Fact Sheet #6
Gardening with Native Plants:
General Introduction
Go for Green - The Active Living and Environment Program, encourages outdoor physical activity that protects, enhances or restores the environment. When we Go for Green, we improve our own health, through active living and the health of the planet, by being good environmental citizens. Gardening is active living. Is it the second most popular physical activity in Canada, it offers the opportunity for lifelong participation, and can be a positive contributor to the natural environment. One of the most positive gardening trends over the last few yearsalong with the growing commitment of gardeners to organic practiceshas been the increased interest in native plant gardening. People across Canada are looking to the natural landscapes of woodlands, meadows, prairies and wetlands for inspiration in their gardens, recreating back and front yard habitats that are based on models found in nature. The environmental reasons for gardening with native plants are positive and compelling. Native plant gardens:

    http://syllabus.syr.edu/ESF/pdmanion/forpath/plants.htm
    Parasitic Flowering Plants
General Introduction : Parasitic flowering plant are usually Dicotyledons. Some are totally dependent upon the host for preformed photosynthates ( holoparasitic ). Others maintain some minimal photosynthetic function in their own leaves and are only partially dependent upon the host for nutrients ( hemiparasites Subterranean parasitic plants spend the majority of their life cycle below ground while endophytes are present only within host tissue and may be associated with infections of host meristems. Dodders - examples of a non-species specific parasitic plants
    Pathogen Cuscuta spp., cosmopolitan distribution
Hosts : While many parasitic flowering plants are species specific, some are not host specific. Dodders ( Cuscuta spp.) are cosmopolitan in distribution and their growth can be associated with significant economic losses in the host. However, dodders are not usually a problem in forests. Losses have occurred in tree nurseries, especially on black locusts, green ash and poplar species.
Historical Background : Because dodder seeds are similar in size to those of many common weeds, its seeds were introduced with commercial seed into many locations where it was not native. Initially, the radicle penetrates the ground to support the plant but later the haustoria penetrate the host stem and the ground contact disintegrates. The reduced chlorophyll content in reduced leaves are not sufficient to provide photosynthates to the dodder plant and it must utilize photosynthate absorbed from the host plant through the haustoria. Up to one half mile of coiled dodder shoots may develop over the growing season. Galls and "witch's brooms" often develop on infected hosts.
