Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind
    Wilfrid Sellars
    Foreword Author Richard Rorty
Study Guide by Robert B. Brandom The most important work by one of America's greatest twentieth-century philosophers, Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind is both the epitome of Wilfrid Sellars' entire philosophical system and a key document in the history of philosophy. First published in essay form in 1956, it helped bring about a sea change in analytic philosophy. It broke the link, which had bound Russell and Ayer to Locke and Humethe doctrine of "knowledge by acquaintance." Sellars' attack on the Myth of the Given in Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind was a decisive move in turning analytic philosophy away from the foundationalist motives of the logical empiricists and raised doubts about the very idea of "epistemology."

Professor John R. Searle University of California at Berkeley
Any discussion of these matters has to begin with the French philosopher René Descartes, who divided the world into two parts, mind and body. Much of the philosophy of the mind since Descartes has been an effort to put the two parts of the world back together again.
One of the most controversial questions discussed by Professor Searle is whether computers can think. This question is not as clear as it appears on the surface and Professor Searle clarifies it in such a way as to give us the possibility of a clear cut answer. The issues raised by this course are the most central the mind can ask. It is a joy to have them explained and explored with so capable a guide.

Stoic Philosophy of Mind Stoicism was one of the most important and enduring philosophies to emerge from the Greek and Roman world. The Stoics are well known for their contributions to moral philosophy, and more recently they have also been recognized for their work in logic, grammar, philosophy of language, and epistemology. This article examines the Stoics' contributions to philosophy of mind. The Stoics constructed one of the most advanced and philosophically interesting theories of mind in the classical world. As in contemporary cognitive science, the Stoics rejected the idea that the mind is an incorporeal entity. Instead they argued that the mind (or soul) must be something corporeal and something that obeys the laws of physics. Moreover, they held that all mental states and acts were states of the corporeal soul. The soul (a concept broader than the modern concept of mind) was believed to be a hot, fiery breath [ pneuma ] that infused the physical body. As a highly sensitive substance, pneuma pervades the body establishing a mechanism able to detect sensory information and transmit the information to the central commanding portion of the soul in the chest. The information is then processed and experienced. The Stoics analyzed the activities of the mind not only on a physical level but also on a logical level. Cognitive experience was evaluated in terms of its propositional structure, for thought and language were closely connected in rational creatures. The Stoic doctrine of perceptual and cognitive presentation (

    http://www.philosopher.org.uk/mind.htm
    Philosophy of mind
It is often thought that the main defining characteristic of a person is that a person has consciousness, mind or soul. We are all aware of consciousness (our feelings, thoughts and sensations), however it is more difficult to say what consciousness is. Plato(c. 427-347 BC) thought that what we really are is our soul, and that this soul will survive after death, indeed death is seen as the release of the soul. Plato is thus asserting that soul and body are distinct substances, bodies die, but souls are immortal. Aristotle (384-322 BC) Thought that the soul and the body are essentially related. The soul is not a separate substance, but an arrangement of stuff, or material substance, of which the body is made. As Aristotle once said, "If an axe had a soul, its soul would be cutting" For Aristotle then individual immortality seems impossible. Modern philosophy has developed these 2 themes in a number of ways. Stimulated by Descartes , Leibniz suggested that mind and body only appear to interact: in reality there is no relation between the 2 substances, rather God has pre-established a harmony so that our minds and bodies do not fall out of sync. He uses the analogy of the 2 clocks to illustrate his point. God is seen the master craftsman who has created 2 clocks of such perfection that they always show the same time. Whilst this point of view does not rule out immortality, it does seem that free will can not exist as god has pre-established all possible activities.

Thus, it asks not only what mental phenomena are and what gives rise to them, but also what relationship they have to the larger physical body and the world around us. This is essentially a subspeciality of Metaphysics because it addresses the fundamental nature of a specific aspect of reality: the mind. For some, depending upon their other views on

FREE WILL, DETERMINISM AND MORAL RESPONSIBILITY THE WHOLE THING IN BRIEF by Ted Honderich the Determinism and Freedom Philosophy Website This sums up a lot of T.H.'s past words elsewhere in A Theory of Determinism: The Mind, Neuroscience and Life-Hopes and also the first edition of How Free Are You? It is against the idea that determinism is logically consistent with free will and moral responsibility, and also against the idea, as turns out to be possible to be, that these things are logically inconsistent. It gives a background to " Determinism: Compatibilism, Incompatibilism, and the Smart Aleck " and the more recent " Determinism as True, Compatibilism and Incompatibilism as Both False, and the Real Problem ". Truth to tell, though, it has been a little overtaken by further thoughts most of them in the second edition of How Free Are You?
This paper is a sketch of a deterministic philosophy of mind and then of its consequences for the fundamental part of our moral lives which has to do with moral responsibility. (1) In its first part, to be a little more precise, this somewhat unfashionable theory presents our human actions as effects of certain causal sequences. In these there occur the antecedents of the actions decisions and intentions and also the neural events which go with them all of which antecedent events are themselves effects of yet earlier parts of the causal sequence. Some of these yet earlier parts are environmental, and others are bodily events in the life of the individual.

    • Philosophy of Psychology by George Botterill and Peter Carruthers (photocopy)
    • Species of Mind by Colin Allen and Marc Bekoff, MIT Press, 1997.
    • Other readings as provided
    Course Description
We will begin with a new, as-yet-unpublished text on the philosophy of psychology by George Botterill and Peter Carruthers. After this overview of the subject, we will spend a few weeks concentrating more narrowly on the topic of teleological theories of meaning. We will then get an overview of the topic of animal cognition by working through the Allen and Bekoff book, and we will end with a period of increased concentration on the specific topic of concepts in animals.
    Course Objectives
By the end of this seminar every participant should have a strong reading knowledge of several current research issues in the philosophy of mind and psychology. The course is structured so that we will return at several times during the semester to the same topics, hopefully with a deeper understanding of the issues each time. Individual objectives will be determined on a case by case basis, but philosophy M.A. students should be aiming to write a final research paper that could serve as a writing sample for application to a Ph.D. program, or as a draft of a thesis proposal.

    Materialist Philosophy of Mind
A paper that analyzes the materialist philosophy of the mind using various philosophers’ point of views. Term Paper #: # of words: # of sources: Format (MLA/APA): MLA Written: Price: Hide: Author: Kirsten Davies
    Abstract
By examining the views of several philosophers, including Gilbert Ryle and Sigmund Freud, the paper analyzes materialist philosophy of the mind in the context of Cartesian dualism. The paper concludes that despite their minor differences on matter of details, the behaviorist, the functionalists, and theory of identity are all agreed on the more materialist claim that the mental supervenes on the physical and that their disagreements arise over exactly how such supervenience obtains.
    From The Paper
"Arguing against Ryle logical behaviorism which is inclined more towards private and subjective mental states in the form of radical behaviorism, there is an identity theory of mind, which says that mental events are physical-biological processes in the brain. Pain for example is nothing over and above a neural state in the central nervous system, presumably the excitation of certain neurons in the brain. The identity can also be put in terms of properties of event; the property of being a pain event is identical with the property of being a c-fiber stimulation event. The identity theory of mind is believed to be the most preferred and most plausible view in contemporary philosophy of mind. To put it simple the identity theory suggests that to have a mind is to have a brain".
