Once students have gained an appreciation and understanding of the need for Native Americans to communicate through the medium of gesture and sign language, students are to practice making these same gestures as shown in the diagrams offered on this Web-site. Once the students have gained an understanding in the differences between the signing of Native Americans and the sign language used by the deaf, they are to develop their own signs based on the concepts of Native American gesture communication. Goal: To have the students think about what life was like in an Indian tribe and how they communicated their stories, their needs, their hunting experiences, their confrontations with other tribes, and with the white man. Objectives: 1.Students will think of telling a story using only sign language as their medium of communication.
