral presidential transitions since Marcos' removal by "people power." In January 2001, the Supreme Court declared Joseph ESTRADA unable to rule in view of mass resignations from his government and administered the oath of office to Vice President Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO as his constitutional successor. The government continues to struggle with ongoing Muslim insurgencies in the south. Provinces and Cities Economy In 1998 the Philippine economy - a mixture of agriculture, light industry, and supporting services - deteriorated as a result of spillover from the Asian financial crisis and poor weather conditions. Growth fell to about -0.5% in 1998 from 5% in 1997, but recovered to about 3% in 1999 and 3.6% in 2000. The government has promised to continue its economic reforms to help the Philippines match the pace of development in the newly industrialized countries of East Asia. The strategy includes improving infrastructure, overhauling the tax system to bolster government revenues, moving toward further deregulation and privatization of the economy, and increasing trade integration with the region.

HISTORY

The Filipino is basically of Malay stock with a sprinkling of Chinese, American, Spanish and Arab blood. The Philippines has a population of 76.5 million, and it is hard to distinguish accurately the lines between stocks. From a long history of Western colonial rule, interspersed with the visits of merchants and traders, evolved a people of a unique blend of east and west, both in appearance and culture. The Filipino character is actually a little bit of all the cultures put together. The bayanihan or spirit of kinship and camaraderie that Filipinos are famous for is said to be taken from Malay forefathers. The close family relations are said to have been inherited from the Chinese. The piousness comes, from the Spaniards who introduced Christianity in the 16th century. Hospitality is a common denominator in the Filipino character and this is what distinguishes the Filipino. Filipinos are probably one of the few, if not the only, English-proficient Oriental people today. Pilipino is the official national language, with English considered as the country's unofficial one. The Filipinos are divided geo-graphically and culturally into regions, and each regional group is recognizable by distinct traits and dialects-the sturdy and frugal Ilocanos of the north, the industrious Tagalog's of the central plains, the carefree Visayans from the central islands and the colorful tribes-men and religious Moslems of Mindanao. Tribal communities can be found scattered across the archipelago. All in all the Philippines has 111 dialects spoken, owing to the subdivisions of these basic regional and regional groups.

72. The Philippines: Then & Now - Filipino History, Culture & Tradition
It is said that some elements of the Indian culture reached the Philippinesthrough the Hinduized Malays who settled in the country permanently. IV.
http://www.philnewscentral.com/thennow.html
The Philippines: Then and Now (Excerpted from The Filipino Americans (From 1763 to the Present) Their History, Culture, and Traditions by Veltisezar Bautista. The Philippines is located in the southeastern portion of Asia. Her neighbor on the north is the Republic of China (Taiwan or Formosa), while on the west is Communist Vietnam. Further west is Thailand. Immediately to the south of the Philippines is Indonesia and to the southwest are Malaysia and Singapore. The Philippines is separated from her nearby Asian neighbors by several bodies of water. They are the Pacific Ocean on the east, the South China Sea on the north and west, and the Celebes Sea and the coastal waters of Borneo on the south. I. LAND AND ITS PEOPLE The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands and islets. The biggest islands are Luzon, with a land area of 40,530 square miles (105,000 square kilometers); Mindanao, 36,670 square miles (95,000 square kilometers); Palawan, 5,749.86 square miles (14, 896 square kilometers); Negros, 5,278.55 square miles (13,675 square kilometers); and Samar, 5,183.59 square miles (13,429 square kilometers). She has a rugged land mass and, similarly, she has an irregular coastline, which is twice as long as that of the continental U.S.A. This irregularity has resulted in numerous fine harbors and landlocked straights that can accommodate large ships. They can also be a refuge of ships in distress during stormy weather. The land surface is 115,800 square miles (300,000 square kilometers). Land forms include hills, plains, valleys, and mountains. Her mountain ranges, which are volcanic in origin, are drained by small river systems. There are seven major mountain ranges. The largest and longest is Sierra Madre, which faces the Pacific Ocean on the eastern coast of Luzon. The highest peak is Mt. Apo, a volcano in Davao del Sur Province. It has an elevation of 9,691.60 feet (2,954 meters).

http://www.coplex.com.au/coron/history.html
The Philippines acquired its name from Philip II, who was King of Spain during the Spanish colonisation of the islands in the 16th century. The ancestors of the Filipinos are Malays originating from the southeastern Asian mainland and from Indonesia. Filipino-Chinese account for a significant portion of the population. Click on the images above to view a larger picture. The majority of Filipinos are Roman Catholic. Followers of evangelical Christians, Philippines Independent Church, Muslims and Protestants including a sect called Iglesia ni Cristo are the other largest religious minorities. There are also a small number of Buddhists and animists. The country has many cultural affinities with the West as a result of the 333 years of Spanish colonisation and 48 years with the Americans. It is the fourth most populous country in which English is an official language. It also has one of the highest literacy rates in Asia.
